Thanks for covering this Ted. Would love to see more Avatar content. The material they've put out looks pretty great so far.

glad to see there is still some momentum behind non D&D related TTRPGs here on your channel, keep up the good work!

ive played the game and it feels really good, its a great point fo entry to ttrpgs if you are new, the corebook has very solid guidelines to play in 5 eras: kyoshi, roku, the 100 year war, aang and korra and there is technology for all of them, its more about, bombs, traps and gadgets batman style you can use most of the basic mechanics in a short adventure, i think you can get a good grasp of the game in that time, in the corebook there are guidelines to separate an adventure in chapters as a tv show so you can make short sessions meaningful or just go for normal longer sessions the strongest point of the game imo is that it gives you a lot of very good guidence to build the world, what were the nations doing in each era, important places, a bit of the relationship with the spirit world, common conflicts of that time, etc and the mechanics interact with it very well, it really does feel like you are in the avatar world

I would love to play this game, but I think I'd like to go Kuruk Era. So much unexplored potential.

Small correction: Technology can work in and era. Page 28 of the full rulebook lists a few inventions of each of the available eras, which can be an inspiration for a technology focused character. Oh, and one other thing that may be relevant to some viewers: The starter set recently became available internationally.

I was on the fence about buying this because I wasn't ready to buy the full core rulebook yet but I definitely will be picking it up now. I am just anybody else demiplane is not a virtual tabletop it is a digital toolset just like D&D Beyond but for multiple systems including alien, Pathfinder, several others. Definitely worth checking out if you like playing multiple systems and they're adding more every couple of months.

I've been running a game since early last fall. I personally enjoy it. Observationally, over noticed people tend to be afraid of balance shifts in the game, which can mute the energy at times, so being up front with players that balance does not equate to health is I think very important

I'd like to see a playthru of one of the starter sets. I backed the kickstarter and got the stuff but I haven't sat down and read through everything yet.

To be clear though, demiplane nexus is not a vtt. It's more of a website that keeps an extra copy of the pdf version of the books and character sheets and what not.

My partner backed the Kickstarter and we've done a few one-shots, its a pretty fun system, free and fluid combat with a lot of dynamic storytelling that doesn't get bogged down with too many rules.

My wife, some church friends, and I have the kickstarter and played a few sessions (once using the old quickstart adventure, and just starting a new adventure using one of the Wan Shi Tong adventures). It's seems fun. I think the main struggle is I'm atill a very rookie GM trying to find my footing. It's tough to get the hang of.

It looks good, but I'd personally put the Chaosium starter sets (Call of Cthulhu and Runequest) higher based on the solo adventures to guide you through the systems.

To be technical, the eras covered by the shows are technically the Korra Era and the Hundred Year War era. For the purposes of Avatar Legends, the Aang Era is set after the events of ATLA.

If you want a 10/10 starter set you should check out the Zweihander Boxed set. It is jam packed with so much material. It totally blew my mind! The value is insane. While Im not a fan of the game itself the boxed set is phenomenal and very well priced for the sheer amount of content.

My suggestion for a name for the actual play series would be Starter Set Off/Starters Set Off. I find it a dumb, but enjoyable pun.

If you were a backer of the Kickstarter and got all of the products from it would this be a good pickup as well? Or not worth it?
@davidbeer5015 Жыл бұрын
I think if you already have the kickstarter, the main reasons I feel to get this would be 1) you want the dice, 2) you want the adventures. However, for 2, Magpie has said digital copies of the adventures (which I think ought to come with the pregen characters?) would be available later as well. Another solid reason might be to have an easily accessible set of rules and characters to bring new people in without overwhelming them with the full books.

Yo that art looks official, is this canon? When did this thing came out?

It delivered to backers this year. It was a multimillion dollar kickstarter for an official TTRPG using PbtA style mechanics.

It is an interesting system, but DON’T YOU DARE even think about playing an evil campaign with it! (Seriously, the stupidest design choice I have ever read in a ttrpg book). I was actually considering buying the books until I read that it is set up for a group of heroes only. The authors explicitly say they want you to play the game only how they want you to play it. That is lamesauce. Not buying it.
@idrisabdullah3492 Жыл бұрын
That’s kind of whack but I can understand why they want to keep it on the rails. Might not be hard to home brew a villain group though
@ObfuscateMoon Жыл бұрын
@@idrisabdullah3492 you would have to homebrew almost an entire 2nd half of the game. Characters utilize a balance system to their actions/ideals. All new ones would have to be written, and the current mechanical backbone tweaked to fit. The game is so on-rails, it even punishes a morally grey perspective.
@idrisabdullah3492 Жыл бұрын
@@ObfuscateMoon oh that stinks. That reminds me of when Matt Colville mentioned he was working on the Star Trek rpg and the people in charge didn’t want characters to potentially be ugly. Still, it’s only a matter of time until someone creates a new version of the balance. Maybe by taking a a group goal or loyalty and having that be the base for how it works? Idk. I’ll check out the book and give it a shot
@davidbeer5015 Жыл бұрын
I get you disagree with that point. You're free to decide if you want to buy it or not for those reasons or others. Personally, I question the desire to play an evil campaign at all, as that does not sound fun to me. But Magpie is also allowed to design their games as they desire. Avatar stories are often stories of heroes. They're stories of heroism, hope, finding balance. Similarly, they're game Masks is, from what I've heard, is primarily about being young superheroes specifically. Magpie writes PbtA games and stuff around the stories to be told. Similar to how they have things in the book like "avoid death as a consequence," because 1) losing a character cna be rough, and 2) it might not be the most interesting thing narratively. Not to mention that due to licensing, everything had to go for approval with Viacom and Avatar Studios specifically. Like I said, you're welcome to disagree with it. But your disagreement doesn't necessarily make the decision stupid or wrong. Them saying to play as heroes is because that was the scope the game was wrtiten around. You're even welcome to to take the system and break it so you can do that. No one is going to show up at your door to stop you. But it's just..not what the scope of the game was intended to be, and you'd likely be missing out on a lot of potential in the game if you do that.
