You asked why pulling water from thin air wasn't common. The answer is actually simple, because most water benders live in environments that are abundant in water. The three main tribes are the Northern, Southern and Foggy Swamp. All three live in environments where water is abundant. Pulling water out of the air, which is basically just concentrating the natural humidity, isn't really something most water benders would need to think of. So the technique isn't common.

Also, there's sone separation between being a skilled bender and a creative one. There's a lot of arguments to be made for Hama's skill cap being relatively low, but I'll be damned if she isn't creative.

Also, it probably depends on humidity. It makes sense Hama could easily do it on a tropical, volcanic island that is probably 50%+ always. When Aang tried to collect water from a desert cloud, there was hardly anything.

@bradstrife2211 I don't know that Hama's skill cap was necessarily low, per say. Of all the fighting water benders of the southern tribe, she managed to stay in the fight until she was literally the last one. I think it's more like by the time she was facing Katara, she was long past her prime, and at that point just couldn't compete with a far younger, powerful waterbender. My guess is that younger Hama, who likely had more dedicated training and combat experience than Katara at that point, would have been far more evenly matched. Though that's also keeping in mind that I don't think Katara was necessarily at the prime of her life during the events of the show. So Katara vs. Hama, both in their prime, I think I'd still give the win to Katara. Though that's harder to determine as we didn't exactly see in the animation exactly how powerful each was at the prime of their lives.

@nea7293 Yeah, that's why I specified that pulling water from the air was concentrating the natural humidity. One thing I love about ATLA is that even though it's effectively a magical world, the "magic" still generally makes sense with physics, for the most part. That being that they can't generally just create the element out of nothing. They require a source. Except with fire bending. Not sure if there's a "scientific" explanation for it, but it seems like the only one that violates that general rule.

That moment when Katara stops the water wave, was actually an Earth bending move, standing firm,and stopping the attack.

The difference between Katara's and Hama's world views is also evident in their bending styles. Katara has been all over the world, working with the Avatar and with Toph. When she blocks Hama's attack at 40:23 that's basically an earthbender move. Similar to how Iroh is inspired by the other bending techniques, this is what makes Katara more powerful than Hama, who, despite having an open mind about where to find water has a rigid view set by her trauma

I would imagine that a skilled blood bender could make a good doctor, clearing up blood clots and keeping patients from bleeding out, maybe aid the blood flow in the body.

I thinking bending requires an appropriate temperament. Does blood bending REQUIRE anger and hate or is it just that blood benders tend be hate filled individuals? Can a hate filled person do complex healing?

ATLA is my favorite animated show of all time...and probably my second favorite show of all time. I watch a lot of reactions of people watching the show for the first time. And I must say, Rich, that you are by far my favorite reactor.

I like that you're acknowledging Hama's trauma. She had to escape, and her initial use of bloodbending is arguably justifiable. Sadly, she chose a path of revenge, which is understandable but not acceptable. And I like that you sympathize with Katara being forced to learn bloodbending. Far too often, people underestimate how awful bloodbending really is, especially for someone as kind as Katara.

​@RickiiTensee Thank you! You hit the nail right on the damn head. The problem with blood bending isn't the actual act it's the concept and mindset behind it that's the issue. For someone who's as sweet and kind as Katara literally reaching inside someone and bending them to her will with no real way to fight...I saw someone in another reaction say it best, it ain't rape, but it's damn near close. Katara broke down because of the betrayal of her trust from what in her perspective is an honored elder and in their culture elders are usually highly respected and looked up to. Katara is afraid of becoming exactly like Hama. Is the ability useful in the right circumstances? Absolutely. But just because you can do something doesn't mean that you should. Plus there's plenty of shows and series that have shown whenever someone has the power to control someone else by force they tend to go down a dark path cause as the saying goes power corrupts. And ultimately there are always going to be someone lines that should never be crossed even if it's for a good or right reason.

Other waterbenders aren’t using the techniques Hama is showing because waterbenders literally live around water and ice, they don’t need to think about things like this, they are limited by the environment they are used to, as opposed to Hama who lives in a southern and dry climate where water isn’t always around. She had to come up with those things, discover them out of necessity.

Why water Benders don't pull water from the air has 2 reasons. 1 they are often not in a position of little to no water from other sources. 2 density, if you look at hamas movement it takes a lot of Movements and time to pull water from the air not to mention that the total amount compaired from other sources.. like plants is often greater than the air. Another detail to take note of during the episode of hama is that katara uses an earth bending technique during their fight which surprises hama.

judjing by the pacing of the episodes in Book 3, it would be best if you released episodes 9-11 simultaneously. They all connect to the same theme and story development, and later you can simply stcik to 2 episodes per upload. You know what, if you really think about it, bloodbending is actually gonna do wonders in the field of medicine! Say good bye to blood loss, to blood clot, to hemorrhage, to literally anything painful that involves blood. Not only that, we can also kiss MRI and CT Scan goodbye too, since bloodbending can be used to diagnose a disease and it's cause much much more accurate and effectively than those scans. Bloodbending is a game changer and a tremendous blessing for medical field if it does exists in our real world!

I actually read a fanfiction where bloodbending was used for good. It was a Korra fanfiction so I won’t give too much away, but bloodbending was used to resolve a blood clot (not something that happened in the show.)

So many folks don't see the significance of 40:12 . Katara is able to throw off bloodbending. In the entire Avatar universe, we know of only two others who have been able to do that. Katara is one of the greatest waterbenders ever to have lived.

There's no real reason for most waterbenders to ever make water from the air. The only waterbenders we've seen have been in the North/South Poles and the Swamp. It's easier/more efficient to take water from the ice or water next to you than create it from air, considering Hama was only able to make a small amount.

They aren't that many good disabled characters on television, a lot of it is essentially people making fun of disabled people not accurately betraying us and it can often be very insulting and very difficult for real blind or visually impaired people as well as other disabled people to try and have their voices heard when They betrayed so inaccurately on screen, however something I really like about Toph, even though a lot of it isn't accurate, is that they forget she's blind and the reason I like that about her character, is because as someone who is visually impaired, knowing that disabled people and especially blind and visually impaired people are so misrepresented on television and in media, the fact that the gang forget she's blind, is a great way of showing how it works in the real world, people who are blind or visually impaired or just disabled in general want others who aren't disabled to think of us as just normal people we have the same interests, we enjoy the same things we live life pretty similarly, despite the struggles we may face, so it's nice to see her just being herself and then forgetting shows that they just think of her as the same as the rest of them which is really nice to see as a lot of other shows and other media, when someone is disabled especially blind or visually impaired often that becomes their whole personality and it's all people can talk about, forgetting that there's a person underneath whereas with avatar they do a great job at showing someone who is blind but she's so much more than that and we actually get to see her being more than that to the point where you actually forget she's blind and that I think makes the point that disabled people are people too and it's a great way of showing it, which is why she's always been one of my favourite disabled characters growing up.
