About kiri I have two theories 1- she's a virgin birth, and further down the line she'll be a messiah. The movie refers to her birth like "a miracle", so that wouldn't be a stretch. 2-she's a physical representation of pandora. The deep way she feels pandora's heartbeat and connected with the fish at the end made me think she has a special connection with the planet.

I fully agree with the idea of Kiri being the messiah. I feel like if she was just an avatar for Eywa, as some fans say, it would take away from her identity and her own character so I much more like the idea that she has no father and will be a messiah.

Then my work is finished for today! 😂🎟 James Cameron, let me be part of your PR team! 🤭 It's truly INCREDIBLE to watch, though. I'm determined to see it more times on the big screen because it simply isn't the same to watch it at home. I quite literally don't have the technological equipment to let these visuals soar as much as they're capable of.

I liked how the Metkayina at first accused Jake of bringing the war to them, but really the humans would've made their way there anyway. The humans were "destined' to follow the tulkuns to those islands eventually. I think now the Metkayina understand that now, and they're ready to address the threat. I also enjoyed all the new characters, to include Spider. Any new character that didn't get a full story arc was likely just beginning their full arc that will take place over future films. As for Kiri, I think the father was a mother. I think Eywa made a copy of Grace, but with the natural powers of Pandora flowing through her. I don't know why know there was an ominous scene about the Grace / Kiri connection tho. I guess we"ll see.
@LadyJenevia
@LadyJenevia Жыл бұрын
They needed to learn that the Sky People have no 'humanity' (or whatever the Pandora/Na'vi equivalent of that word is). Their "violence is wrong" philosophy doesn't work when the Sky People can coldly, tactically inflict that level of violence. Also, now that Spider is back with the Sullys I have zero doubt that he's going to tell them exactly why the Sky People are hunting the tulkuns. All of that carnage for a tiny container of fluid. Ronal needs to avenge her soul-sister! 🗡🔥

My Kiri theory is very close to one of yours!! I think she was conceived in Grace's avatar body during the "failed" transfer scene. I think Kiri is the result of Grace's spirit touching Ehwa in her last moments ("I'm with her...She's real.") and maybe reincarnating as a child of the two of them?? It satisfies two angles for me -- on a meta level, it can explain why Sigourney Weaver plays both characters -- all Kiri's corporeal traits are coming from Grace and Grace's lab-grown avatar, so it makes sense to me that Kiri would sound like her. In-universe, the circumstances of her conception give a tangible reason for Kiri's much deeper connection to her surroundings -- a connection so profound that even other Na'vi find her odd. IMO, something that cynical critiques of the first film have in common is a dismissal of Ehwa as just a deus ex machina device instead what she is -- an actual character in this story. If you accept that Pandora is a fantasty world hosting a hivemind nature goddess sustained through the balance of all things that live and breathe on the planets surface, there's suddenly a lot less to complain about.
@LadyJenevia
@LadyJenevia Жыл бұрын
Since the expression "Mother Nature" already exists in English, I see Eywa as the more tangible version of that idea. It enhances the 'aliveness' of the idea that we (humans/Na'vi, animals, plants) are all living creatures that should peacefully cohabitate on our planet. I think that the Avatar series is the polar opposite of cynicism, and people who can't let go of that cynicism when being presented with this beautiful world are not going to provide the perspective or insight I want about the Avatar films. 😆 I'm pretty open to any theories Avatar-fans have about Grace's lineage. Forming and sharing theories is a fun way to pass the time until Avatar 3 comes out! 🥰🌊✨

Aww your kitty is the sweetest🐈‍⬛. I totally agree The Way of Water is hands down my favourite movie of 2022 and my favourite James Cameron movie. 3 hours rarely fly by this fast, the Metkiena reef is one of the most stunning locations ever put to film, I adored the Sully family with Tukturey being my favourite she's adorable. Quaritch was a even better villain as a Recom than he was as a human and that climax was perfection with the most emotional ending to a movie I've seen all year. I hope Way of Water has a best picture nominated at the academy awards for best picture it deserves it!

I haven't paid attention to janes cameron but wow he sounds like a legend for what he's doing with casting a wider net for the environmental issues. @LadyJenevia

A lot of people cling on to old stories about him being tyrannical on set but he himself has spoken about how he has learned that that's not the way to be when working on a film and he doesn't act like that anymore. I believe it's mentioned in his masterclass and even Kate Winslet has talked about how he's different to work with now compared to when she worked with him on Titanic. It would be nice if people would do a bit more research instead of spreading 'yellow journalism' talking points. James Cameron is an icon, an environmentalist, and all-around badass! 😁

I found the marine biologist's arc interesting. He was clearly part of the capitalist machine of hunting the tulkun using his knowledge to get rich, but the longer Spider was around them, questioning how they could do what they were doing, the marine biologist was getting visibly more and more uncomfortable, which I interpreted to mean that he was coming to the realization that what he was doing was wrong, but still doing it anyway.

