Looks like the big old main tree took a significant step forward towards your styling goal with this pruning. ~ I’d be tempted to try using a mini-vacuum to clean up all that debris but that would eliminate the period of landscape meditation. ~ Cactus and succulent shows are always special. It’s like visiting a museum of fine art. This year I’ve been delving more deeply into the wonderful world of c&s. I replanted much of my frost free front yard with them .

Heh I also watch Lyn's channel (Desert Plants of Avalon). She has a very good knowledge of cacti and succulents. I really do recommend her channel and website. It's really impressing ho internet connects people now. I'm Polish and I was born during the communist rules in Poland (late 80's). We had almost nothing in Poland then, just one channel in tv and no computers at all. Now after the communication/internet revolution, I watch some Canadian guy's channel about bonsais, and we both know some Irish cacti breeder. And it all happend so fast. Really impressing.

Hello again Nigel! Love the video as always 🙂. I need some advice. I collected an Elm earlier this year and when I collected it, it was a stump. Now there's all sorts of new branches and growth. I plan on letting it grow throughout the summer and possibly next summer as well. The problem is I know that I have to prune it eventually. Do I prune the branches back to the first set of leaves? Or do I prune to the shape I want my canopy? If you have an email I can send you a photo of the tree. Thank you for your help. And if you have videos that could answer my question that would be awesome too. Thanks again, Cory
@grobonsai5 жыл бұрын
Hi, to give you some food for thought I'll jump in until Nigel helps you out. You can use either approach to build the branches, but there are advantages and disadvantages to both. If you prune to the profile, the tree will look better if you wire in some movement to the primary and secondary structures. From time to time you will need to cut back to improve the taper over time. You can get a pleasing image in the short term, but risk a less natural appearance. On the other hand, you can use more of a clip and grow approach, which involves growing the branches out to the approximate required thickness, then cutting back to the appropriate length, to develop movement and taper. So in the short term the tree can have a messy appearance, but eventually you can end up with a very natural finish. Hope that helps add clarity, but in terms of your tree, only you can decide. Good luck, Darren

So there are some trees or roots laying on the surface that look like deadfall. Are these roots or are they trunks of dead trees that you employed for effect? Whatever the answer they do look great. Thanks Nigel! You are an asset to KZbin and the bonsai community.

If you develop the large tree as a spire top type tree, won't that end the "Avatar" theme you've been talking about for the last year or so?
@TheBonsaiZone5 жыл бұрын
It will be different, the Avatar trees will have a more spreading horizontal canopy, like a flattened umbrella shape. The Cathedral style will be more vertical than horizontal with spikes reaching skyward.

Can anyone tell me... I made my first bonsai a month ago and I finally got a good pot for it. Is it ok to repot it now?
@TheBonsaiZone5 жыл бұрын
If it is a hardy tree, you should wait until spring. If it is a tropical tree and you have good weather and the tree is healthy, it should be fine to re pot now.

No,no, Nigel. To do Avatar..you need to find gumdrop shaped rocks..planting the tops with tiny tree's and mosses that hang over the edge..and with a few done in different scales..are hung by monofilament line from...tree branches? Metal pipes?..whatever. I've seen it done with Aquarium plants- if you want me to link that ,I could...or search youtube for Avatar aquariums.. Looks very much like the movie.

Hi Nigel. This is Ivo the handicap handyman . I have a question. I told you I'm growing mostly unsuitable trees for bonsai one of them is the money tree. I know that you experimenting with it too. With one of the trees I got lucky. When l cut the trunk. I got three new branches. Now I want to cut them as well . I hope that they will divide in two in order to get some canopy. I'm planning to leave some leaves. I don't want the branches to die back. Any advice? You can send me an e- mail to send you pictures
@TheBonsaiZone5 жыл бұрын
They are a little unpredictable when pruning back. Sometimes instead of producing more branches after cutting, the branch will just die back and another branch will grow strongly. I find the best strategy is to let the branches grow until they become woody and then hard prune them. Most of the time, you get the results you want, but not always! The Money tree seems to want to do it's own thing!
@iiaart5 жыл бұрын
@@TheBonsaiZone I guess so. The branches are wooden already but not too long .I will let them grow this year. Thank you

Hi Nigel! Have you ever looked into the 24 architecturals models of tree's growth pattern? The work of Francis Hallé and especially the book of Jeanne Millet called "L'architecture des arbres des régions tempérées"? It is quite amazing how those concept can be applied to the Bonsai world. It is like if the Science finally confirmed what the Lingnan style knew all along! I think by knowing what kind of architectural model a certain tree use it can be even easier to replicate a natural look and to predict how the tree will react to pruning and how to achieve a branch structure that resemble a tree in nature. Link to a Francis Hallé paper: www.ac-sciences-lettres-montpellier.fr/academie_edition/fichiers_conf/HALLE-2017.pdf Link to Jeanne Millet's book: www.google.ca/search?q=architecture+des+arbres+jeanne+millet&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwiyrKiM0criAhUiwFkKHZuAD8gQ_AUIECgB&biw=1430&bih=698
