Honestly I’ve seen the “girls can fight too” message so many times that I don’t really mind the change. We still got Sokka being humbled and they actually fleshed out Suki’s character a bit more in this version. Also, the scene where Kyoshi takes over is just freaking awesome.

@@AL-fl4jk I've finished the season since posting the above comment and well... I think they handled the next "girls can fight too" part of the show better in the cartoon. It's a shame, because it could've been an interesting angle to go in if they only made a small change to it. Just a slight tweak in dialogue and it could've worked.
@JCrushFitness10 ай бұрын
To me this came off as her simping for a guy she met like 30 minutes ago. They needed to start with the rivalry where Sokka doesn’t think she can beat him but then come back for training after being humbled. When she approaches him while he’s training it takes away the realness of the relationship to me and makes it feel forced

@@dragonsword8129are you talking about the North Pole? Because I think that was was handled way better, lol
@dragonsword812910 ай бұрын
@@JCrushFitness My problem with it has to do with its resolution. Remember Zuko's "you found a master, didn't you?" line? Katara's response felt a little too much like an obligatory "girl boss" moment. I know they showed her learning throughout the season, and I agree that she's pretty much a prodigy. But I don't agree with the idea that she's already a master. It would have been better if they emphasized that "If she's this good now, imagine what she'll be like as a master." If they had even had Pakku offer to teach her some techniques that she doesn't know at the end, it could've worked. Sorry. But I just think the cartoon did it better by having Katara learn from an actual master before being called one herself. I liked how this version had all the women join in during the battle. That part was an interesting change. But as soon as people called Katara a master, and then her agreeing with it, they fumbled for me.

I feel this adaptation is more aligned with the theme. We tend to forget that this is a war story… about a child who lost his childhood and got inserted in the middle of war and with the responsibility of saving the world…. There were aspects of this theme that the cartoon could not dare to explore because of the audience it was aimed for.

Kyoshi DOES appear like that in the cartoon actually, it's just in another context, the Chin the conqueror episode, where Aang has to defend himself from being accused of killing him in a past life (as Kyoshi), he dresses as her hoping she will appear to defend him, and she does appear eventually, but only to say that even if she wasn't directly responsible for his death it wouldn't make any difference as she would kill him if she thought it was needed. Basically being the no chills giving absolute badass mother we've also seen in this episode.

I must say as someone who binged the whole series in one night, Gyatso and Suki had very impactful parts in the story for being minor characters. Needless to say I'm very hopeful.

The Kiyoshi is inspired by Japanese but the martial arts of Kiyoshi Warrior is inspired by Indonesian Penchak Silat, they do have fan combat in Silat. on the matter of sexism - someone of the production teams said that Northern Water Tribe will still have their sexist views and Master Paku will be like he was - so the show will still address the sexism, just not so much in Sokka - and really, Sokka in the original went from sexist to non-sexist happened in 2 and a half episodes - so it was a fast arc. I think on the issue of the water scroll there was always this thing in the animation where Katara had a lot of basic skills from the start that made it a bit odd that she needed the scroll because she was advanced enough that she should have been able to advance on her own just with practice ... that said, it was easy to ignore and just get into the animation. Here they started her much less able, she needed a few more basics to open her up and the scroll was a big part of it - it just makes more sense [I'm speaking as a martial artist who has trained in a style of Kung Fu since 1970 ] and also, it makes no sense that there were no bending scrolls in the Southern Water Tribe - there would have been scrolls back when they had a lot of benders. So this way just makes more real world sense whereas the other way works fine in a cartoon/animated world. [personally, I'd class Avatar as anime even though many feel it has to be done in Japan to be anime]

When you were talking about how it would be funny to have Sokka be kinda bullied and humiliated by Suki , I had this epiphany why it wouldn’t be good in this live action adaptation. 1. It’s no secret that many people are just done with the “girl power” moment. This series wouldn’t need the drama it would generate. 2. The show NEEDS a GOOD prominent male character who is not a bender. What I mean by Good is not the trait itself, rather, i was talking about how having Sokka like this grounds the character and makes him more “appealing” 3. The pace of this series up to this point does not have room for a sexist sokka. Do you think its believable to change a mindset that fast? Sokka in this adaptation is very realistic, reserved and somewhat pessimistic, but always rooted in logic/rationale
@Jehphg10 ай бұрын
pretty much agree, however I want to add, that Sokka STILL is sexist in this, and he will keep being for most of the show too, it's not even toned down, just done in a more subtle/mature way, which I think makes sense because although the show is obviously PG-13, the audience is being made for obviously schews more mature than that, and with that, is expected to have both more media literacy, and emotional maturity to realize he doesn't need to be a charicature of a sexist man child to still be sexist and grow throughout the show, case in point, his obssession with traditional gender roles is still there, Katara will end up being much more of an *obvious* warrior than he is (not that he isn't one), and yet he will learn to both respect that, respect her agency and also question his need to fit that gendered role (which mix with the parental expectations as well). Honestly it's just the same thing in the cartoon, but presented in a more mature way, respecting us more for it. I'm really happy they went that route
@hematite991410 ай бұрын
I think removing the struggle from Sokka and Kitara's characters does a disservice to them, both of them are rough around the edges with character flaws to overcome, but getting Suki being INCREDIBLY awkward was delightful, I'm still waiting for Kitara's character to either show some struggle or for the show to give me something to make up for it's absence. This was another great episode for me. I like that I haven't seen the animated show yet because I'm able to enjoy what they are giving us. Most of the stuff that was mentioned that was left out or done differently I'm either okay that it's not in this or I would've disliked it in the show. I like Sokka trying to seem impressive to her and her weird flirting with him. I thought it was funny how he got his ego hurt when he got put in a headlock. That wouldn't have bothered me because I'd immediately understand that Suki was most likely more skilled than me and would've just play it cool with her and showed interest in her by learning more about her. I'd want to see if she's willing to teach me what she's good at as a way of bonding. Show her that I want a partner that we can be on equal footing with each other by learning about what makes us special. I think it wouldn't be right to take Sokka's sexist behavior out and then have Suki doing the same type of stuff. That would've made me not like her character and I love the way they are in this version. I really wish Suki had joined them on the journey like building a badass group of Benders and Fighters to have Aang's back. When Avatar Kyoshi started whipping the Fire Nation troops butts I burst out laughing when the Commander all of a sudden was like "Screw this mess we out." 🤣 I don't know anything about Momo and Appa or how important their characters are so I need to see more with them to have any feelings other than they're really cute and loveable. So far I've been worried that they may be trying to strip away too flaws that made the growth of these characters so satisfying. Sokkas sexism, Kataras jealousy of aang initially, even zuko being in the background at kyoshi island, and not really being the central one attacking. If these characters are, for lack of a better word 'perfect' (zuko being the more obvious exception,) they will never grow and being as interesting/compelling characters as the original. All this being said, I am still enjoying the show. I don't want carbon copies of the OG, but so far the only "problems" the characters are seeming to deal with are related to the war, and none of the other real problems of coming of age and being a better person that ATLA taught so many of us as kids how to deal with.

If the movie was a 0 and the original was a 10 then this live action is at LEAST a 7.5 if not an 8.

The changes here vs the cartoon... what... and just let Loki and Spiderman have all the fun in multiverses? I think all these changes and references are fine, especially with the limited episodes they have to work with. They have to get a lot of characters and references in 8 episodes... and it's quite entertaining! :-)
