Step into the pitch meeting that started James Cameron's Avatar! Subscribe for more Pitch Meetings: goo.gl/ho3Hg6
James Cameron’s Avatar took the world by storm in 2009, securing its spot as one of the highest grossing movies of all time. Isn’t it kind of weird then that it barely seems to have had any impact on pop culture? To find out why that is, let’s step inside the pitch meeting that led to the world of Pandora, the Na’vi, and a whooooole lot of thinly veiled racial stereotypes. What led to the decision to have giant blue kitty kats? Why don’t the multimillion dollar Avatars have ANY tracking capabilities? What’s up with the super generic villain? All these questions and more are answering in this pitch meeting! It’s super easy, barely an inconvenience!

I've read that the video is rated higher by KZbin, if the video, or at least some of it, is watched before the like button is hit. Makes sense, slows down the people trying to artificially inflate likes. So, I always wait (and also always hit like).

@@newloon Except it's a completely different type of movie. It offers a different experience, different characters, etc. Just because 2 movies have similar premises, that doesn't mean they are the same. Avatar is more concerned with being an action-adventure, fantasy popcorn flick, that most people can enjoy. While Dances with Wolves is a slow-burning western drama about Native American culture. It's much more concern with characters and the grit of reality back then, than it is at being a fun adventure. Avatar is also much better directed than Dances with Wolves.

"Unobtanium" is actually a sort of joke term from engineering about a supposedly perfect element that could do everything the engineer needed it to do. It made its way into sci-fi and has been a fairly common term in the genre since, so having it in Avatar is basically a reference to all this.

The problem I have is James Cameron said he had been sitting on this story for over 15 years waiting for the technology to be able to make it. He also has stated he is a big scifi fan and read lots of science fiction novels. Well I can tell because most of the plot dealing with the trees being connected and possibly sentient and the natives bonding with animals and burying their dead in knolls int the trees, and humans coming to the planet. Then one of them works with the natives with the plants and animals to overrun the outpost. Even the whole jungle planet and using branches as roads and how dangerous it is... This was written 10 years before Camron even dreamed of Avatar. He blatantly ripped of MidFlink by Alan Dean Foster. It was a new York Times best seller and his Pip and Flinx series was VERY popular among sci-fi readers. He never even gave a nod of his hat by saying he was inspired by sci-fi writers back then like... Nope he hogged all the lime light after stealing the idea for most of the story. The only think even partly original to the story was the use of the Avatars themselves. Otherwise it was a pocahontas store based in an Alan Dean Foster world.

He has over 40 books in his Commonwealth series including about 15 in his Pip and Flinx series. His first book was published 50 years ago and he is still writing.
