Except for the airbender, all of them appear in some capacity in the show: the firebender is Azula, the waterbender is Pakistani, and the earthbender… was originally designed to be one particular major character, but plans changed during development so they became different, but the original design was reused for a very brief character in one episode (for those who know, the flashbacks in a certain Book 3 episode…)

One cool aspect about when Aang fuses with the ocean spirit, he only pushes with his waterbending, as the moon who pulls is gone. Just the attention to any small detail in their world building is really what takes this show from a 9/10 to a masterpiece.

Exactly. I love every time Iroh steps up and faces down his own side when he realizes they are in the wrong. Team Avatar are technically the enemy but Iroh will absolutely stand with them at the drop of a hat against the more corrupt and evil Fire Nation members. ANGELA, STOP READING THIS! SPOILERS BELOW! It's one of my favorite parts in Legend of Korra, seeing Iroh has basically become the only non-Avatar to have access to the Spirit World and is living his best afterlife there when Korra visits.

The idea of Sokka a brave warrior falling in love with a woman destined to become the moon... sounds like the perfect ancient legend to me. It's so romantic and yet so mystical and legendary. We have so many stories like that shared across different cultures.
@nicomeneses886
@nicomeneses886 6 ай бұрын
And just like many stories, there's an element of coincidence to this event. Like probably in some ancient time, someone was talking about a specific animal being a harbinger of disaster and it just so happens that said animal appears before a big disaster and that story gets solidified into a legend. In this case, it was just a lunar eclipse, but it just so happened that Zhao's crusade and Yue dying happened with it and this tale about her being the new Moon Spirit got passed along. We actually get confirmations from characters later on that what happened in the siege was indeed just an eclipse...which implies that whether Zhao killed the Koi fish or not, it would still have gotten dark. It just so happened that Zhao striking the fish coincided with the start of the eclipse and Yue dying coincided with the end of it.
@CutTheVioletWire
@CutTheVioletWire 6 ай бұрын
@neses886 first off: this was never confirmed to be a lunar eclipse. secondly, the idea that zhao killing the fish and a lunar eclipse just so happening to happen at the same time is INCREDIBLY lame and also not consistent with the themes of the rest of the show and episode (spirits and their connection to the natural world are very prominent in the series), and thirdly, the moon turns red and the benders lose his bending after he puts the fish in the bag. last i checked, the moon dosent turn red during an eclipse lmao. also yue actually DID become the new moon spirit, as we see her later in the show. im not sure how you managed to be so incredibly misinformed about this
@nicomeneses886
@nicomeneses886 6 ай бұрын
@@CutTheVioletWire it was actually confirmed in the show that it was a lunar eclipse! Katara said this in The Library episode in book 2: "That makes sense. Think what the lunar eclipse in the North Pole did to the waterbenders. This is huge." I really don't play this card often, but I've watched all episodes of Avatar as it aired back then in Nickelodeon and rewatch it a couple of times a year or just let it play in the background...so I'm kinda sure of that.
@CutTheVioletWire
@CutTheVioletWire 6 ай бұрын
@@nicomeneses886 based on literally every other piece of evidence provided by the series, she definitely did not mean lunar eclipse in the normal way. it was a lunar eclipse, yes, but it was a supernatural one caused by the death of a spirit. its made super clear by literally everything else in the show, and to ignore that to say its just a coincidence is incredibly ignorant, and quite frankly stupid.
@reasonablekinda2269
@reasonablekinda2269 4 ай бұрын
@@nicomeneses886I’m sure the eclipse was based on what was done to the moon spirit, we clearly see that when the moon is captured the moon turned red and when it was killed the world went colorless, this was no natural event at all, this was entirely based on what was happening to the moon spirit, I have also watched the show several times including very recently.

Aang's fusion with the ocean spirit is one of the most awe inspiring and terrifying scenes in the series. I mean, he took on the ENTIRE Fire Nation invasion navy like they were ants. Also, while the moon spirit is dead they made one of the most incredible visual artistic choices in the series. Everything is in black and white, with the exception of the fire blasts and what they light, Aang and the ocean spirit fusion, and... Yueh's eyes. SO GOOD!
@xuvial1391

I always viewed the final scene as something that the Ocean Spirit did, not Aang. At the end of the scene Aang looks like he's coming out of a trance, and in a later episode he described as having a bad dream and he couldn't control his body. The "No, it's not over" line was the Ocean Spirit saying it. Basically Ocean Spirit got VERY angry when the Moon Spirit was killed, and as a final act of desperation it took control of the Avatar's physical body and avatar state power to unleash all it's vengeance. It only stopped when it noticed that the Moon Spirit had returned, and then it gave Aang control of his body again. Then it killed Zhao on it's own.

34:47 I love how all the waterbenders immediately bow down by default the moment they see the Ocean Spirit, together as one culture. It really strikes home the immense cultural and religious importance the Ocean Spirit has to the Water Tribe, and the awe (and fear?) of what they are witnessing. Little details like these are what makes this story so amazing.

