Wanna cry again? In “the tale of Aang,” the kid who said “Fluffykins, what are you doing here?” was a Make-a-wish kid with cancer. She initially just wanted to go to the studio and meet the cast/crew, but the creators wrote that part in for her and designed the character after her.

Damn so Sokka’s tale is the only one that’s not emotional? Toph gets bullied for her looks, Iroh morns his son, Zuko struggles with the idea of someone actually liking him, Momo misses Appa, and now Aangs segment has her?

So, in case anyone else didn’t chime in to bring up details for Iroh: 1. The portrait of Lu Ten was based on a picture of young Mako. 2. Little Soldier Boy was one of(if not) _the_ last things Mako recorded. 3. Greg Baldwin, who was Mako’s understudy and would take over voicing character such as Iroh & Aku(from Samurai Jack), refuses to sing the song. He considers it Mako’s and Mako’s alone. 4. Now y’all know what Merphy was talking about when she warned y’all about old people in ATLA destroying your emotions.

You missed some. The text of the picture is actually readable. It says "General, we will meet again when we win the war, Lu Ten." Mako in his youth was in the military, so the song doesn't stay far from his reality. This one I'm not sure, but I heard he actually recorded his last scene of the show while laying on his dead bed. They went to visit him with the recording equipment and asked him if he could do one last recording and he gladly did so.

Fact time! (Aside from the big Mako one) - Tales of Ba Sing Se was a writing contest hosted within the studio, where the best concepts were picked for full production - The little girl in pink from Aang’s tale (with the cat) is a Make a Wish Kid! She both got to be put in the show and got to voice her own character. Her wish was just to visit their Orlando studio, but one of the crew offered to put her in. She has since made a full recovery! - This is the last we see the Cabbage Merchant as well as the last of his woes, given his success in Korra - Mako’s successor Greg Baldwin still voice acts today and continues to honor Mako’s memory every year. Another popular role of his is Aku from Samurai Jack! - (Edit:) Appa Lost Days won a Humane Society Genesis award for it’s depiction and representation of animal cruelty in many circuses today

I love the tale of Toph and Katara. I'm a girl but I don't often do too much girly stuff. I remember on my 17th birthday a friend of mine wanted to do my make up and give me a little make over. It didn't really suit me but my god it was fun. I don't want to care about my appearance, I don't want to feel like I have to. But a part of me still likes to think I'm pretty, and I still am girl. I really relate to Toph in that episode and Katara is such a great friend for helping her explore that side of herself

In Iroh's song, the picture of his son is apparently the voice actors old appearence irl. The voice actor at the time was suffering of cancer and was going to pass away soon. Thats why they put "In honor of Mako" at the end to show their appreciation for him. Leaves from the Vine was his last song before completing his work forever

I haven't seen a lot of people miss this context as well, Iroh's son died in the seige of Ba Sing Se, which is why Iroh gave up his 600 day seige. So he is very possibly visiting the spot where he died, or near to it. His son's death also kicked off his visit to the spirit world and his entire world view on the war being shifted. Which is why his younger brother was named firelord instead of him. It also kicked off him parenting Zuko, as he didn't want Zuko to become a peg in the machine like his son was. This is why the line of "if only I could have helped you like I helped them.' hits so hard, because his actions and lack of help like he gave those in his story, led to his sons death.
@AngellusRavenix

The writer's knew that for those emotional gut punches, you need to build hope for them to land harder. Appa's Lost Days is one of those "I hope he gets home" episodes that you know, when it starts to look up, it always seems to be looking up too much. And when the Dai Li are watching him and Long Feng lures him to the alley Momo found his footprint, I was about to riot my first watch. But the Tales of Iroh, Zuko and Momo are my favorite from Ba Sing Se.

If I'm not mistaken, this was one of the last lines Mako ever recorded as a VA. And the emotion you can hear in his voice, which is so fitting for the story of Iroh's son, comes from Mako knowing it would be one of the last lines he ever recorded. This scene always made me cry in the context of the show... but this extra info just really drives it home.

