Eric, I believe the arrow holsters that Mai uses are some form of Chinese Sleeve Arrow, which are real spring loaded dart firing mechanisms. I can only suppose her's are released by kinetic energy caused by making a particular movement with her arms or legs. Similar to how those cheap plastic lightsabers have blades that can lock when "deactivated" and only extend when you move them correctly.

It's not that they don't notice all tiny details, but that they loudly complain that somthing is "so stupid" and "makes no sense", when it's in fact not stupid and makes perfect sense. They could've said "That doesn't look right, I don't know how that works" or something instead just "ah so stupid". They only saw the character fight for like 2 minutes (so they didn't notice all details) and yet they loudly complained about how stupid it was. That's what bothered me most.

No Spoilers - if Calvin could check this comment and convey it to the others, I'd very much appreciate it. Somehow I feel like some of you take this too serious at times. Yes, ATLA has shown us much more worldbuilding and character development than the average series, but please don't forget that the original audience were supposed to be children. The deeper layers handle mature themes, yet everything is still packaged in something to be viewed by children. For example, Azula's introduction. At the end of season 1 the Fire Lord ordered her to find and capture Zuko and Iroh. Fire everywhere. Dark shadows. Cue Evil Smile. Who's the villain? Azula's the villain! (Hint: rewatch in episode The Storm, Zuko's Agni Kai and see if someone looks familiar.) The episodes after that showed how MUCH of a villain she would be: Azula is a perfectionist, how cool her lightning bending looked, it wasn't good enough for her because she desired the absolute perfect form, sorta obsessive. On the ship she would've transported her brother and uncle as prisoners without an inch of honor if it weren't for the slip-up of the (now probably dead ) captain. Azula didn't hesitate to manipulate and endanger her friend (?) Ty Lee to get what she wants. She didn't allow the brother of her other friend (Mai) to be traded into safety for the crazy king and her friend didn't protest. Now she's not only after Zuko and Iroh but also after the avatar. Just my piece of advice: don't try to find her redeeming qualities, but observe how villainous she can be and then BOW TO THE DANGER SHE REPRESENTS. For everyone, really. Also, I believe it's only fair that fire can be produced (by body warmth?) for firebenders, else it just would be too disadvantageous for them. They would be entirely dependent on their lighters or something like that and then we'd stray off the fight-bending epic scenes. Note: notice how much time and complicated gestures and concentration lightning takes. It would simply be impractical to use lightning on every occasion because once fired you can't STOP it (unless you're Iroh but he's an exception). Fire is quick and neat, you can control and somewhat manipulate fire even when fired. And I think it's safe to assume that creating lightning IS dangerous. Azula doesn't care much for the danger since she believes she can do anything but for the average firebender, yeah, no chance in hell. Note 2: As many below have said already, I feel like pointing it out, the appearances in the swamp were based on their inner psyche. Katara longs for her mother, Sokka travels with the guilt of not being able to save Yue, and Aang... is the Avatar so he's an exception, I guess. Last but not least, I really like you guys for your reactions and reacting to Avatar, it's been a while since I've thought about this series and I gotta say that now I get more meanings and themes and stuff than when I was younger, so thank you for reminding me about this series!
