I literally just thought of something. I used to think it was kind of ridiculous that Zuko assumed that the avatar would have been alive for over 100 years, but there was a previous avatar who canonically lived to the age of 230, so it's not actually a huge leap in logic

IRL humans can live well past 100, avg avatar lifespan is 150, the one you're referencing was taught a special technique; they didn't live that long naturally...

One of the best TV shows ever produced IMO, in part because it's a closed arc (or series of arcs) whose end was clear to the creators from the beginning, though elaborations happened on the way. How it manages to embed child-like perspectives and humor within weighty themes and conflicts is quite astonishing. Not sure there is another show that comes close to managing that particular mix as well. The love and investment of everyone involved is evident from the character design, the story boarding, the art and animation, the music and sound design, the voice acting and direction, and the writing. For me it all makes rewatching it profoundly healing.

People are very, very much into this show-and the books. So in their excitement they will inadvertently reveal things that should not be revealed. The show answers most questions during the course of three seasons. Other things are revealed in the books(there are graphic novels and word only books). You don't need the books to understand the series at all. This was a kid's show on Nickelodeon, but it's not just a kid's show. Small kids will love the animations. But, even adults will love the depth of the story, it's themes, it's characters, and the issues it tackles. Give it a few episodes as it starts out like a lot of kid's shows but matures quickly. The writers had to keep it lighter since it was on Nickelodeon. But, then it gears up to very adult themes. My daughter loved it at 4 yo but only got maybe half of what was going on. At 13 she still watches it because the adult themes in it make sense now. No Spoilers: The Avatar world is composed of 4 nations: Fire Nation, Water Tribes, Earth Kingdoms, and Air Nomads. Within those groups some people can bend the elements. You can be connected to only one element and therefore you can only bend one element. Benders must train to use and control their element. People use martial arts to help with the focus involved with that elemental connection. Each type of bender uses a real life martial art style to control their element. The Avatar can control all elements and to a higher degree. And, the Avatar is supposed to maintain the balance between the four nations. Aang was frozen for 100 years ago and the world immediately went down the crapper. But, Aang is young and untrained in everything except air bending. Sokka is dedicated, brave, and smart. But, he has very little training. Katara is a water bender that has never seen another bender or any type. So, she can feel the connection but she has no idea how to use that effectively connection. So, she has taught herself the few techniques she can currently use. And, as you can see, her emotions can sometime get away from her with profound effects. Like water she changes to fit any vessel. When she tries to freeze people in front of her she freezes Sokka behind her. She turns around and does the exact same motion, and it works.

Thank you so much for the information and the tip! I'm looking forward to seeing how the story advances. My first watch through was definitely nostalgic and fun, but going back through while I was editing I was seeing some of the scenes in a different light. Especially the children. Definitely generational trauma, especially from Zuko that I was picking up. Also my brother is going to start moderating comments for me going forward, because I HATE spoilers!

its always great finding out that another cool person on youtube hasnt seen avatar yet. its definitely the best childrens series ive ever seen, so much so that it even feels stupid calling it a childrens series. but it is, at least in the beginning. kind of makes it even more impressive that its so good! a lot of times, producers of tv shows are basically saying "well its just for kids, it doesnt need to be good!" but this one is. im excited!

Sorry for repeating myself but as I first watched I felt so much nostalgia and happiness and then when editing and breaking down the scenes, I can see it may be getting darker. With regards to Aang's proficiency vs Fire Nation grunts, there are 3 main things to consider: 1) Aang is a very proficient airbender. Think about how much more control of air Aang displays already compared to Katara with water and even Zuko demonstrates with fire. You can also somewhat see this in the way Aang is animated to move in general; very light and fluid 2) the Airbenders have been absent for about a century at this point and believed extinct. This means that the Fire Nation army haven't fought an Airbender in all that time and are coming up against a combat style they've never personally witnessed before. Also underestimating a child 3) even though the Airbending is animated for the viewer, the characters wouldn't always be able to see the effects because air is invisible to us, so unless its disturbing its surroundings as the wind does, they wouldn't be able to identify it.

