One thing I loved about this series as well as this episode especially, was how they showed Katara is a very good waterbender- she is going toe-to-toe with a master and holding her own, while being practically entirely self-taught. That alone is insane, considering she had to learn so much. But, in modern media, they would push it further and make her defeat him to show how strong she is, when in reality that just doesn't make sense, she isn't on par with a master yet and she is self-taught, there ARE limitations, and by showing she has the ability to hold her own but not enough to win is perfect imo for showing a strong character without making it a snowflake. They do the same with Sokka and his teacher, I believe, which shows its retained throughout the series, understanding that just because someone is skilled there is still limitations, and even after a lot of training you still have much to learn compared to veterans.

Seconded. She was not going to to toe. She was a child, and it was a schooling session. And she got humbled, and she proved him wrong. Basically Pai Mei & Kiddo the remake from Kill Bill Her going toe to toe wasnt the point. The point was her guts & potential. Even he had to admit she had talent. Don't gas her up, there's no need.

there is no legitimate reason why they’re refusing to teach the women waterbending when they’re perfectly capable of it. it’ll even be more beneficial for everyone to learn both so it just boils down to misogyny so katara’s anger is justified.