19:14 I always assumed Yue's father overheard Sokka defend her and decided he was the best chance of protecting her. He might have been in denial about his vision of her leaving the mortal world, hoping he could prevent it. I imagine that's why he's not mad at Sokka for failing to protect her at the end. He knew it was her destiny.

When I first saw the reasoning for Pakku giving in to teaching Katara, I wasn't that keen, but then I realised it was deeper than what appeared on the surface level 'she's the love of my life's grandchild'. He would have had to process that values he was living by and instilling on the younger generation, are what drove Kana away and prevented her from being happy in the North. He must have realised through this personal connection that he, and the Northern tribe, needed to change for the future.

33:58 katara couldn't have healed the fish because without the moon spirit, there is no water bending. Also, on an unrelated note, I think that a cool detail that could be overlooked is that when Aang and twi are water bending, they are only pushing the water, since lah represents pulling as the moon.
@MiseryKiss
@MiseryKiss Жыл бұрын
It's such a beautiful detail: Aang's avatar state is triggered by the death of the moon spirit, and he walks into the spirit oasis and is empowered by the ocean spirit. You can see, the form they take resembles a koi fish! And then, when the moon spirit is restored, you can see them turn and look at the moon, then fizzle away. Not when the fight was over, but when the balance was restored. I wonder, was the ocean spirit trying to enact revenge? It wasn't mindless destruction, it only targetted the fire nation, but is something so violent it's normal nature? Kept in check by the harmony of the ocean and moon's duality? So deep. This show man. Unreal.

I don't think that was the case that time. The trigger for the Avatar State being last ditch and nigh uncontrollable, I mean. It seems like this might've been an intentional connection. The spirit definitely helped Aang trigger the state, but his actions seemed more deliberate than the other times we've seen the Avatar State. Like the move was to connect with the other spirit to temporarily become that balance in order to fight back. If that makes sense.

I think Yue's character demonstrates the show's excellent storytelling. She was introduced as a side character who we only recently got introduced to. To think, we've known her for only three episodes and her death still hits hard! It's in part how young she was, and a lot to do with how she knowingly and willingly chose to sacrifice herself, without hesitation, and the reaction of the people affected by her death, combined with the poetry of how the moon would be a constant reminder to them about their loss.

When you hire somebody as good as Mark Hamill, you better use him! Koh would have gotten me. There are a few easter eggs in the show for those that understand and read Chinese, because they made effort to get that right- they hired a Chinese calligrapher as a production advisor, just like they hired a martial art expert to get the different fighting styles right. It is a matter of respect; but what other American kiddie show would have bothered to pay that respect to its Asian inspiration. Iroh is the boss. No spoilers about Zhao.

I think that's because, as adults, we have a much deeper appreciation for him and his wisdom. He remains one of my favorite characters in any media. With your empathy and compassion for these characters that I’ve seen so far, I hope you’re able to see the truth about Azula and don’t let your base impression of her blind you to her depth. I also truly believe that Zuko and Iroh are so blessed to have each other. That relationship is one of the most emotionally impactful things I’ve ever seen. And I love how wholesome and beautiful it is. Also, Yue saved the world that night. Aang helped fend off the Fire Navy, but Yue literally saved the world by sacrificing herself. The "since I lost my son, I think of you as one of my own" part is shattering. It's amazing how a show can deliver such a solid first season, and the following ones are EVEN BETTER. I think you already knew this but the voice of Fire Lord Ozai is Mark Hamill. When he read the script for the show, he said it was most likely going to be cancelled at episode 4 because he felt it was "too smart" for kids, but that he was glad it had continued because it's a show that plays up to the kids and doesn't underestimate them. I like what you say about all these kids being affected by trauma. It's something to remember throughout the series. All of the child/teen characters that appear are characters born in the war. The war has shaped their behaviors, and this can be seen a lot in the Fire Nation characters. Of course, Iroh, Ozai, Paku, all of them were also born during the war, but they are now adults. And Zhao is a character with a bit of a megalomaniac complex and the world is better off without him. Regarding what you say about "why the waterbenders didn't cause an avalanche or something"; having watched the series several times, I think the bending of an element is not the same for everyone, and depends a lot on the inner power and training each person has. That's why sometimes fire beats water, or even a single earthbender could defeat 5 others at a time (write this down somewhere :P). By the way, get ready, you're going to love to hate Azula; she's by far one of the most capable antagonists I've ever seen in a series, and dangerous as f***. And in closing, I know this must be the most repeated comment in the reactions to this episode, but: "everybody is a gangsta, until Uncle Iroh raises his voice".

There is a theory that Yue was supposed to be the next avatar in the cycle, but without the spirit of the thousands of avatars prior she was silent when she was born. So the moon spirit simply filled the empty space in her soul, which is why she was able to give that part back to save the moon

Oh, man. If you get this teary eyed just hearing Iroh talk about how he feels like Zuko is his son, because he lost his own. I'm NOT ready for tales of Ba Sing Se. I saw it was posted a few days ago and that's one of the things that brought me to your channel and this reaction series. I'm working my way there patiently, but now know I'm bouta shed some tears with you once I reach it lol..

