I have this mic with upgraded tubes running it through a wa73 with a distresser comp and it sound magical. The tube change really smoothed out the already aire top end. That along with that wa73 color and the distresser comp on mild settings for tracking (no more then 3 db of gain reduction) and you got something modern sounding in the highs and vintage sounding in the mids perfect for vocals and acoustic guitar never tried it on anything else. For R&B, Pop, Emo this chain above is heaven.

This may actually be the best microphone review I've ever seen, def earned a sub. My cv12 didn't have wobbly jacks, however the selector knob is starting to strip and I only ever really use it in cardioid so I just fumble it to that and leave it. The stock tube went microphonic on me about 2 months of use, but I can't really fault the mic for that. I think it's got a Westinghouse 12ax7 in it now(whatever I had laying around) and an eh12at7 did a great job at rolling off some of the high end, though I didn't really prefer it. It's a great sounding mic for the price, though using it with the singer I have been I wish I'd have gone for the warm audio u47 instead.

Excellent review! I own this mic and I agree with all of your comments. The shock mount is an absolute disaster. The bungees detach with even the slightest touch. @todddammit46283 жыл бұрын
I remember reading Nathan Chapman (former TS producer/engineer) say that the CV12 Swift used was modified quite a bit. My guess is someone in Nashville who knew what they were doing turned it in to a more respectable C12 clone. My guess is that's why Avantone has the Black Lion Audio modded version of this mic now, to get you closer to what TS was really using. And I haven't seen her use that mic in a long long time. I was unaware she used it in 1989. I thought she stopped using it after she stopped working with Chapman/Big Machine.

I have one of these. I think it's a good basic affordable CK-12 type dual element capsule mic with multiple polar patterns. Replacing the XLR-7 cable that came with it with a Gotham or Mogami cable is a must and very affordable. My pattern selector rotary switch is firm and crisp. It's got a ceramic switch body. Perhaps Avantone changed the switches in the supply build after yours was built. The two audio receptacles in mine are not the greatest. Mechanically, the XLR-7 female does not feel as secure as the XLR-3. The XLR-7 appears designed to have some lateral float built in so that its pin holes will line up with the male pins on the cable more readily as the cable shell locates into the socket. Both the XLR-3 and XLR-7 sockets are easily replaced -- they are chassis mounted and wired to the power supply PC board -- they are not edge mounted directly to the PC board. Edge mounting of sockets to a PC board is typical of inexpensive construction. It can lead to early failure of the socket connection as it accumulates connector insertion cycles and the insertion stress that places on the socket/PC board solder joints and the socket mechanicals. Wire connecting makes the sockets more easily replaced.

Almost two years later, they finally responded to a plea to just return it as-is. I think they lost it. COVID was a hard time for everyone. In the end, they sent me a brand new one. Did some extensive study on the frequency response charts. I think the engineer picked it for her because it works for her high frequency voice. I don't think it's meant to be a spoken word microphone for males especially. At first the frequency response charts look super strange. If you are a male and you get a good deal on this microphone you are definitely going to have to adjust your voice a little bit and use a thick pop filters so you can do some proximity recordings to get extra bottom from this guy. I regret not watching this movie 10 years ago, when my wife and I decided to buy this microphone. In my opinion, it has a certain analog magic in its sound, and this, apart from its color, is certainly the reason for its popularity. However, I fully agree. Both ports on my power supply move, so I break out in a cold sweat every time I have to connect something there. The microphone is huge, so you really need to think about a decent tripod, and controlling its angle and height is difficult. Its positive features, such as sensitivity, may also be a problem in home conditions (it records a lot of room reverberation, but can also react acoustically to electromagnetic interference, squeaking like a nasty mosquito). This pleasing saturation in the high tones can also be difficult to control in the mix (eq, de-esser, etc.). I'm ashamed to admit it, because the CV12 has a very noble sound, but as a result, when I wanted to record something quickly, I was more willing to use the mxl 990 (less room reverberation, sharp sibilants, but it naturally stuck out in the mix of female vocals, and it always turned out to be easier for processing), or even Shure SM57, while the cv 12 rested proudly in the closet. I definitely do not recommend it as the first condenser microphone for home recording, but rather for people who already have a more universal microphone and are seduced by its sparkling analog sound. Great review as always!

This is exactly the same mic and power supply as the Apex 460B. You can google Apex 460B and see the insides. There are several companies that get their names on these mics. Telefunken USA, Nady, Apex, Avantone and many more. The Chinese factory will make this and other mics with what ever you want on it. I got one and made a a C-12 out of it by replacing the tube, transformer and capsule. I built a copy of the C-12 circuit on breadboards and replaced the cheap Chinese XLR connector with a switchcraft one that had better pins. The power supply pattern control was very clunky but I did not replace that but it was a favorite of the engineers at Fantasy Studios. I think Journey may have used it but I can’t remember.

What's funny is I use a lot of these mics on the same track - the Avantone CV12, the KSM32, the NT1 (and a DPA 4041 for lead) to give the multitracked vocals a lot of texture. They have some similar sonic qualities but are obviously different enough to provide interesting depth. IMHO there are fewer and fewer great mics that stand head and shoulders above the rest. This is not a bad thing as it indicates how well modern technology and manufacturing has been able to level the playing field. Most modern mics are not degrees of better or worse but rather degrees of difference in sound character. This perhaps is because a great many different mics now have the same or very similar capsules and internals.

The cv-12 is now only $400 and I think its amazing for the price considering the case, shockmount, polar pattern selector, and the ability to swap out the tube inside the mic if you wanna try to capture a different sound. If you wanted to go even cheaper I'm really impressed with the rode Nt1. But if I had the extra money I would go with the avantone for the extra bang for the buck.

I like it. I also liked the MXL. I've heard that in professional recording studios when deciding which microphone to use on the talent they line up a bunch of microphones in a semicircle, have the talent stand in the middle, and fart really loud. Then they listen to each fart and decide from there which microphone to use.

You may joke about that but new order did learn how to use a synth by recording farts in the studio

would love to see you review the MXL V69 Mogami, its a tube mic the cost around 250-300, would be cool to see how it compare to this and other mics you have.

I cannot fault Bandrew too much for failing to achieve a proper trajectory with such a large and un-aerodynamic box, but the fact that he hit his ceiling shows a dangerous lack of regard for the safety of himself and those around him.

So far I'm on that CV12 budget... but that TF51 is where it's at. The CV12 sounds thin compared to the body of the TF51.

Loved the sound of the Telefunken.

Excellent review!! I have been looking for a new mic that can work with my unique vocal tone (kinda John Elefante-ish) this is great input.

My power supply unit is totally fine. Nothing loose or jiggly or wiggly, or... my unit is fine. I keep a flat-blade screwdriver in my kit for those threaded knobs.

12:50 You made me laugh, you have no idea how much I needed that on that precise second. Thanks. On the other hand, were you using some kind of low cut filter for the Shure KSM32? Because I think I heard less of the AC with that one. Also, I'm understanding why you like the NT1 so much.

I heard Taylor Swifts power box had built in auto-tune as well.
