Lyrics: The Raven Child
[Hansi Kürsch:]
Wild groves, sacred grounds fade to vastness
Mother Moon, cast your spell on these fields
Let the boughs paint ghostly shades on the trail
To a different world
[Tobias Sammet:]
Where castle looks out to a valley
Where I'm given all the love that I crave
Not afraid of the rising sun laying bare my brittle soul
[Hansi Kürsch:]
Cold is the wind
Bringing forth clarity
Time rushing on
And nothing will remain
There's no glory on the last journey home...
[Tobias Sammet:]
Looking down from this pure cope of heaven
Onto an ocean of white that drowns
All the noise and decree
And the craze in empty eyes
Wide-eyed I'm lost in my imagination:
A dream of love
I've got to suffocate while I keep on waiting
For the hour I'll be called to realize
And see it all before my eyes
The sky is crawling down the mound
Into the deadwood on the ground
They say
[Hansi Kürsch:]
Spectres flare and spit and rise
To mingle with the skies
And take all that's never meant to be
[Tobias Sammet:]
A fire in the dark for the fool's gonna find his way
Gonna run and never get away
Is it love that glows in fiery alignment ?
Starry-eyed ? Maybe living a lie ?
[Hansi Kürsch:]
A lonely heart in and endless line
[Tobias Sammet:]
Oh raven child
Raven child
[Jorn Lande:]
Bewildering and strange
The scent of spring and cherry blossoms
Sweet scent of rain
They're calling you
Astounding how it is
Not the same it used to be
When you're compelled behind
The crenel on your own
The tolling of the bell, is there
Anyone to tell me what they wanna say
[Tobias Sammet:]
Voices go on and on and on to me
But their tongues won't permeate
Throughout my soul
[Jorn Lande:]
In your altered state of mind
In vain you're chasing light
Your master in his frown
Denial of the crown of creation
You're mad to think you are
[Tobias Sammet:]
A fire in the dark for the fool's gonna find his way
Gonna run and never get away
Is it love that glows in fiery alignment ?
A fire in the dark for the fool's gonna find his way
Gonna run and never get away
Is it love that glows in fiery alignment ?
Starry-eyed ? Maybe living a lie ?
A lonely heart in and endless line
[Jorn Lande:]
Light breeze in the crowns of the willows
Green fields as if the day was on the wane
Grow faint and attain to perfection
What a backdrop for a diamond
[Tobias Sammet:]
And so we sway in the wind like the willow
Meant to give way to the order of the storm
Won't leave a mould in the marsh of the ages
A tired chevalier of fortune
[Hansi Kürsch:]
Blue and serene once a sky swanned on magic
The unborn in the stream of destiny
Time flows to become a mound of nothing
For a broken soldier of fortune
[Tobias Sammet:]
On my...
[Chanting:]
Comin' down
Goin' all the way now
You won't get away
You know
Finally the way you're shown
You're goin' now
[Jorn Lande:]
Into the light
[Tobias Sammet:]
In the light there's a crack torn open
From underneath the day
In the light, but a crack, is it growing?
Feel the dark rolling in, your way
Feel the light look away
It's gonna blind you
Ignite you spirits fly
[Jorn Lande:]
See a light to uncloak their master
To arouse the beaten mind
[Tobias Sammet:]
In the light there's a crack torn open
From underneath the day
[Jorn Lande:]
You dream and fly
[Tobias Sammet:]
In the light, but a crack, is it growing?
Feel the dark rolling in your way
[Jorn Lande:]
Hey raven child
[Tobias Sammet:]
Feel the light look away
It's gonna blind you
Ignite you spirits fly
[Jorn Lande:]
Uncloak the raven master
To arouse the beaten mind
You tuck away yourself inside
You ride away on the inmost light
Your soul glowing opal-blue
[Tobias Sammet:]
A million voices fade away
I never really got what they're trying to say
For my words there's no getting through
[Jorn Lande:]
Oh, you sail to the night's plutonian shore
You drift to sleep
You can't take no more of this
And like a raven child
You spread your paltry wings and throw
Yourself into the wind to escape from all below That despised the raven child
[Tobias Sammet:]
Am I awake or is it an evil dream
Or maybe the ugly in between
Like me... a weak hermaphrodite
[Jorn Lande:]
A burning soul in unimpaired parts
In quest for light but it was the dark
That embraced the raven child
[Tobias Sammet:]
A cloak of invisibility to curtain
The fate of deformity, no...
Darkness let me in
[Jorn Lande:]
Off to the night's plutonian shores
You dream and hope you won't wake no more to this!
Flying raven child
[Tobias Sammet:]
Oh fiery eyes
[Jorn Lande:]
Flying raven child
[Tobias Sammet:]
Oh fiery eyes
[Jorn Lande:]
Oh to escape from all below
Spread your wings... and go
Like a raven child

the cinematic/theater comment is pretty on point, avantasia albums almost all tell a story and the singers actually sing character parts, it's literally a rock opera

Great reaction to this masterpiece. Lande and Kursch lift this Sammet composition to heavens. Jørn Lande btw, turned 50 this year. His voice is like fine wine! Jorn is actually from the same county as me, my mother in law used to babysit him when he was a (raven) child! Lol

Glad you make this and glad you enjoy this song. Avantasia is my favourite band. You should do more of this honestly, they are amazing, they use a lot of singers for their songs. And it even doesn't matter which song you chose, Avantasia just make you smile during the entire songs, just like your son said. A couple recommendations: *If the son enjoyed the slow parts, try listen or react to something from Blind Guardian, like Nightfall. Hansi not only do slow parts, he has a power voice, like you listened in Mirror Mirror. But if you react to Nightfall, I'm pretty sure your son will LOVE IT. *Jorn Lande is a beast of a singer. In Avantasia, you sould listen more songs of him, like Promise Land, it's brutal. *And last, if you prefer another EPIC song from Avantasia, listen to The Seven Angels or even Let the Storm Descent Upon You, probably their 2 best songs (not counting The Raven Child) You won't go wrong reacting to any Blind Guardian or any Avantasia song, honestly. You will chill and smile for sure.

