Never thought about that. Good catch! I have no doubt that's exactly what the writers intended. Benders have powerful energies in them that they can control but, not completely. So it's not absurd to think that there might be some drawbacks to that. I mean... everything in this show is based on martial arts stuff and the energy thing is no different. But it's very difficult to explain to someone with no background in martial arts without it just sounding like a bunch of mumbo jumbo. Also, not all of it matches up one to one. Which, as a martial artist myself, I appreciated. Because, if I already knew then, it might have spoiled some of the mystery for me while watching. ^_^

@@funnylilgalreactsWhy? He had no idea he did a good thing. We know that because we know all the context, but he doesn't. All he knows is that he did the opposite of what he have been told his ENTIRE LIFE. Listened to one family member while betraying all the others and forfeiting "his destiny" once again, this time by his own hands. We know he actually just found it, the real one, but he doesn't. He was raised in place where Avatar wouldn't be considered "good" at all and would most likely be slandered to the dirt 'cause his actions interfered with plans of Fire Nation rulers for hundreds of years. From his point of view he has no destiny left, his past invalidated and no vision what's good and what's bad anymore. That fundamental uncertainty is why he got sick, not because he did "one good deed". In reality a person's immunity is highly dependant on their mental state too and people who can't find a purpose destroy themselves all the time, so idk, feels pretty natural to me. The scene in StarWars III where Padme dies "just because" is actually pretty close to this one in substance, and I heard many opinions of it being unnatural as well. That one was written far worse, too hasty, but still understandable for anyone who's been there. Zuko's struggle on the other hand, as everything in this show, was written very well and leaves far less questions. I guess it should be pretty hard for a healthy person to imagine this condition if he actually never was in this dark place named "I don't know why to live anymore". But you actually have a very good empathy, so I think you can understand. UPD: Upon reading comments further I realized that indeed, Iroh must've also spoke about all that from his own experience, he was in that dark place too when he lost his son. Good that he's there for Zuko, it's absolutely crucial to have someone close around in such times.

Yin and yang aren't necessarily good and evil, they can be opposites yes, but they also work together. Like mercy and justice or passivity and aggression. They mirror each other like Aang and Zuko do. Aang is naturally gifted while Zuko struggled to become a proficient bender, Aang had a great destiny thrust upon him while Zuko had his stripped away, Aang tried to escape it while Zuko aggressively pursued his. There are even more parallels that get revealed later as well as some other major things that I won't spoil. But it is telling that Zuko saw the avatar in his reflection. This show is full of mirrored characters, relationships, and situations. Like Zuko and Azula's sibling relationship vs Sokka and Katara's. Fun fact.... the Earth King's appearance was pretty much modelled after Puyi, the last emperor of the Qing Dynasty. I think a lot of Ba Sing Se was modelled after the Chinese imperial court; particularly with respect to the court's decadence, bureaucracy, and court intrigue where the real power often rested in the hands of court bureaucrats. That and a sprinkling of the Ming Dynasty's secret police, who would spy on soldiers, rebels, scholars, and the general population alike to monitor their loyalty to the throne; and who were powerful enough that official ministers would fear and even kowtow (an act of subservience where the person kneels and bow their head to the ground) to them.

Something really cool that I don’t see get talked about very much is that all four nations’ leadership are serounded by symbols and imagery is the original benders of their element. It is harder to spot with the water tribes because a lot of it is done in writing not in English. But the two cheifs of the water tribes use the symbols of the Ocean and moon. The four air temples, where Air nomad leadership is, are covered in bison painting and statues and what not. The one that i’m sure no one misses is the fire lord and dragons. The eath king’s palace is covered in badger moles. And the throne has a huge badger mole behind it. It shows a serious level of respect for the original earthbenders even if no one (besides Toph) bothers to learn from them. It’s such a cool cultural detail. Makes the world feel more lived in.
@Scarabswarm Жыл бұрын
That was a real good catch, you noticing that Aang and Toph earthbend differently. Most Earthbenders use a style based on Hung Gar Kung Fu, while Toph uses something closer to Praying Mantis style Kung Fu. Aang kind of does the same Hung Gar style, while also mixing in more floaty movements from air and water bending as he switches stances from offense to defense, or mixes in other elements. Yeah, by this point, Sokka is definitely the leader of Team Avatar, and he is wielding Aang like a WMD on behalf of the Earth Kingdom and Water Tribes. He has also matured enough he has no idea anymore that he is the leader. They are working off Sokka's brilliant strategy. But their enemies are too. Azula is now using the same strategy against Ba Sing Se that Sokka used against the Fire Nation drill, learning from and adapting his tactics to suit her own ends and resources. Kind of like the Fire Nation has appropriated Sokka's airship tech, though we've yet to see it. The Earth Kingdom is lucky that Team Avatar isn't trying to "bite their heads off," metaphorically speaking. At this point, they have a waterbending master, an earthbending master, and Aang, who is an airbending master and pretty dang good at water- and earthbending too. With Appa's air power, Team Avatar can devastate the Earth Palace's entire defensive force. If they were actually aiming to seriously maim or kill? Those folks would be Dead. Isn't it interesting to imagine what it might be like if they added some firebending to their repertoire?

