Not a lot of people realize this, but when Iroh says he's returning to Ba Sing Se as a tourist, he really means it. He is quite capable of handling himself and his needs, and the White Lotus is always there to help. He is not really seeking refuge. He is simply accompanying Zuko, who may be better described as a refugee. So yes, Iroh isn't a refugee, though he is playing one. He is a tourist!

Yeah, they keep making Katara seem like this needy girl that is just fighting for Aang's approval and attention, instead of just seeing her as a genuine friend that cares and is concerned. Katara isn't trying to be that but I guess some people view characters differently in these reactions.

If they were going to do it that way, why have tickets at all? Just have the money taker take the money and then open the gate/take down the rope/lower the bridge/whatever and let them pass.

But it's a huge room full of people, and she's busy talking to other people in line, so just give the family their tickets. The family goes down to the boat and presents the tickets to the ticket-taker at the gangplank to get on board, while the Gaang takes the Serpent's Pass. The ticket-taker wasn't part of this, so how would they know who the tickets belong to?

The Serpent's Pass was first mentioned in an early version of the script, "The Cave of Two Lovers". In that script, a character talks about crossing "The Serpent's Pass". The line was eventually cut, but the name inspired part of this episode.

The Desert and The Serpent's Pass was really the "point of no return" that forever solidified Katara as my favourite character. This girl just kept the group of furious Aang + deranged Toph, high Sokka & Momo, NO Appa together, and fed them water while not drinking any herself. She doesn't get any thanks for it, nor does she have anyone emotionally supporting her. Next episode she continues to care so much for Aang, takes out a serpent like a boss, and MIDWIFES for goodness sake. No one should be have to be forced into a caretaker role from such a young age, yet she kicks ass in it while being an amazing fighter too. It both makes me look up to her and feel so much pain for all that burden she goes through. MVP right there.