There is a question you don't have yet that isn't answered in the show but in the comics that pick up after the show ends. But we are a long way from that. It's the soul of the avatar that gets reincarnated into different bodies for each of the formations, I believe the cycle is water earth fire air and then it just keeps repeating over and over so the avatar before him was a fire bender and that was the last avatar that the world knows before Aang came along and he was born around the time that the other avatar died, if that makes sense. So different person just with the same soul, but they have their own own soul as well, think of it kind of like a person is born, they are their own whole person with their own soul, but then the avatar soul merges with their soul until they die and then the avatar soul seeks out another person emerges with them every time the avatar dies, that's the best way I can explain it, but the person gets reincarnated into each nation in the cycle, which like I said is water earth fire air.

@@catchingupkate Aang is also able to communicate with previous avatars,/other lives in special situations, either when he enters the spirit world, when he goes into the avatar state or on really special occasions previous avatars are actually able to take over the body of the current avatar (Asng) which is also really cool to see, we see a couple of times with the fire bender who came before him and then with the earth bender that came before him as well, but not until later in the show, it's very cool how they are able to do that as there are certain moments in time where he needs their help or he needs to talk to them, when he's able to access those previous lives and get their help or guidance, which I also think is really cool and really well handled, I believe that the reincarnation is based on monks and the way in which they test how someone becomes the avatar which is another episode that gets explained later, is also how people test to see the reincarnation of the Dalai Lama in Buddhism I believe, which also is very cool, as you see throughout the show many different cultures as well as many different fighting styles are used as inspiration for things like different types of bending or different cultures we see throughout the different nations as well.

Appa’s age is 6/106 Aang’s age is 12/112 Katara’s age is 14 Sokka’s age is 15, his name is pronounced Sah-Kah Zuko’s age is 16 Uncle Iroh’s age is 58-63 (age never given) The bending's are based on real world martial arts. The Bending List is in Avatar cycle order, A) Fire bending is based on Northern Shaolin. Fire Nation culture largely draws from Imperial Japan. B) Air bending is based on Circle motions of Baguazhang. Air Nomad culture is based on Tibet. C) Water bending is based on Tai Chi. The Water tribes are based on Inuit culture. D) Earth bending is based on the martial art of Hung Gar. The Earth Kingdom is largely based on Chinese culture, All info about Fire, Air, Water, and Earth culture comes from behind the scenes interviews on the originally released dvds. All music in this show is original, and was created for this show. The soundtrack is beautiful, incredible and perfectly suited to the show. The Arrow tattoo's on Aang's head, arms, legs, and back are the proof of fact markings, on his body, which directly indicate that he has reached and obtained / is the full rank of an Airbending Master. Appa's arrow is just Appa’s fur pattern. Most creatures in this world are made up of 2 or more animals from our world. Appa is a combination of both a bison and manatee. “…Power in fire-bending comes from the breath. Not the Muscles. The breath becomes energy in the body. The breath energy then extends past the limbs and becomes fire. …” [Uncle Iroh episode 1 Avatar the Last Airbender] Fire Benders create fire by igniting their own breath energy as it extends past their limbs. Focused breath energy enables the fire bender to control the created fire. Unfocused fire creation is dangerous, wild, and destructive. This is an American cartoon, which originally aired on Nickelodeon beginning in 2005, so approximately 19 years ago on February 22nd 2005. (Netflix launched the live action version on February 22nd 2024 in honor of its 19th year anniversary. which covers season 1 and some scenes from Season 2 Episode 2. I think they swapped Season 1 Ep 6, into season 2 of the live action, while moving season 2 Episode 2 into season 1 of the live action to keep the Omashu events together, and keep Season 2 of the Live action Earth-bending focused.) Avatar the last Airbender is not an anime. English is the original audio, and the creators are Americans. This show is NOT dubbed at all. Season 1 has 20 episodes originally aired in 2005-2006; Season 2 is also 20 episodes and aired from 2006-2007; Season 3 has 21 episodes and aired from 2007-2008. When watching on Netflix, all the multi-part episodes tend to be combined, so you will see a different episode count. The finale is 4 episodes (I.e. episodes 58-61; aka season 3 episodes 18-21)which all aired as a single 93 minute movie, in primetime, in 2008. It was a HUGE event on Nickelodeon. Still one of their highest watched airings ever! Nothing, is superlative in this show. The amount of tie ins, call backs, and fore shadowing, which occurs is astounding. Every time you watch this show, you the viewer, will see more connections, more fore shadowing and nuance. This show is amazing to the 9th degree, in that way. Enjoy the journey. No filler in this show. Only episode 11, the least liked episode of the series could possibly be considered filler, but even this episode gets a call back in episode 57 (I.e. Season 3 episode 17). Episode 11 is disliked because it was the episode, after its original airing, which aired whenever, and I mean whenever, there was no new episode for a given week. Fans all excited for a new Episode tune in and groan, grumble, grumble, it is episode 11, again, and again, and again, ad infinitum!!! It was as if Nickelodeon was playing a Groundhog Day movie joke on Avatar the Last Airbender Fans. Episode 11 is fine on first viewing, or on a full rewatch of the series. It is the most stand alone episode of the series, but the fact that it was ALWAYS the episode aired, when there was no new episode for a given week, caused fans to see it as the worst episode of the series, and dislike it because of how often it was aired and used by Nickelodeon. Part of the major excitement for Episode 12, was IT was episode 12! Finally!!! Also Episode 12 is one of the best episodes of season 1, and in the top 10, for me, of the whole show. I can not express how happy and blown away by Episode 12, all the fans were, when it finally, aired originally. Some of that was Hooray!, We finally are getting a new episode, continuing the story, and part was Episode 12 itself in its own amazing way. Enjoy the ride. This show is fantastic.

