Part of me hopes Lieutenant Jee is still alive. In the original show, he and the rest of Zuko's crew join Zhao for the siege of the North but then they're never seen or mentioned again. But here, Iroh not just mentions Lieutenant Jee but suggests he and the others might be alive. Maybe we'll see him again in season 2 or 3. Heck, they could make it so Jee and the others form a force of Fire Nation deserters (which could allow them to bring in Jeong Jeong) and later on Jee and this deserter army could launch a revolt in the Fire Nation in the final season. We've already seen that there is descent among the Fire Nation's people so it's not completely unlikely. None of this is probably going to happen but it's fun to speculate.

I also would like that Lt. Jee get involved!!! I personally would love if they guide Zuko and Iroh to Ba Sing Se as part of the White Lotus during the desert arc. Still exiled, but still loyal to Zuko. It also gives us a reason to introduce and trust the organization. Otherwise I thought they would either help the escape during the Boiling Rock, or either help Zuko or Iroh during the invasion. And of course if not, would be nice to see them at his coronation!!!

Echoing the feeling chamber. It wasn't perfect but it was at minimum "one of the good ones". It changed and cut some things, but it respected it's source material even if it reimagined some interactions. I felt the new dynamic between Zuko, Iroh and his crew was the highlight of the show. This show is not better than the original, and if thats not what we're going for we shouldn't even be trying. Everything that made the original great and have impact is distinctly LACKING in this show. I'm not saying its bad, but for a show I love this much to fail so hard on the storytelling elements, just sucks. They constantly do "tell, don't show" so much it gives very distinct Shamalan vibes.. Ever since I heard the original show creators parted ways with this recreation I was disappointed, but still hopeful. This first season knocked the wind straight out of my sails. I know people might come after me for my opinion here, but I'll stand firm. No one is gonna come back and watch this show in 5 years, 10 years, 20 years from now.. Some of my family avoided the animated series because they thought "animated = for kids", but then they watched the live action, fell in love with the story and the world of Avatar, and are now making their way through the animated as we speak.

I firmly believe that this shows biggest problem is that its tells more than it shows. The writers need to trust their audience and stop over explaining what's happening. The cast is talented, and the writers clearly know the source material, arguably too well (referencing things from the comics). There are some writing decision's that I actually like better in this version than in the animation. That being said, I do think there were some small directorial issues, such as poor acting takes that could have been reshot, or oddly staged shots, but those can improve as well. I think people are wrong to write this show off so early. It was never going to be a copy of the animation. It's crafting its own identity, which is a good thing.

Well, you’d be surprised to see people especially on twitter came up with weird takes despite the show being too telling. This applies for the OG show as well. I think expositions are necessary for this fanbase lmao But yes i hope they tone it down, the difference between ep 1 & 2 are a lot when it comes to expositions. Now that the base world building is explained i hope s2&3 script wont be too telling like s1.

I agree with your analysis. The live-action in some aspects overexplains things that never were in the animation. The original in many ways entrusted more to the imagination and wit of an audience that primarily existed of childeren! Another flaw (in my eyes) is the heavy focus on action. They more from one CGI and action packed to another. One of the strengths of the animation is the world building and strong dialogue. For example, the ending of the first season has a totally oposite vibe in the live action and the animation. When the moon spirit appears, it's in the shape of an aquatic animal, a scene that has a legendary soundtrack. In the live action, they turned the moon spirit into a vengefully godzilla.
@Sokkawakkawakaa
@Sokkawakkawakaa 9 ай бұрын
@@saladspinner3200 the animation also overexplains things, and sometimesthey just tell us stuff and we are expected to accept it just because it's part of the plot. but i agree the teleplay in live action is too expository and sometimes repetitive (esp in ep 1, though it gets better later on). the key difference is in the animation it spans over 20 episodes so it has a room to breathe, but the LA only has 8 episodes which runs full stop 45~1 hr episodes each so it does get overwhelming sometimes. i think they need additional 1/2 episodes to land softly, unfortunately the current media episode count 'trend' is killing the narrative potential a seires has, not only netflix's avatar, but most shows too.

