His style of lightining matches both his firebending power and his ruthlessness. He won't even think twice about murdering his son. If Iroh is better than him brain-wise, Ozai is definitely more of a cold-blooded assassin, given his "immaculate" appearance and violent behaviour.

@xuvial1391 Жыл бұрын
It's amazingly deep and mature for a kid's show, but there are some small/minor plot holes because they couldn't show what would have realistically happened. Toph had Azula completely immobilized but they didn't even bother wounding her. By all accounts this was their one and only chance to severely cripple Azula, which would have saved them a LOT of trouble in the future. It was the ideal situation where they had had every reason to do it, but couldn't beause it's a kids show.
@nachofilament294 Жыл бұрын
"But it's a kids show," is an excuse I found valid against only two arguments - why isn't this more violent and why are children involved in/taking charge of this situation? Those are the kinds of questions that are like asking, "Why did everyone drop everything to start singing?" when watching a musical - the answer is because it's a musical, and that piece of unreality is necessary for it to be the thing it is. As such, "Why are Sokka and Aang leading a military invasion at their age?" is not a problem for ATLA in the same way that, "Why is Wesley Crusher on the bridge of a starship?" is a problem for TNG - one is meant to be kids show, the other is not. To me, "Why didn't character x execute character y?" types of issues fall under the same umbrella. The majority of plot holes of ATLA that stand out to me have more to do with the era the show came from - the "shows are episodic standalones and you write as you go," era, the era where shows from Happy Days to Seinfeld can change the number of siblings a main character has and it have no impact on the overall show. ATLA was one of the transition shows to the current "TV shows are long movies" method, and so it keeps introducing issues and conflicts that should have had an impact far sooner, which is far more noticeable in the third season. Which is an issue that I think could have been smoothed over had the creators been able to go over the entire series as a whole with a "second draft" pen.

Zuko speach is so powerful, especially when i watch this scene as an adult vs when i did as a kid. When i was a kid i thought it was just awesome. But as an adult i can SEE this this was a child who for the longest time was so abused and neglected by his father the only love he thought he was worth was conditional love. Even tho it was obvious to us that his father would never love him, zuko desperately clung to that belief because the alternative was too painful. What child should have to face the reality that their parent will never love them to no fault of their own. I love zukos speach because the way he says "my father" repeatedly like hes admonishing him for the piece of crap he is Because wat adult challanges a child to a death duel??? Something zuko spent the whole series ashamed of he can now see as an act of unimaginable cruelty, that NONE of this was his fault.

Zuko: “How could you possibly justify a duel with a child?” Confronting his father with the truth. Zuko confronting Ozai is probably my favorite scene in the whole series. Not just because i love to see someone who suffered horrible abuse confront their abuser, but also because we clearly see just how much Zuko has really changed since season one. Old Zuko likely would have tried to kill Ozai. At the very least, he wouldn't have been able to completely ignore every single barb from Ozai meant to get a rise out of him. Nope. Zuko doesnt play that anymore. He's a better son than Ozai deserved, and its SO SATISFYING to finally see that Zuko understands that. That all of the suffering his father put him through was never because he did anything wrong. He finally understands that he was never the one who was wrong. And he's finally unashamed and confident enough to stand up and let it show.

I remember the first major popular media to criticize the invasion of Iraq was the Civil War storyline in Marvel comics. There was an episode of The Daily Show in which Jon Stewart explained the plot of Civil War and explained how it metaphorically criticized the Bush administration for sacrificing our freedoms in the name of brutalizing people who didn't attack us. It's important to remember that at the time, everyone else in popular media was playing cheerleaders to the Bush administration and the wars. Even the Dark Knight Batman movie is a metaphor that praises George Bush II as a noble hero defending us from madmen. At the time Civil War came out, Marvel were the only ones criticizing the Bush II administration, the PATRIOT act, etc. So after explaining the story of the Civil War comic books, Jon Stewart looked directly into the camera and said "America, why are we having this conversation in a comic book?"

Ozai's show of power give me chills every time. Other firebenders don't even feel the eclipse (i.e. the "we'll never surrender" scene), meanwhile he: 1. Is so in tune with the sun, he feels it the moment it is unveiled. 2. Generates lightning orders of magnitude faster than anyone we've ever seen. 3. Generates lightning with both hands and combines them into one, also something we've never seen before. Azula might be feeling the sun as well, although I'm pretty sure she just heard the ruckus at Ozai's and deduced that the sun is back, since she said "sounds like". On a completely different note - what in the world is the point of the "eclipse glasses"? I get that you would need them to look at the sun, but why on Earth would you be enjoying the sight of the eclipse during an invasion? Shouldn't your attention be focused on the ground, where the glasses are detrimental to vision?
@funnylilgalreacts Жыл бұрын
Probably because time was precious and they’d probably keep looking at the eclipse to watch the time? That’s my best guess.
@darrensmith6408 Жыл бұрын
Remember this is also a kid show. Probably a studio add to remind kids to not look at an eclipse. Liability sort of thing. The way shows that include mixing explosives and other dangerous things leave certain steps out.

