With such a large heavy tree, I don't mean to sound critical, but you missed possibly the most important aspect of potting up collected material. Securing it tightly to the pot/soil. With such a light substrate that heavy tree will surely move about as it settles in to the pot, right at the same time that it is trying to reestablish new fine roots. It would've been simple to screw some rings into the inside base of that pot and tie the tree down securely, and some more around the top outer edge to hold it tight from above. After growing it for so long in the ground surely you'd want to give that yew every chance to survive?
@TheBonsaiZone5 жыл бұрын
Thank you, it is planted deeply and is kept out of the wind so it shouldn't move at all.

@TheBonsaiZone5 жыл бұрын
I rarely use cut paste, only on some trees that dry out very quickly. I have read that for most trees it can promote rotting under the paste and create a good place for insects to live. Here is a discussion on this subject, some like to use paste and others don't. www.reddit.com/r/Bonsai/comments/3mlqou/to_paste_or_not_to_paste_some_anecdotal_results/

@TheBonsaiZone5 жыл бұрын
I always let the tree grow with vigor before cutting it back, usually this means 6 to 8 pairs of leaves on the branch. With some of the coniferous trees, you can tell the vigor of the tree by the number of new shoots in spring and the strength of the growth. If the tree is vigorous then the tree can be pinched back, if it is not, then I leave the new growth alone until the tree is growing strongly.

If you leave all the dust and fine particles in the soil, they will block up all the small gaps between the granules. You need those gaps in the soil for good drainage, to allow fresh oxygenated water to the roots, and prevent root rot. Nigel did a video on this a couple of years ago, highly recommended :)

Big tree big work! Wow, that's going to need some big updates! ;) On a side note, I noticed I have the same root rake, or pretty close, as you! It happens to be here at my computer for some odd reason. I showed everyone, my kids, my husband, my pets!!! All I got was blank stares... O.o They just don't get it, I have the SAME root rake! My rat, Dobby, ran over and sniffed it, then shrugged like "That's not food, what ya want from me?" .... sigh.. the root rake.... it's the same... oh well... :P

Cool, my daughter has a pet rat too! Which root rake, the one I used in this video or the brass one?

Stupid question... Why not just spray the soil off instead of a root rake...