As far as Aang beating fire nation guys-they did point out that Aang can learn all Bending skills. Think of it maybe like someone who is skilled at one type of martial arts going up against an MMA/mixed martial arts fighter. You might recognize some techniques but your opponent could also pull out something very unexpected. And his age is also a factor. Could a child who took martial arts for years beat an adult with no or little training? Most adults would probably underestimate a kid.

Wait? You have never.......well it's one of those shows that marinades forever and you get to enjoy it forever. This may be a kids cartoon, but when you look closely the fire nation is the first among the four to industrialize, leading to a domineering naval force that can be sustained everywhere, which means it's high time to be expansionistic, and the rest is history, parallels, parallels, parallels. Aang was born when the world was at the precipice of an industrial revolution, and we know from the real world that those events tend to throw things out of balance a bit, he won't have as easy of a job as the previous avatars.

I'm not sure why it just missed me in childhood, my younger brothers were obsessed. The OST has been playing in my head all day, I can't wait to jump back in!

omg first one piece then my favorite childhood show and I also saw ATTACK ON TITAN which on gonna watch after these 😭 you are just farming my views and likes. This show is absolutely AMAZING. I loved it as a child and as an adult it hits so much harder! I found myself tearing up some of the lines in these first 2 episodes just because of what is to come 😭

😂 I swear it's not on purpose but also I feel like I'm being spoiled right now with all of these shows. I am writing and rewriting notes all day, which I LOVE! I love that I get both nostalgic, happy moments and then unexpected, uncontrollable tears in the same episode. Only in episode 3 😅

Im not sure anyone have mentioned it or if it pertains to you but if youre watching on Netflix, Netflix has put most 2parters into one episode therefore lowering the actual episode count and mislabeling some episodes. Ive found most watchers (myself included) prefers reactors to mark the numbers of the episodes according to the real episode number instead of Netflix's. Also keep an out for double episodes in general since some of them will not land evenly on your 2 episodes per video. I hope you enjoy the show as much as the fandom has!

Thank you, I appreciate that so much and I put that at the front of my notebook so I won't forget! I am enjoying it a lot so far, I'll probably end up watching quickly because I'm dying to listen to the OST on Spotify!

I see so many great fantasy books on those shelves, have you read anything from Brent Weeks? I recommend the original Night Angel Trilogy
@Mwuff77752 ай бұрын
Excellent fantasy, with excellent world building, it can be quite dark though.

I haven't yet, but he's an author I definitely want to get to. I've heard the Night Angel Trilogy is great. I'm okay with dark as long as it's well written! Thank you for the recommendation! 😄

Prefer quicker edits and to keep the discussion to 2-5 minutes at the end.
