I’d say one of the biggest causes for this shift is their environments, and how it framed their ideas of their futures. Aang’s culture, while humble and selfless in spirit are largely detached from the world and train their young with few familial relationships. This makes Aang’s context for some foreseen conflict and duty very nebulous and the removal of his mentor and friends very confusing. Zuko’s culture is extremely attached in nature. Duty, loyalty, hierarchy. Similar to Aang, everything is taken from him, but not permanently. It is a place and people he can still return to. He was raised to know the conflict and what is right, so he has a very clear idea what to do and what to care about.

I always like to point this out, because it's a small moment that's easy to forget by the time you arrive at The Storm, but it's so significant near the end of the 2nd episode, Zuko leaps from his ship tower to catch Aang as he flies away. there was a VERY GOOD CHANCE he was going to miss, and fall to his death that desperation and willingness to sacrifice even his survival instincts to be in the good graces of his father, is so tragic and Ozai deserves all the comeuppance

it's important to notice this now, that while you do see Azula looking "smug", many others in the crowd have similar expressions. Zhao is also notably present, and the other generals. In the live action series they put in a very little nice extra to the story that the 41st division, whos live Zuko saved, is in the end the crew he got with him later. So when Iroh tells that to the crew, while Zuko rescues Aang, when Zuko comes back they bow all respect to him. I think that was a really nice extra because before they often thought he was an asshole who doesn't care about them, but now they knew he saved their all lives and paid for that with his scar and the bansihment.

It's so sad to learn about Zuko's backstory, knowing how full of love for his nation and innocence he had a child; only for it to be twisted into spite and bitterness. Even through it all, he still is just a boy who wants to come home. But even crueler, is the fact that his father sent him to capture the Avatar when nobody even knew where he was. It's been a fool's errand and nobody ever expected him to find anything to begin with.

The juxtaposition of Aang and Zuko with their responsibilities is beautiful because we learned about why they're the way they are! 🌪👦😢🤴🔥 🌪🧒Aang was a sweet kid raised by Gyatso, who was an excellent father figure to him and had good friends to play around with. But things took a turn when he discovered that he was the Avatar because he was forced to grow up faster than necessary, his friends didn't want to play with him anymore, and ran away both from home and his responsibilities despite all Gyatso did to defend him🧒🌪 🔥🤴Zuko was a young prince who was heir to the throne and wanted to start learning about his responsibilities, but when a general proposed killing innocent people in their nation as bait in a war strategy, Zuko was quick to object out of care and concern for his people. But, his father, Ozai, being the conditional-loving perfectionist he is, saw Zuko's objection as a betrayal and imperfection, and for that sole/petty reason, he incinerates half of Zuko's face in front of the whole nation. And his hunt for Aang would've been for nothing if Katara didn't have her outburst right by Aang's iceberg, thus destroying it and setting Aang free🤴🔥 Aang ran away because he was UNWILLING to be the Avatar while underage, Zuko was exiled at a young age all because he was WILLINGLY being a responsible prince.

Those airbending kids never made sense to me. They were okay with playing with Aang as the ONLY 12 year old MASTER airbender. Yet just because he was told he was also the Avatar, suddenly whichever team he's on makes it an "unfair advantage". If I was gonna say or think anything like that, it would have been because he was a master among the rest of us. But the avatar title? Something that changed absolutely nothing about him? Kids, man.