That theater part wasnt too far off. Each vocalist does play a character in these albums. They're concept albums and they tell a story. Listen to their album "The Mystery of Time" It tells the story of an agnostic scientist in Victorian London, and the sequel album "Ghsotlights". Jorn Lande. ALWAYS plays the Devil or some other form of Satan Or Lucifer.

It's great seeing you guys reacting to more Avantasia! I love seeing people enjoy the new song. :) I've probably listened to it at least 30 times already. Avantasia is my favorite band, and I pay very close attention to what's going on with them, so I'll try to address a lot of things you mentioned in this video. I believe Adrienne Cowan is going to be doing the whole tour, not just in North America. The woman who usually tours with Avantasia, Amanda Somerville, can't do it this time for whatever reason, so the band had to find somebody else. It's more than just backing vocals she would have to do, but leads on any of the songs that feature a female singer, such as "Farewell" that gets played every concert. Quite an important role! If you want to see an Avantasia concert, don't count on Toronto at this point. It may sound weird that they'd only do one Canadian city, but Avantasia has some touring limitations. They are a supergroup, and it's incredibly difficult to arrange a tour during a time that enough members are free from their own bands, plus the expense of flying a huge crew around the world. Avantasia does their best to make it to as many places as they can within a three month period, but I believe the five US/Canadian dates are the only ones we're getting this tour. If I were you, I'd be deciding between Montreal and Chicago. For me, I'm going to head to Worcester despite it being 8 hours away. If you make the trip to go, it will be worth it I promise! Haha, if you think it's great this song has three vocalists, you're in for a treat if you listen to more Avantasia. Some songs have four, five, or even more vocalists! Try "Let The Storm Descend Upon You", "Stargazers", or "The Seven Angels" for loads and loads of singers. Jorn is seriously awesome. I think he's my favorite Avantasia guest singer. He's been part of a lot of bands over the years, plus his solo work. Two great songs he's sung are "Crying" - Beyond Twilight and "Missing You" - ARK. "Picking the right singer for the right part of the song" - yes, that's part of Tobias Sammet's musical genius at work. There's a lot of interviews where the interviewer asks him how he chooses his guest singers, and he says his intuition leads him to the perfect voice. He also records (almost) all the demos himself while singing like the person he wants to have sing the part so whoever it is knows exactly how they're supposed to sing it. Guitar work - that would be Sascha Paeth! Tobi's "partner in crime". He does the mixing and production too. "The vocalists are like actors playing a role" - you got it! Avantasia is a rock/metal opera project/band. All the albums form stories and the singers are characters. The stories stretch between two or three albums each, and Moonglow will start a new story. It's part of the mystery and intrigue of this song because it's taken from the middle of the story and we have no context for it yet. But Tobias Sammet is always the protagonist and the other singers/characters interact with him. Just wait until you have the whole album to listen to. :) Listening to a whole Avantasia album can really put you in a dreaming state. It's a trip. Uh, I guess if you have any other questions regarding Avantasia, ask away. I'll probably be able to answer. PS the whole "young-drizzle" thing made me laugh really hard :)

If you guys like Avantasia, you should check out Ayreon. It's similar in that Arjen Anthony Lucassen brings in a bunch of guest vocalists for his albums. The song "The Day the World Breaks Down" features 11 different singers! (from Blind Guardian, Kamelot, Epica to name a few.) There is a music video made with behind the scenes clips.

He teamed up with Jorn Viggo Lofstad (Tony Hawk) on 3 of his solo albums, (The Duke, The Gathering, and Out to every nation) From the album :The Gathering, there is a song called "Abyss of evil", where Jorn Lande sings, and Jorn Viggo Lofstad (Tony Hawk) plays the guitar. I knew Avantasia before, but this song is different then the ones I've known. This reminded me a lot of Iron Maiden. ^^

If you liked it, listen to The Scarecrow, its very very similar. Also last albums feels different than the first ones. Try to listen also to Let the Storm Descent Upon You. They do varied music, it's like different styles in this band.

Nice to see you reacting to more songs from Avantasia! Out of all their +10 minute songs this is my least favourite at the moment but we will see after I've had some time to process it. I know it may sound wierd but this did not have enough melody for me. Or maybe the melodies were more backgroundish and not the normal almost pop-like catchy tunes I like. Either way I have great hopes for the upcoming album and maestro Sammet is my all time favourite composer so I'm sure there will be songs that I like too. Avantasia has a huge fanbase so of course there will be variations in styles and this one just wasn't for me. Hoping for one more single before the album comes out, preferably Michael Kiske style power metal anthem ;)

Sami Savolainen I totally agree. To me the vocal melodies sounded forced at first, not in the chorus though. Hanoi is underused in my opinion and this song has nothing on Let the Storm or The Scarecrow