Listen, your first girlfriend turning into the moon isn't something you just "get over." That kind of an experience is rough, buddy. Also, the "death and destruction bit" at the beginning when I knew about Yue was a fire blast to the heart!

I know is easy to miss the first time but Katara's healing is a waterbending technique. Killing the moon spirit removed waterbending itself, so Katara can't use healing. Yue's sacrifice was the only way.

What I really like is that the Episodes have this theme of Ying and Yang and we think oh look opposing sides that's so fitting. But really there is a big character that doesn't fit with the theme. Zuko... He is what Ying and Yang actually means, having both sides inside you

I fell in love with this series from season one and I have so many fond memories of watching this show. Yes seasons two and three go even better, but I still absolutely love season one and I'm kinda irked that people seem to treat it as "lesser". Avatar is an amazing show, all three seasons of it, no exceptions.

It’s a surreal moment to realize that for those few minutes, when the ocean spirit lent Aang its energy directly and the moon was gone, for that short time, Aang was not only The Last Airbender…but The Last Waterbender as well.

The ocean spirit did indeed release a spirit attack as Aang suggested initially. Interesting also, that when the chief talked about faces we would not see again, it flashed to Yue, but not long enough to foreshadow her death too much. I think these episodes are some of my favourites.

Zuko’s sister’s name is Azula, she’s a great character can’t wait to see your thoughts on her haha. Just so you know, you were saying Katara should heal the moon spirit, she couldn’t because no moon means no waterbending (her healing is a part of waterbending) and the fish was already dead (she can’t revive people from the dead). As far as Zhao being dead or alive that was a big debate when this show was first airing. Mild spoilers: you won’t get a definite answer unless you watch the sequel series The Legend of Korra. Personally I always loved season 1, it has some of my favorite episodes! But season 2 and 3 definitely just get better and better, there’s so much good stuff coming up!

Man. I've watched this series over 50 times at this point, and that last scene when Zuko tries to save the man who literally tried to kill him, who was STILL trying to kill him... it gets me. It speaks so much to the actual core of who Zuko is as a person. He was never really a villain, but a victim.

The form Aang takes in that battle is actually a giant koi fish. It's him literally merging with the Ocean spirit. A lot of people kinda misunderstand and think that scene was Aang just going into the Avatar state intentionally, but it was triggered by the Moon spirit's death and it was entirely the Ocean spirit in control, as if it possessed Aang really. And if you'll notice, the Ocean spirit only stopped when it saw the Moon had returned. Which I think is very beautiful.

I love the complexity of the writing in this show. Like Yue's father asking Sokka to guard Yue instead of her future husband. Yue's father knows that his future son in law doesn't really care about Yue all that much. Just the power he will gain. Where as Sokka truly cares about her, and will defender her with his life if needs be.

The best kid-shows take the kids seriously. And with this, they get great. After this final I thought they can`t surpass this. But they did. This was not Aang alone. Much of this power was from the water-spirit. And Zhao, well I don`t want to spoil you. You see it very much later.

The show always felt like there were stakes, but it still felt like a kid's show. The humor sometimes felt like it would undercut how serious things were, at least that's how I felt. It wasn't until this episode when Yue sacrificed herself to save her people that it really felt like oh this is really serious. The show felt different from that point on, and as others have said "Now it really gets good."

The Creators needed an episode that could be counted as a masterpiece amongst all first season finales on its own, and also build up a previously more kiddish show into something so deep and engaging even Nickelodeon couldn't ever hold them back anymore. Well, I guess they delivered on that; the result is they got permission to go all in for the next two Books. The level of detail in this show, from the very first episode, is breathtaking. From the eye colours of the characters, to the Chinese writing on every page, every frame is a true work of art. On this episode, I love how there is no colour when Lā (the Pull, the Moon Spirit, Yang) is dead, except for Yue's irises, and for firebending. Then all waterbending, including Katara's healing abilities (hence why she couldn't heal the fish) immediately ceased to exist; but Aang, driven by the Avatar Spirit, communed with Tuī (the Push, the Ocean Spirit, Yin) and let himself be possessed by them and used as their vessel and channel to exact vengeance upon the Fire Nation; notice how in exacting vengeance, the 'Koizilla' (as the fans have nicknamed the fused Avatar/Tuī entity) could only push, and not pull the water, because the Pull (Lā, the Moon) is dead; another detail is that, when just before the scene cuts to Yue sacrificing herself, the Koizilla is facing the immense Fire Nation fleet, but when the Moon returns, the scene return to him much further into the sea, and facing a completely empty ocean: a subtle way to convey that the Ocean spirit, through Aang, just killed everyone, and was still marching forward and would probably not have stopped until it reached the Fire Nation, if the gentle Moon hadn't reappeared to calm down his wrath. This death toll is relevant for what is about to come. Also, 'a man needs his rest' is a callback to the first Chapter of Book One, when Iroh says that to Zuko when he refuses to settle down from finding the Avatar. There are many more details, but some are spoilery and I'm tired of typing anyways. It's extremely refreshing to see such a review with a standard of quality akin to professional magazine critic, for a serirs so deservedly amazing. I'm very excited for every episode of this reaction with you. Get your tissues ready for what is to come.
