Then, Koh the Face Stealer stated that the Avatar he stole the girlfriend’s face from was from a very long time ago…only to be revealed as Kuruk. It could’ve been explained away as the Spirit World having a different flow of time or counting of years…but I don’t mind Kyoshi’s age, especially because there’s an interesting lore attached to it.

The math is definitely wrong, but the answer is right. Kyoshi was the last earth avatar. But she came before Roku. The order is the same as the intro: Water -> Earth -> Fire -> Air. That would be the last water avatar -> Kyoshi -> Roku -> Aang

@@toxincloud1629yeah, for people interested since its not explained in the show (mainly because her age was a math error by the writers): she was immortal due to a technique she had learnt from a supposedly immortal nomadic assassin. The technique was supposed to be developed through deep meditation and was described as mentally breaking down your body into parts and keeping on dividing those parts further until you end up with a very microscopic understanding of exactly where everything is supposed to be in your body. Then using this understanding you “put” everything back into place whenever it falls out of place. The idea is that this essentially “freezes” your body in that state of when you performed the deep meditation. I’m not sure if its ever really explained how they put things back together but as both Kyoshi and the original nomad were earth benders, you could speculate that its an extremely advanced level of earth bending which manipulates the “earth” in the body such as minerals.

@@geraldthegoose1685 yeah, I doubt anyone would have been given these powers normally but the writers threw out a lot of important historical dates without checking they made sense and it ended up making Kyoshi very old. This was the only way to make sense and even still a powerful ruthless avatar deciding to die after a couple centuries isn’t really explained. I don’t think they’ll reintroduce the technique in any future media. It does sound like the earth bending equivalent of a certain scary technique we see in the future of the series

The swamp is just an intentionally mysterious place, in addition to the tornado which Hu admits he can't do, there's also the vine that slaps the bird, while Hu the only known person to control vines is happily sitting around at their campfire implying it was the swamp itself moving the vine that time, but there's nothing more in particular to like investigate or do in the swamp.

Also fun fact Avatar Kiyoshi was recognized as an Avatar very late in her life. By coincidence she ended up being a maid in the house of the guy who was wrongly recognized as the Avatar. She was finally discovered when a friend of Avatar Kuruk, her previous reincarnation, heard her recite a love poem he wrote for a woman he fell for. Also another fun fact, she ended up dating the daughter of the woman her previous reincarnation was in love with.

Oh boy the Kiyoshi episode is finally here. When you guys are done with the series you should read the Kiyoshi novels. This episode doesn't do justice to how much of a bada*se she is. Kyoshi is Earth. Remember the first couple episodes where they said that they follow the same order, when they saw the statutes. Also, just so you don’t get confused, Avatars live longer than most people, and Kyoshi was the longest lived Avatar.

I don't think Avatars generally live longer lives. Kyoshi is a special case, and minus the 100 years spent in the iceberg, Aang died pretty young. As far as I know, most the other Avatars lived pretty average lives, length wise. Roku is a good example since he's the one we see the most.

It actually is a mystery where the tornado came from, but as Aang said he felt like the swamp was calling to him, Katara and sokka convinced him not to go down there, so the swamp called harder hahaha. Not spoiler, but the swamp thing was just in that episode, it is left as a mystery as well as self explained that the swamp is indeed alive, he had to meet Huu so he could get some wisdom from him and the swamp, and the thing with the girl, a total mystery it seems 🤷🏻‍♂️

Immediately before Aang was Avatar Roku, who was a born a fire bender. Roku lived about a hundred years. Before Roku was Kyoshi, who was born an earth bender. Kyoshi is the longest lived Avatar in history living about 230 years. Before Kyoshi was Avatar Kuruk whose life was a series of tragedies and died at 33. Before Kuruk was Avatar Yangchen who was born an air nun. I believe she lived about 100 years. Before Yangchen was Szeto, a firebender more famous as a diplomat and bureaucrat than as a bender. There is a running theme that most Avatar have to fix the mistakes or unfinished business of the previous Avatar.

Pro Avatar tip; the sequence at the start of every episode (Water, Earth, Fire, Air) is the Avatar reincarnation cycle. Keep that in mind, and it'll be easier to figure out when Kyoshi and Roku were alive.

Whenever you've finished the series, and if up for some reading, there are some books about Kyoshi that are good! Also for Yangchen (the previous Air Nation Avatar) although you haven't met her yet. Also to clear things up as far as Avatar order, the cycle goes in the same order every time. Air, Water, Earth, Fire, and then it is Air again, etc. As far as relevant Avatars, you have Yangchen (Air) Kuruk (Water) Kyoshi (Earth) Roku (Fire) Aang (Air) Korra (Water) (she is from the sequel series The Legend of Korra, which takes place after Aang's life.)

16:00 yeah sometimes the episodes seem to be abrupt happens a lot because there were multiple writers for each episode. Each one had one slot and didn’t do one for next few episodes. So they had to cram it all in. 20mins is barely enough to fit a single story in but they need to build on it in a later ep connecting to the next writers.

The writers of this show were good at many things, but maths was not one of them, so the timelines don't add up. Kyoshi used airbending to push the two land masses apart. She is definitely an earthbender--she dressed in green and lived in the Earth Nation--but she uses all the elements in her bending. You have to remember--that's normal for an Avatar. Aang is kind of an anomaly in the sense that he's still learning how to be the Avatar.
