One thing I love about this episode is how well they put you in both characters' shoes. Trying to understand what Aang had to go through, the responsibility, and the pressure of being the Avatar at too early an age, and Zuko, who relatively has about the same problems, all because he showed how much he cared about his people before had costed him greatly. It left both characters in a state of confusion and doubt, but having people who show equal care to reassure them helped them to clear their mind and guide them to what matters most.

This is 1 of my favourite episodes of season 1 as it not only shows both Aang and Zuko's backstories but the parallels between them, also this episode revealed to me that Zuko is still the same kid as before just more aggressive as in the 2nd episode when Aang surrendered to protect the water tribe Zuko honoured the agreement without scaring or harming anyone afterwards like many villains would, he kept his word showing he still is honourable and in this episode still loyal to those he believes deserve it that being his crew and his uncle Iroh

Firelord Ozai is voiced by Mark Hamill aka Luke Skywalker. Which is kinda funny when you think about the comparison to Star Wars. He has actually said that when he first read the scripts he thought Avatar would not succeed because it was too smart. He really liked all the support it got. Also the way they determined Aang was the Avatar is similar to how the real world Dalai Lama is determined. And the current Dalai Lama's last name is Gyatso. Katara to Aang: "You give people hope." Iroh: "The Avatar gives Zuko hope." Aang even helps some of his enemies.

@DevilSlayr3 ай бұрын
@@itsmylesfr do remember i said worst episode of the show, as in its in last place for most people if you were to rate all the episodes. As an episode of a show overall its fine I'd watch the divide a hundred times over before watching some of Korras bad episodes. But generally people's problems with the episode is mainly just how dumb the plot is, 2 clans hate each other because of cleanliness? Oh no actually its because of some myth about an orb that is of no actual substance to either clan. Oh and there's also the thoroughly ridiculous lie that Aang comes up with at the end that is not only cringe to listen too but also removes and real seriousness to the episode when the 2 clans just buy it for no reason. Oh and the moral of the episode maybe isn't the best thing to teach to kids, adults? Sure but not kids. Again it's just a bad episode of Atla not a bad episode in all of television.
@itsmylesfr3 ай бұрын
@DevilSlayr 2 groups of people hating each other from stories from a long time ago is unfortunately not unrealistic. People have fought over even less. Aang chose a small harmless lie over two groups of people continuing to try to kill each other, I wouldn't say that's necessarily "bad for kids" I watched it hundreds of times as a kid since it was constantly shown on TV, and it never once made me think "I should always lie" He used a silly story to make them realize how silly their fighting was.

This is generally considered one of the best episodes in the show, yeah Aang's and Zuko's backstory being told together in alternating segments that parallel one another, alongside a present day narrative that makes both if them confront the emotional turmoil presented within the flashbacks is done quite brilliantly I think Also just, showing how Aang and Zuko, though on opposite sides both in regards to the sides of the conflict, as well as the eras they were born in, are ultimately both just kids who unfairly were torn away from their lives as a result of the war

Frankly, I find the Air Nomad elders to be far less than Aang viewed them. To preserve their pacifist ways, they placed the burden off their survival on a child. Even as they raised him to be a pacifist too, they were counting on him to do battle to protect them. To die for one's beliefs can be noble, but to have a child break those beliefs so you can keep yours intact is truly reprehensible. Speaking of reprehensible, on top of what Ozai did to his son and why, Zuko's sister was in the crown, and she smiled as Zuko was scarred by their father. Even most of the generals didn't smile, but Zuko's sister and Zhao did.

*spoiler warning if you don't know why the Fire Nation attacked the Air Nomads. I think it's pretty clear early on but I could be wrong. I don't think it's fair to assume that the Air Nomads knew that they would be the target. The Air Nomads aren't really involved in world affairs, they aren't getting in any other nation's way in anyway so no one has any beef with them, and they live high in the mountains, meaning no conqueror is exactly salivating over their horrible real estate. Ultimately, this means they don't really protecting. I mean unless someone is randomly racist against Air Nomads or unless there are existing non-Air Nomad specific reasons to attack them, they aren't on anyone else's radar. Which is why it's more likely that they didn't consider the possibility that they would be targeted. Also, direct quote, "the Air Nomads didn't have formal military. ___ attacked them by ambush". Meaning, they were taken by surprise - meaning more likely than not, they didn't think they would be attacked and therefore they weren't "counting on him [Aang] to do battle to protect them". When it comes to Air Nomad culture and the expectations of the Avatar, those are two separate things. Avatars cycle through all the nations so they aren't exclusive to the Air Nomads. When they want to prepare Aang, it's not for their personal benefit because as I mentioned earlier, they are hands off with the other nations so Avatars would probably spend most of their time and energy helping the other Nations deal with their issues. Basically, the Air Nomads are under contractual obligation to teach Avatars airbending and to raise an airbender Avatar every fourth life but truthfully, they don't personally need an Avatar and being included in the Avatar cycle actually hurts them by occasionally putting a target on their back rather than benefiting them at all. Yes, the Air Nomads are pacifists and one facet that you completely ignore is that it leads to their hands off approach with the rest of the world. Just by nature of raising the World Child, they do have to compromise their own values to prepare this child for the the world's benefit of the other nations. The fact is, if the Air Nomads were truly selfish, they wouldn't care that Aang is the Avatar and would just raise him as a normal Air Nomad who is detached from the rest of the world's affairs just like them. If other nations, knew that the Air Nomads raised Avatars as normal monks with no consideration to Avatar training, the Air Nomads would eliminate the only moment of risk to themselves and the only moment when other nations could perceive some threat from these pacifists.