A crazy revelation I've had is that when Zuko was on the hill top, wanted to get struck by lightning so he could 'give it back' that the scene where he redirects Ozai's lightning is him saying No to the abuse and emotionally pain that his father has thrown at him from when he was young.
@pawea1347 Жыл бұрын
A little bit late, and I'm gonna repeat some comments, but I really like Zuko's speach to hid dad. All his anger, suffering, humiliation was accumulated in this speach. And his arc to this moment of the series is phenomenal. My all favourite character of this series.

It took two and a half seasons, but Zuko finally gets the heroic, redemptive moment that we were all hoping he would. The first time I watched this, I was so psyched when he redirected that lightning bolt back at Ozai...literally throwing his uncle's lessons straight into his awful father's smug, stupid face 😁

Zuko stands up to his abuser, and when his abuser tries to hurt him again he turns it back on him. For those who grew up with an abusive parent, this scene is powerful.
@xandersorrows7341 Жыл бұрын
What warms my heart about it is that Zuko is basically saying 'I will not let you hurt me anymore, but neither will I stoop to your level', indicating that not only is he confronting his abuser, but also breaking the cycle of abused -> abuser. Life said 'hurt people hurt people' and Zuko straight up said no thanks

47:49 Aang was from the Southern Air Temple, which fits with how its the first they visited after the South pole. The Mechanist was at the Norther Air Temple, which they got to as they got closer to the North Pole. Then the Guru was at the Eastern Air Temple, the closest one to Ba Sing Se. And now we're going to the Western one, the one next to the Fire nation. From what I understand, the Air nomads travel between all the temples pretty regularly, like even though he's from the Southern Temple, we see a flashback during the Appa's Lost Days episode of Aang getting Appa at the Eastern Temple.

hi, Angela! I'm not sure if it's been addressed already but: • Aang is from the Southern Air Temple - this is the first Temple they visited (title episode of S01E03) as it is the closest to the Southern Water Tribe, where the show took place in the beginning, and Katara and Sokka's hometown - we know this is Aang's home because in that episode is where he found Monk Gyatso's skeleton and went into the Avatar State - Aang also mentions "I haven't seen my room in a hundred years!" • Northern Air Temple - we know this is the next one they visited in Season 1 (Ep. 17) since we are close to the finale AND their destination, the Northern Water Tribe (both North part of the world) • Eastern Air Temple - Guru Pathik mentioned the name of the temple in "Appa's Lost Days" - even if it wasn't mentioned, the Earth Kingdom is located in the East (from the Four Nations map), so obviously the closest temple would be from the East - this is the most spiritual of all the Air Temples, hence why Aang needed to train to control his chakra there • Western Air Temple - well, they needed a place to recuperate after the Invasion, so Aang offered the nearest Temple available, the Western Air Temple - in the Four Nations map, the Fire Naition is located in the West, so it would make sense why Aang picked the W. Air Temple as their hiding place for a while

Iroh is what many people should aspire to be in my opinion, Peaceful. Now I said peaceful, not harmless, he's very powerful and capable of violence if necessary. But he *chooses* to be kind and easy-going; not because he can't fight, but because he knows when it's better to show restraint. There is not much merit in being "peaceful" if you're not a threat to anyone, but when you are and you choose peace instead... I think that is what shows true strength. He's probably my favorite character in this show.

It is so funny to me that the main crew seems to consistently forget about Toph's blindness while they're waving posters and books in her face all the time like they expect her to read it, but Azula picks up on it immediately and provides Toph with an auditory description of what she's doing. Like say what you want about our favorite cruel, evil girlboss princess, but at least she's accessible in her sarcasm lmao.

I think Zuko understands more than he realises with the line about it being the Avatar's destiny to defeat Ozai - it's not enough for a Fire Prince to take out the Fire Lord, even if he tries to turn the Fire Nation to good after - the Fire Nation has to *lose* before the world can start to heal, and that can't happen from within.
@Sheriff6170 Жыл бұрын
You totally mixed up the air temples. Aang is from the southern air temple, the mechanist is at the northern air temple, and Appa is from the eastern air temple (where the guru is). A good way to remember is that they are close to where the team Avatar is at the time: 1. The southern air temple episode is right after they leave the southern water tribe. 2. The northern air temple episode is right before they reach the northern water tribe. 3. The eastern air temple is close to Ba Sing Se, which is on the northeastern side of the earth kingdom. 4. The western air temple is close to the fire nation. It might feel sometimes like with Appa they can almost teleport around, but in reality the gaangs location moves quite steadily with each episode.

Aang is from the Southern Air Temple, that's why he ended up in the south pole on an iceberg, the Northern Air Temple is where the inventor and his kid was, on the way to the Northern Water Tribe, and the Eastern Air Temple is the one where the Guru was. The Western Air Temple is the new one we're gonna visit next episode.

Tbh I love that the writers made zuko innitially betray Iroh. It shows that he's still young and a child and needs guidance and time to learn. And when he had what he thought he wanted, he learned he made a mistake. And he felt remorse for his mistake. And that led us into a fantastic redemption speech that's worthy of Zuko's character and his journey.