@@AK-jt9gx Yeah it definitely seemed like he had been at this job for a long enough time to be able to build up a wall and not really think about the implications of what they were doing, but after Spider joined them the cracks began to show and he seemed like he was slowly being reminded of what his knowledge and research was being put toward.

Omg the way we both saw how many kids they had in the first few minutes and thought, "welp..one of them is definitely gonna die".. 😅😂 Also, just wanted to say: I'm new to your channel and I'm really enjoying your content and I resonate so much with the perspective and humor you bring to your videos! Also also, the way you described the moment Jake said, "I See You" to Lo'ak.. my sentiments exactly. And the way the animation captured the look in his eyes, the little waver in Jake's voice.. it was so beautiful..🥹😭 One thing that stood out to me emotionally that I didn't hear you mention, and I wonder how you felt about this scene was the palpability of Neytiri's grief as a mother turned into cold rage in battle.. the looks in her eyes, the screams she let out.. it hit me really, that moment along with Kate Winslet's performance grieving the whale that was hunted.. those two moments stood out to me emotionally and as incredible performances from Kate and Zoe.

So first, I love Avatar - flaws and all, if nothing else it is STUNNING to watch and I love watching your videos because damn I get caught up in your excitement and it is infectious! (the inserts of the different 90s-00s flicks were genius and fuck I laughed out loud so many times.) However.. while I'm glad that Cameron really does put his wallet and time where his mouth is on issues like the environment and he does in fact take it seriously and he very much is a master at his craft... yt rich dudes really need to stop talking about shit they can't wrap their head around and it goes to show that even people with the best intentions (Im happy to give him a pass on good faith) there's still a disconnect and underlying racism and colonialism at play. His comments about the Sioux nation showed that clear as day. Now, people can learn and grow and I really hope he does come to understand why comments like that and others are just garbage and how much harm that kind of mindset actually causes, and Im crossing my fingers that with that understanding.. he'll take a step back and let actual indigenous people take the reins.

I love your analysis! You superbly articulated a lot of what I was thinking about Cameron's message, while providing some very insightful context. Loved the movie and loved this review! I am a new subscriber and I have so many thoughts ... 1. I agree with 22:30 o__0 Sully is wayyy more attractive now lmao 2. I think a large part of why I like this movie is because yes it's a big blockbuster property but it's ORIGINAL and has a real purpose and focus for being made. It's creative and even in its simple dialogue at times has real heart that I think everyone can connect with if they let themselves. 3. As someone interested in working in post production on films, I love the respect James Cameron gave to the VFX artists! The time and hard work really paid off so I hope we see more of this in Hollywood. 4. I didn't even recognize those parenting differences among the girls v boys you talked about, super interesting and I'm glad you pointed it out 5. My friends and I thought maybe Kiri was born from some sort of immaculate conception from Eywa? 6. I find the casting of the movie also very wholesome in that even though there are huge names like Zoe Saldana and Kate Winslet in the cast, it doesn't take focus away from the purpose of the story like, they aren't the stars, the world is (does that make sense??). AND we get new young actors who are given this awesome opportunity! Yay! (If you can't tell, I'm tired of the sameness of Hollywood persisting right now) So excited for Avatar 3!

The first movie was honestly rather boring story-wise (insert typical white savior native American shtick), so I’m really glad this one got more interesting. I chalk it up to Jake Sully - a boring cardboard protagonist if ever there was one - getting much less screen time.

Jake Sully is not a 'white saviour'. If he was that trope, he would have had the Na'vi completely changing their way of living to be like the Sky People instead. Jake Sully is an example of what happens when you educate a person on the full extent of the violence of the system they are working to uphold, and they have to confront the emotional fallout of the harm they are causing. Eywa, as an 'all-knowing' deity of the Avatar universe, chose him with her 'sign' because he was in a prime position to help the Na'vi because he knows how the Sky People work, and had it in him to be a better person, but the Na'vi didn't win just because of him. He was only ever one individual in the larger, collective movement of the Na'vi people and the other living creatures of Pandora rising up to fight back.

@@LadyJenevia hm, perhaps I wasn’t aware of the full definition of the trope. Not that it matters, because the Navi would’ve been helpless without them. Think about it: “Natives are basically helpless, or at the very least struggling, in the face of colonial oppression until a white man arrives to save them.” If that doesn’t scream white savior (as A concept, not the trope), I don’t know what does. Plus, in the sequel Jake is leaning into this whole “live amongst the natives” thing pretty damn hard. I can understand him referring to humans as “the ones who come from the sky” or whatnot when talking to other Navi, but even in his own internal monologues? Dude was human most of his life for Christ’s sake, why does he do that? Even the humans have the “decency” to call the native species by their name, so it really irks me that Jake now acts like he’s always called them that. That aside, first movie was still pretty damn boring. We’ve seen the story a dozen times before, it’s just the backdrop that’s shifted. As I said, though, thankfully the new one actually tried smg different. The first pretty much left my brain by the week after I saw it, but this one will stay with me for a good while.