Thing to recognize: Zuko was given the mission when the Avatar hadn't been seen in 100 years. It was meant to be a wild goose chase from which he would never return.

Dante Basco and Mako rightfully get huge amounts of praise for their performances, but the hurt and pain in Zach Tyler Eisen's voice when he gets angry "they wanted to take away everything I knew and everyone I loved!" - he's a sweet kid and is very lighthearted, but there's a sweel of deep emotion in him and he pits it all into his voice. We expect angry, vicious outbursts from Zuko, but hearing this from loveable Aang is a real bolt from the blue. There are two types of character development: when a character changes to reveal a new facet of their personality, and when our understanding of the character changes to reveal a facet of their personality that wasn't previously visible. We can also see WHY Zuko is trying to be such a hardass, despite having been such a sweet kid. That's the son his father wants, the Firelord and his nation expects. The sort of person who could sacrifice a whole division of green troops. The sort who doesn't show "shameful weakness". This is my favourite episode.

I totally get what you're saying about Zuko here, about him being overly harsh at the beginning, and I think you're right! He was literally publicly humiliated/mutilated by his father for acting compassionately. BECAUSE of his care for his people. I also love the parallels between Zuko and Aang, too. Aangs story began with an act of selfishness, while Zukos' story began with an act of compassion. Easily the best episode in book one, except MAYBE the finale.

The parallels between Aang and Zuko really show themselves in this episode. Their individual ongoing stories are really the lifeblood of the whole show. Zuko feels equally as important to the deeper story of the show as Aang does to me. Spoilers ahead, stop reading unless you're a fellow commenter who has finished the show: . . . . . . . . . . Bethany calling it so far ahead of time that Zuko is really angry at himself, man, the payoff on that is gonna be so good. It's hard to say he hates his father, he's just so desperate for affection and recognition, an extremely human characteristic. It's what makes it so hard to save yourself from abuse without anybody's help. Now imagine being abused by the most powerful and dangerous man in the world.

Now we get to see a glimpse of who Zuko was before being banished. He was a bit uppity but he clearly wanted to do good for his nation and wanted to be a good leader. We can see that he has been projecting what he has been tought and even then his inate honor has shone trough at times meaning he could never truly throw that away especially with Iroh helping him. For Ozai having his son and heir come to a meating and interrupt it and then act all high and mighty and then starting to beg emediatley during the fight he probably just tought that this was extremly shamefull weakness. From his point of view this is probably reasonable but he also chose to burn his son because he refused to fight him after just talking out of turn witch considering he didn't activley spread it to the rank and file soldiers means that most soldiers and civillians would probably belive that this is overkill even in the fire nation culture. Zuko basically got scarred because he refused to fight his dad witch his dad just saw as weakness witch is just extremly sad. We see Zhao sitting there and smiling at Zuko being burned witch as far as we know Zuko has done nothing to him and hell even the general he called out didn't activley seem to enjoy it. This also makes the fact that Zhao calls him a coward after not burning him in their agni kai even worse because he was there seeing Ozai call Zuko basically the same for even refusing to fight. This also probably truly cemented to Zhao that Zuko was a worthless heir to the throne. Also the girl sitting next to Iroh smiling at Zuko being burned. Probably nothing to worry about yet guys. It was bad enough that Ozai burned him but you could at least argue that its part of the agni kai tradition and thus mandatory even if it still is wrong in basically every way. Him banishing Zuko on a impossible quest was just extra dickery to get him out of the line of succsesion since Zuko proved to be too weak for his pourposeses as he would not conform to Ozais wishes by fighting him. In this absolutley horrible situationen Zuko showed the most honor he could and still got punished for it. Its no surprise that he would turn out the way he has.

9:17 "Aang, I'm not going to let them take you away from me." This is the most heartbreaking scene from Gyatso for me. If things had turned out differently, if he had managed to catch Aang before he ran away, or they had a chance to talk, I am very convinced that Gyatso would have gone with Aang. Kind of like an, "I understand, let's go... you just need a bit of time away. Let's fly around on Appa." Or Gyatso was already planning on taking Aang and running away from the other monks. Who knows? Unfortunately, the fact that this was the last time they ever saw each other again is tragic. 10:12 It was not the Joker but instead, it was Firelord Ozai that was the first time I heard Mark Hamill as a terrifying villain. My dad actually pointed out to me as a kid in the credits that Luke Skywalker voiced Ozai and I was blown away.