Ahhhh yes these 2 episodes. The first one is a beloved episode cause of Iroh and all the stories. I heard that the song Iroh sung was one of the last things the OG voice actor recorded, to the crying is real cause he knew he was dying. That may be rumor though, but it is true he was soon to pass from disease. The VA who took his place refuses to sing his song till this day cause its "Mako's song". The last episode you watched is painful but we all wanted to know what happened to Appa. It also makes the part in a previous episode where that dude said something along the lines of "Be so sad if you were unable to find your bison" that much more evil. It pretty much says he knew all along.

You might consider it 'giving up' and that may be accurate. But it's the initial learning phase I like the most. It's a quantity over quality thing. Not that the quality of those skills is bad, just basic. Like solving, and doing patterns with a rubik's cube, card throwing, cardistry, flower sticks, lock picking, begleri, weaving chainmail, pancake art, cake decorating, sand bottle art, and quite a few other things.

It's more Zuko being a clam jammer than blue ballsing himself. Also even if people did see him firebend so what. "There is no war in Ba Sing Se" even if anyone saw him no one is going to speak up or they get the Jet treatment.

Interesting fact about Appa’s lost days, it won a genesis award from the Humane Society for showing the abuse animals face in circuses.

The writers of avatar really said “hey. We’re gonna have you watch as a child is forced to pick between saving her friends and saving the beloved pet/companion, and then not resolve that storyline for weeks. And after 5 episodes, we’re gonna have an episode dedicated to how miserable and abused Appa was. Sound fun?”

When Katara waves away the catty girls in the first short I hear in my head the immortal words from Robocop, "Bitches leave!!" I've watched this episode many times and I never noticed Momo knows how to tie knots. I'm sure Aang has been using the whistle all around town. And, the Dai Li have been spying on the Aang Gang from day one. Zuko cock-blocked himself.

Appa's Lost day episode, actually won the show an award of how perfect they depict animal cruelty in circus's and similar events. Also "Who are those guys on the roof?" Dai li agents. They were explained in the previous episode.... the same episode you were talking over about mayo... this is why you simply can't talk over the show, there's reasons for things to appear or occur on screen. Foreshadows, meanings from previous episodes or future ones. Like Appa's foot print in MoMo's mini story, or the same couple with the baby that was with Aang during the Serpents Pass, that Iroh and Zuko run into on the train to Ba Sing Se.

The sads part of Iroh and Zukos tale is that they're on the run and trying to leave their past lives behind. I'm pretty sure no one in that village or that girl would be so close and friendly towards them if they knew that they use to be the enemy! 🔥

I think the moment that really hits me hard is when Appa was dreaming of when he met Aang, then Aang woke up from the same dream. They're energies are mixed like the Guru said, deeply so. Cause not only is a sky bison an airbenders companion for life, but Appa is also Aangs avatar animal guide like stated in book 1 ep 7. To say that they are spiritually linked is an understatement, and that moment where they were having the same dream at the same time really shows that and there's something incredibly moving and beautiful about that.

The fire nation abandoning the drill is actually a logistically smart move. They know war well, and when you think of the invention of the thing, given it's size, its their most advanced tech thus far. Idk if you guys heard earlier, But suki actually foreshadowed the drill while on the serpent's pass she says something along the lines of "The fire nation controls the west side of the lake and word is, they're building something big over there and they don't want anyone to find out." Remember, Suki is involved in the war so she probably has good intel. The drill was a massive gambit since the ONLY other time the wall was ever breached, was when they had a tactical genius like Iroh manning the operation, which immediately broke down when he left before the full siege was underway. The drill was a risk and now that they know how to destroy it, there's no fucking way they're gunna try something like that again. So, before the full brunt of the earth kingdom forces surround them, the fire nation abandons the thing and regroup. I feel like if they were given as much episodes as they wanted to get fully into the depth of all the implications, it would have been good to spend some time hyping up how much of a move this was for the fire nation. If our guys hadn't shown up, this would have ABSOLUTELY been way more terrible. Plus, the fact that Royalty was along for the ride HEAVILY implies the Fire Lord was very interested in ensuring this worked out.

Dont get wrong pushing the wall need extremely strong earthbenders. Bending something that super big massive size take heavy for the bender. U can clearly see from Aang fighting King Bumi that when Bumi carrying the whole entry against Aang, it get heavy. One man can't open the Wall of Ba Sing Se alone. Except if u full fletch Avatar.