I gotta say, I prefer this story for Pakku than in the original. In the original he only let Katara learn to fight because he loved her grandmother. It really doesn’t feel like he’s actually changed and it’s a bit of a cop out. But here he stands by what he believes, and doesn’t change until in the middle of war, realising his entire Tribe could die unless he allows the women to help in the battle. I think it’s a way better way to go with the storyline.
@webx135
@webx135 9 ай бұрын
It was also somewhat more realistic in that he had them focus on fortifying and rebuilding walls. As much as they should have the women fight, they aren't exactly trained in combat. So it would be basically unethical to just throw them into combat. Have them do what they are currently best at NOW, and then train them in combat when things calm down. Despite my girlfriend's disappointment in an earlier scene, I would say them having one of the women bring up that "men fight and women heal" is more nuanced as well and tells a message some people need to hear. Gender roles like this aren't usually some direct top-down dictation ordered by one man, except in the most extreme cases like fundamentalist takeovers. It's usually a slower process shared by culture itself. If Katara were to hop in and say "How can you be content in being mere healers?!", the likely response wouldn't be "I hadn't thought of that." or "The men prevent us from doing so." It would more likely be "Ummm....what do you mean, MERE? They are the ones learning to hurt people. WE are the ones learning to HELP people." I feel like even progressive people tend to glorify the male roles, so we see these women as being restricted from the "superior" role. But I would be at least as concerned that the men are being trained to fight, but not taught to heal. Unless, of course, the men were taught both and women were only taught healing. Then yeah that has a clear direction.
@roaaoife8186
@roaaoife8186 9 ай бұрын
@webx135 my understanding from interviews and statements is that this view of gender roles is also more in line with the cultural beliefs of many Native/Indigenous American tribes. If you watched Echo this same view (Men are Life Takers, Women are Life Givers) is repeated there as part of Native Culture. If you pay attention you can really tell that many of the people involved in this are Native and Asian.
@claudegrenier3180
@claudegrenier3180 9 ай бұрын
Totally agree with you. Makes it more meaningful then just "Hey, since I loved your grangran, sure kiddo, let's teach you to fight....". AND this time around, it's not JUST for HERSELF... it's for all the women. As for the other replies about making more "realistic" sense because of "gender roles" is totally wacked. They're trying to squeeze their agenda into this. It makes no sense. If Katara were to hop in and say "How can you be content in being mere healers?!", some might answer "I hadn't thought of that." while others might answer "The men prevent us from doing so." and others might answer "Ummm....what do you mean, MERE? They are the ones learning to hurt people. WE are the ones learning to HELP people." having well learned their "obligations" . BUT in the end, whatever their answers MIGHT be, it certainly IS THE MENS fault for not even CONSIDERING giving the women a chance, whatever beliefs you have about "gender roles". Who knows how many generations of women water benders would of LUVED the opportunity to learn to fight, but got turned down at the very mention of it.... Thinking otherwise is literally part of the problem lol

@@webx135 I think Pakku's wording was intentionally vague, so that it can be open to interpretation; ie "fortifying" and "see if the warriors need other assistance" can also be taken to mean using force. 24:34 - Lion Turtles were seeded throughout the entire original series and were one of the original inspirations for the show! “Lion turtles have great cultural importance in the Avatar world and are referenced several times throughout the franchise. General Fong and General Sung both had pauldrons representing the head of a lion turtle, as did one of Aang's battle "options".[17] A painting of a lion turtle was depicted in a scroll inside Wan Shi Tong's Library.[7] Aang and Sokka hid behind a lion turtle statue outside the Earth Kingdom Royal Palace while devising a plan to meet Earth King Kuei. Piandao compared Sokka's courage and heart to those of a lion turtle. Additionally, his manor boasted many lion turtle furnishings.[18] Admiral Chan's home in Ember Island had a lion turtle door knocker.[19] The gates of the Southern Water Tribe compound have a lion turtle motif.[20] A Satomobile used by the Triple Threat Triad sported a golden lion turtle as a hood ornament.[20] A lion turtle fountain stands next to the pool in Hiroshi Sato's estate.[21] A lion turtle appeared in the beginning of the unaired pilot as a statue behind Aang. The lion turtle who imparted Aang with energybending had forehead markings similar to those seen on fire lion turtles.[2] Some critics claim that the lion turtle teaching Aang energybending to defeat Ozai without killing him was a deus ex machina, a device used by writers to resolve a conflict through some form of divine intervention. The creators dispute this claim, insisting that the lion turtle's abilities were already developed prior to its introduction.[22] According to the creators, the idea of a mythic, prehistoric era when lion turtles roamed the world with cities on their backs and their role in the creation of the first Avatar started in 2003 when the test pilot was in development.[9] The creators drew inspiration for the lion turtle, in particular, while touring in Seoul to find the right animation studio to work on the test pilot. They recall seeing a turtle statue with an engraved monolith on its back, which stirred their childhood memories of Morla, the giant turtle in The Neverending Story, and the collective "World Turtle" myths they had encountered” - Avatat Fandom Wiki

