I saw for the first time small paralel between Zuko saying "I am sorry" to his father and to his uncle. Father burns his face and says he ashamed himself, but Iroh is simply responding " your apology is accepted" and smiles.

Uncle Iroh's voice actor Mako was also in Charmed. That girl you saw who was happy about Zuko being burned...she was 11. It's funny, I think Aang's story is sadder but Zuko's is more easy to connect to. What happened to Aang couldn't ever happen to anyone else. I connect to it because I was disowned by my whole family and friends and everyone I knew when I left the Jehovah's Witness cult I was raised in when I was 25 but I also had an abusive father so I connect to both. It's just a funny thing I see people often connect more to Zuko's pain and feel more for him nd I think that's why.

I think aang and zukos stories are equally tragic, I find it sad that most people dont recognize aangs tragic story more, and dont realize how horrible it is

@@spectorthecritic1723 Uh, everyone in the faire nation would have to die for their stories to be equally tragic. That's what I mean, it's a tragedy so big people seem not to be able to take the whole thing in. Zuko's is also a lot more personal. But Aang is younger when his happens, with less time to deal with it, and he handles it far better and people give him no credit.

i think a beautiful dichotomy in this episode is the firelord and Iroh. where the firelord didn't forgive zuko even with him on his knees begging. Iroh accepts his apology as soon as he gives it.

that's definitely some poor decision-making from the air elder. "what's best for the world" at this point is for the avatar to be a well-adjusted child. making decisions without regard for his feelings, turning his world upside down, is not a great way to raise a child you can rely on, and the only thing the elder gets right is that the world needs to rely on him.

While I agree that the elder was wrong, they were literally months away from a genocide. I can understand why they'd be worried about Aang playing games instead of training

@@mlgnerd13 Was it even months? For all we know, Sozin's Comet came two days after Aang disappeared. So, yeah, bad decisions from the monks, but *completely understandable* bad decisions.

@@Talisguy I’m just assuming months based on the fact that fire nation army would have been pretty close if the attack was in the next few weeks. At that point, hiding the Avatar would have been more important than a few days of training

@@mathies3598 They did have a temple essentially in the fire nation, so I'm sure they saw signs of war. Increased production of weapons, troop movements, withdrawal of diplomats, etc

This episode is my favorite in season 1. I loved Zuko from the moment he first came on screen in episode one, and so I tend to judge reactors based on their opinion of Zuko after The Storm. It was kinda sad when the monk got upset at Gyatso for playing games with Aang instead of training because, in a way, he was training Aang. Not physically training him in bending, but mentally. Games are great and fun way to think strategically and teach puzzle solving skills. The game they were playing was a great mental training game as it taught him to think strategically and carefully plan out his next move. But it was also a way for Gyatso to help Aang have some fun because he’s just a kid! Like I get he’s the avatar and the elder monks could sense Sozin approaching with the start of the war, so they needed Aang to train hard and quickly, but they were putting so much pressure on him! Also, it’s unfair those kids excluded Aang from their game. They had no problem with him being the youngest air master ever, but when he’s the avatar, it’s suddenly unfair? That makes “total” sense! Also quick note: the reason why Aang had his arrow tattoos and the other kids didn’t is because air tattoos are given to those who have mastered air bending.This usually happens when air benders are a little older, but Aang got his tattoos at a young age because he invented the air scooter, showing he is a very skilled, advanced, and gifted kid, thus making him the youngest air master ever! This is revealed in the comics.

I think one of the saddest thing's about Aang's story is that he ran away right after seeing Gyatso, got stuck in ice, and then woke up in Katara's arms. In his mind, like maybe a day or two had passed by the time they went to the Southern Air Temple in episode 3. If you remember, when Aang had spoken about Gyatso in that episode, Katara had said "You must really miss him" and there was that really hesitant way Aang replied "Yeah..." It kind of hits you that he had like no internal time between seeing all the people he loved to finding out they'd all been genocided. The dual theme here I believe is normal lives of children being abruptly and apocalyptically uprooted, especially since Zuko was only 13 here.