"but why when you know war is going to happen" In fairness- we established a few episodes ago that with the Earth King being a figurehead, Long Feng is the government official the Earth Kingdom military actually answers to (though I get the impression he takes a pretty hands off approach and that they're unaware that the King isn't involved), and they *are* actually fighting the war. The Earth Kingdom's already been fighting a war- understandable the Dai Li prefer the guy who's been shittily running things over one who has never run anything. And really, if he wasn't so stubbornly opposed to hearing out Sokka's info or cooperating with Team Avatar in any way, Long Feng himself could have just as easily received and aided with the eclipse plan without need for the Earth King. He brought this situation on himself by refusing to even let the gang speak with the military leadership about the plan they'd come to share. I'm not sure Aang would have ever let the fucked situation in Ba Sing Se stand, but Feng could have at least tried "if you keep quiet about the war to the civilians I've brainwashed, I'll arrange your meeting with the generals and you can carry out whatever fucking plan to save the world"

I'm not sure if anyone has commented this before, or if you're interested, but you mentioned Toph's hand movements so I thought I'd share. The 4 bending styles are based off real life martial arts. Fire bending is Shaolin King Fu, Water bending is Tai Chi, Air bending is based off Baguazhang, And Earth bending is based off of Hung Ga, which utilises wide stances and powerful movements. But Toph is different, she uses Praying Mantis style, which uses tucked in elbows, thin stances and short hand movements (it's really recognisable by the way she holds her hands), She's the only person who uses this style, and legend says the person who created Praying Mantis style in real life was a small blind woman. Hope you found this somewhat interesting, and love your reactions by the way, no-one else actually analyses what they watched and gives us their thoughts, like you do.

After watching that series you can be certain that you didn't miss anything, and it also gives you a whole new appreciation of all the love and effort that the makers put into the show. The guy is also really funny, so the series is not boring in the slightest. Just make sure not to watch it before you finish the show. A lot of things he points out is foreshadowing or callbacks, so even if you watch an "overanalyzing" of an episode you're already seen, there might be a spoiler for the ending of the show.

It's funny to me how before watching the chapter you asked a series of questions and the chapter answered almost all of them. Zuko's dream/hallucination comes mainly from the fact that he has been under so much pressure for so long and believing he wants something in particular (to capture the Avatar), that having done something that helped the Avatar, like freeing Appa, created a very big internal conflict within him. And it is very important to remember this "what Zuko really wants or what someone imposed on him" because, as I said in other reactions, at the end of the day he is a teenager, and none of us at that age really knew what we wanted. And we would never get tired of hearing you say you love Mai, because we love her too!

Two more episodes and it will be de end of the season 2. Honestly, the arc of Ba Sing Se its the best and the season's ending its a pure heartbreaking moment, again I recommend you have tissues near

The different bending styles are based on different real world martial arts. Airbending is based on Tai Chi, Earthbending on Hung Gar.

Nah, its not about to slow down. ep 19 and 20 is close to breaking the gear shift. Its about to be wild af and they made me fall in love with the show so much when they first aired. Good stuff is on the horizon, for us. Not the cast lol

Soka, he is very capable, a strong leader. Imagine if sat on a council that goverened a city the size of Ba Sing Se!!

24:23 Damn, first you correctly guessed the trick with Toph’s letter, and now this! I’ve rarely seen a reactor guess the letter trick right, and I’ve never seen one guess the Kyoshi Warriors trick before!

Sieges are such interesting battles. And a side from the siege of the Northern Air temple, Avatar does them well. I think this is my Favorite siege on Avatar though. Short and sweet. I like how Aang is not playing around in the opening fight. He has that earbender soberness and determination in this fight which is good whiles in the air because Toph is unable to help while flying.

That's not a siege. It's an assault. Siege specifically refers to encircling the target and cutting off supplies and retreat in order to compel surrender.
@cattievogelsong96 Жыл бұрын
@@Skyhighatrist i looked it up and i think you’re right. I suppose it is more accurate to say assault on the palace. I aways though of a siege as an attack on a building, castle/palace what wave you, with the aim of control, surrender, occupation or other form of conquest. I suppose it is not a siege if it doesn’t last more that a day. Good to know.

If Jet survived . . . . 😢 nope, IRL after receiving that sort of blow to the torso . . . well let's just say they couldn't accurately show the damage with a Y-7 rating. I am also a big fan of Mai 🎉

I forgot to say this on the last AtLA video but the "lost Oppa arc" Is seriously some of the best episodes of the entire show. And for this video all I can say is there is a good reason for many of us that Toph is our favorite character. Even if she's not your favorite You have to agree she is the most powerful. Not counting Aang when he's in the avatar state.

Don't know if anyone remembers let alone mentioned it, but if I remember rightly, the whole "I'm sorry" dialogue during the battle of the Earth King Palace was a reference to an old school martial arts movie where the people sparring with the main character said "We're sorry." before attacking them. If anyone remembers the name of that movie, please post it.

I think you're right in your yin and yang interpretation at the end, but off in your understanding it. Instead of good and evil opposites, consider the koi fish in the Northern Water Tribe. Two sides of the same coin, both entwined and moving in concert.