It's why about halfway through that book, it suddenly races to the finish. I'm honestly hoping to see them do to the Earth Book what they did to the Water Book in this season. But then, I'm hoping they'll split out the Fire Book into what the showrunners of the cartoon had originally planned for the story. I’m a huge fan of the original. After the M. Night disaster, I came into this wary. I was glad they didn’t do a 1:1 adaptation and there are things you can pull off in animation that you can’t in live action. It was a pretty good depiction and some of the changes really worked. I wished Bumi was more like his animated counterpart and less serious. I also wish they hadn’t rushed through book 1. Since they were sticking to the typical Netflix 8-9 episode season, they could have done half of book 1 in the first 8 episodes, then finished it in a second “season”. Rushing through made it difficult to establish a lot of the connections the Aang gang made along the way. Other than that, I really enjoyed it.

I will definitely stand by the opinion that I think season one as an adaptation of book one from the cartoon is decent, but it certainly has a lot to better itself in. I think that season two and three need to have much better focuse on the story than mixing storylines together just for the sake of it. I also think some of the directing to actors needs to be improved and since Albert Kim is no longer showrunner it seems like they’re going to be changing up how the structure is going to be going through anyway. Not sure why people thought Lion Turtles came out of nowhere in the original. They were mentioned in two separate episodes prior to the finale. They were just never built up, so we knew they existed, just not much background.
@nathanielreik6617
@nathanielreik6617 9 ай бұрын
I mean yeah they were mentioned but so were 2 other animals we never did see in the show so I think people just heard it and didn't pay them too much attention as just another random animal combo mention (we never saw the hopping llamas or hog monkeys). It's not like they were given that much significance on their mentions. A couple drawings and statues that we only see for a short time and the single line "I saw a heart as strong as a lion turtle, and twice as big".

I think it was more the idea that the lion turtle conveniently appeared before the final battle giving Aang the exact knowledge he needed. Not that I’m bothered by it, but that’s how I heard it when others complained.

I don't know about that many extra, but I wouldn't be surprised if at least season 3 is a little longer if not season 2 as well. I feel like Book 1 of the original has so many side quests it is easier to cut or mention things in passing but the other 2 books have more drawn out and connected storylines that I feel they can't cut as much out.

I’ll have to try to rewatch this whole show another time, because man, I’m sad that I didn’t enjoy it like other fans. Found myself frustrated. There were elements that I liked, and I had fun with the action, and almost all the actors did a wonderful job, but the character writing/development was sloppy imo. Things were either too on the nose or not developed enough and it stinks because a “kids” show did it ten times better. Granted, the writing did feel like the show runners didn’t know if a 2nd and 3rd season would be green lit. But now that it has, I hope they can strengthen the pacing and characters even more.

@@jeannguyen3199 lol, I see what you did there. To be clear, Pakku and Gran-gran rekindling their romance doesn't bother me perse (although I would love to have seen how much groveling be had to do to win back a woman who literally went to the other side of the world in the middle of a war to get away from him) but rather how it was tied into Katara getting training from him. It just always felt like it undermined her accomplishment, and made it seem like a weird form of nepotism, especially with how the other NWT women were left out of the change in the original.

The fact they were "wasting time" saving an animal with humans dying all around them to me seems very silly. I love animals, but if I have a 10 year old kid dying and have to decide to tend to the child, or an animal, the humanity in me would still save the child without a second thought even if I would feel terrible for the animal.
