Mako is the voice actor of Iroh who passed after a short period of esophageal cancer. They finished Book 2 with him and then hat to replace him for Book 3. He was able to Sing „Leaves from the vines“ just before passing , wich makes hearing it much more sad.

Nah he recorded it in the studio. Dante Basco said so during podcast. It is a common misconception that he sang the song on his deathbed.

Momo curling up in Appa's pawprint as it begins to rain is such a beautiful moment. We're excited that he's found a clue yes, but they still depict it as fairly mournful, something this show does so well. Appa's absence and others' losses are prolonged and/or permanent, so the characters are shown having to deal with those emotions again and again, and in different ways. So so good.

I followed you for months just to get to this one episode. From times to times I rewatch it just to check if I still have some humanity left (and I cry all the times). Geez, even when he's playing the song to the kid I already feel the goosebumps and get my eyes wet. Surely one of the most emotional moments not just in animation, but in any show ever.

You know what, I've watched Avatar through about 20+ times since my childhood and I never realised why Aang was at the zoo before! I always thought it was random and useless but it actually makes sense now that he might have thought Appa could've been sold to there! (feeling pretty dumb lol)

I see a lot of people mentioning how Mako recorded Leaves on the Vine literally crying on his death bed, which is heartbreaking to be sure. But what I haven’t seen mentioned is the end of Aang’s tale. The little girl who sees her cat in the zoo and says that line was a make a wish foundation child who wanted to be in an episode of avatar. The creators even designed her character to look how she did when she recorded it, down to the clothing and all Also, regarded this being Mako’s last recording as Iroh, now that you have the context; this is the reason Iroh doesn’t speak for much of Book 3. After the loss of Mako they were trying to be respectful as well as find a suitable replacement, so Iroh’s next spoken lines beyond this episode weren’t taken lightly at all Excellent reaction, daps for not crying. God knows it’s not easy, particularly with context

This is the most loved episode by the fandom because of Iroh's story. Mako was Iroh's voice actor, who passed away before the episode came out. I know the picture of Lu Ten is so detailed because is an avatar style picture of Mako when he was young, he used to be in the army, the text in the picture says "General, we'll meet again when we win the war, Lu Ten." and the sad version of Leaves from the Vine was literally the last thing Mako recorded for the show, I heard he recorded it in his bed when his condition was worse. He will always be remember by the fandom.

I remember hating this episode and the next as a kid. The library episodes aired in the break between the first half and second half of the 2nd season, the serpentine spine and the drill aired as the first episodes in the second half of the second season. So then we get one episode of plot advancement followed by two anthologys. It seemed like the show was going nowhere fast lol. I appreciate it more now.

Mako was dying of Cancer during this season. He passed before it aired. "Leaves from the vine" was sung by him on his death bed The tears you hear are genuine, as he is coming to terms with his death. The photo of Lu Ten is based on what Mako looked like when he was younger. The text around the photo translates to: "Dear General Iroh, see you after we win the war. Your loyal son, Lu Ten."

Really the only interesting thing about this episode for me is Iroh and Momo's story (only b'c of the end of Momo's story). Everything else is just so damn filler-y. It's my least favorite episode of the entire show...which doesn't mean anything REALLY negative given the show is amazing.
