Gotta love how bold this show is. They play the loooong game by introducing The Face of Boe all the way back on Rose's first trip in the Tardis with Eccleston and when they finally drop this bombshell on you and just move on like it's an ordinary thing, lol.😂

There is room for debate on whether or not the giant head was in fact Jack. Face of Bo vs Face of Boe for starters. Personally, I do not think humans, if allowed to live long enough, would grow to be giant heads. I think the name and the involvement in this story arc ("You Are Not Alone") is meant to be implied as purely coincidental. The Doctor and Martha BOTH saying "No!", first in shock at the thought of it, then again in dismissal that it couldn't be.

So a big thing that’s sort of alluded to but not really expanded on - in the Classic Series, trying to avoid death is like, a huge part of the Master’s motivation - he uses up his entire regeneration cycle and goes to extreme lengths to prolong his life (including trying to destroy Gallifrey, possessing the bodies of other people and attempting to steal the Doctor’s remaining regenerations). So when the Master, who is obsessed with prolonging his life by any means necessary, chooses death over being with the Doctor, that shocks him to his core. Regarding the Face of Boe thing, I’ve always interpreted that as just a stupid throwaway joke - I don’t think that Jack is literally meant to be the Face of Boe.

The Face of Boe reveal is Jack being an ass to mess with the Doctor. In the previous episode Martha mentions something in front of Jack about “The Face of Boe” but he didn’t react or say anything about it, but then all of a sudden he says this? Absolutely not. He’s messing with the Doctor and Martha, but it’s a great prank because unless you were paying attention (it took me too many watches to catch it), you wouldn’t know and would believe him, too.

Watch the next episode to meet our new companion you say... Boy are you in for a shock and a hell of a time in season 4.

Someone has probably answered this, but they call Jack the Face of Boe because of what Jack said. He was a poster boy for the Time Agency and he was the first person to sign up from his home in the Boeshane Peninsula. We see where he's from in flashbacks in Torchwood, which I know you said you aren't watching, but I just thought you might like to know. Also, since you aren't planning on watching Torchwood I can share this spoiler for that series: Martha Jones teams up with Jack and Torchwood in a 3 episode arc in Torchwood Season 2.

Yeah, Jack, The Face of Boe... There's that cannonball.... And boop, there be the Titanic... Next episode, epicness and Wilf.

My headcannon: The last humans at the end of time go on their rocket to "Utopia", when they get there they find the Master has put a Cyberman-style factory there that converts them into the Toclafane. The Master then converts the tardis into a paradox machine which ENABLES the paradox of future humans killing their antecedents. I've been eagerly awaiting this season end, knowing how awesome it is. Also for the end of season 4 AND FIVE: I'm sorry.... I'm so very sorry.

In the Third Doctor serial "the Mind of Evil", the Master saw a projection of his greatest fear. That took the form of a giant shining and floating Doctor, laughing at him. This episode makes that fear come true almost exactly.

The thing is, U.N.I.T. probably _would_ be able to develop a way to kill a Time Lord. Like Torchwood, they’re an organization dedicated to protecting humanity from threats both supernatural and extraterrestrial, and they’ve had a lot of encounters over the decades with both the Doctor and the Master. However, unlike Torchwood, U.N.I.T. has always been one of the Doctor’s staunchest allies.

Martha had one of the shortest runs of the companions, and admittedly she's not my favourite. Nevertheless, she was brave, smart, loyal, attractive as hell, and this three-parter and the Family of Blood episodes had her doing so much to help the Doctor. She truly is one of the greats. Also, to this day her mom is my least favourite of the companions' family members.

I’m so pleased this wasn’t ruined for you. All the talk of spoilers in the previous episodes made me twitch about it. But the way you visibly froze as the information hit was great. The Face of Boe lived for Billions of years they say (not millions). And at the end of his long life a friend sat by his side ❤ I’m not a big fan of these finale episodes, but I do think it’s one of the more devastating ones. Largely because they never seem to address what actually happens to the humans looking for utopia? Like the paradox was undone, but what are they afterwards, without the Master’s intervention? Where did they even end up when they left in their rocket? The lack of resolution bothers me. 7:47 lovely to see you learn to not to get attached to likeable minor characters in DW

The Jack/Bo reveal is definitely the highlight of the episode. I also have a hard time following the psychic link hand-waving the Doctor back to full good health and the Master cowering in fear... Normally I can roll with a lot of the hand-waving in Doctor Who, but this just felt really weak. I think it should've been more like the unified thinking is what unified the human race against the Master, severing whatever mental control he had over them, and then they use his sonic on the Doctor to bring him back. It's really just the "regen" and immunity being a result of the psychic stuff that I roll my eyes at.

OK, so now you've discovered the Face of Boe/Jack Harkness connection. It's important to grasp the "meeting people out of order" trope from time travel shows. Because this isn't the first time such a thing has happened - similar to "Bad Wolf" - and it won't be the last. This is not a spoiler because this happens continuously throughout the series, and is not unique to any given character arc. It has quite literally been "beaten to death." Prepare to enjoy.

Fun Fact from Classic Who: In the story The Mind of Evil, we get to see what The Master's greatest fear is, and it is actually a vision of The Doctor (Three at the time) hovering over him with absolute power. So in this episode, he got to experience that very fear.

The first time we meet the Face of Bo is in the second episode on the station watching Earth blow up. The one with Cassandra as the "last human". When you think about Jack as the Face of Bo, it puts a whole nostalgic spin on it. He's seeing *his* first doctor (9) and Rose together after so long and can't acknowledge it or say anything to them.

This is my favourite Davies finale tbh. I think it wrapped up all the season arcs really well. The evolution theme culminates in the humans saving the day by holding onto their hope and solidarity while the world is being destroyed by childish nihilists who devolved and abandoned their humanity out of fear. Martha finally develops some self respect. The Doctor, after failing to save the 4 other remaining Time War survivors from their own self-destruction and being unable to connect with humanity all season, finds an actual living Time Lord and that Time Lord would do ANYTHING to reject the Doctor's connection. I get why some people aren't as fond of this finale as I am but I adore it. As soon as they mentioned the Paradox Machine I knew they'd reverse everything and the stakes for me stopped being "can the Doctor and Martha save the world" and turned into "can the Doctor save his grief-stricken ex boyfriend from a mental health spiral before he gets himself killed by one of the many people he's hurting."

Rygel is unsurprisingly in his element among royals. And he gets a kiss! All the others get a kissing scene, glad he finally did even if it's a joke. (It was many years ago I watched this series so some of it feels new to me.) And I do appreciate John is willing to make such a sacrifice for the greater good. As for him and Aeryn I kind of get how love/romance would be difficult for her as it's a somewhat alien concept to her. I mean she was in love with that guy, but she didn't quite get that's what it was at the time and she also betrayed him. So there's that. Lastly congratulations!

The “magical” fix on this episode often gets put down by fans, but a crazy head-canon here: this is why the Doctor and the human race are tied together. This moment echoes backwards and forwards in time - why else do people suddenly put their faith in a weird guy in a police box who asks them to do strange or dangerous things? Why else would he always keep coming back here, even when half the time he ends up having to rescue someone from the human race instead of vice versa?
