My abuelo Pedro Juan never talked about war we only found out after he past away about him being a Borinqueneer, which he saidly past away recently. I miss him a lot and he is one of the biggest reasons that I chose to serve in the army and that was before we knew about the regiment. I am a soldier. I am a fighter. I am puertorriqueño.

Honoring and remembering today my Father-in-law, Cpl José Matos, heroic member, machine gunner of the 65th who survived Korea. After the war, Señor Matos continued serving as an Army MP, finished college degrees, became a teacher, principal & superintendent of schools, and founded and served on the board of directors of credit unions. He died one year ago. He was a great American, and we love him & miss him greatly.

@@valnwk - Actually there's already a pretty good documentary that was made a few years back but a commercial movie with a plot and human interest stories like "Titanic" or "Hacksaw Ridge" would really be worth it. The thing with independent movies is that they're a hit or miss affair and a really good movie about the 65th US Infantry would require some pretty good CGI which ain't cheap.

My Uncle SFC Donato Roman was awarded the Combat Infantry Badge, the Silver Star & Purple Heart during his tour with the 65th Infantry Regiment during the Korean War. Sadly he died of his wounds in Japan. He was laid to rest in my family's small town of Isabela Puerto Rico. He is an inspiration and source of pride for the family. My Grandma missed her Brother desperately and spoke of him often. On occasion l visit his grave and pay my respects. I told his story and promote his sacrifice to my son who though he never met him looks on his photo with adoration and mentions him with pride to anyone whose remotely interested in military history.

Why they have to take so long to recognize this? My father Cpl Cruz-Nieves and so many others are not with us anymore to receive a very well deserved recognition. People don't know how that war was. It was not just cold there but polar weather and they didn't had the proper gear but just European weather uniforms from WW2.

The 65 is very old first started under Spanish rule as the Home defence against the English,Dutch and French who tried to invade Puerto Rico. They defended San Juan against the US in the Spanish American War. The United States Army was so impress that they ask the US to add them to the United States Army for Puerto Rican home defence in 1917 the were used from National Guard to regular Army for World War One and the rest of the other wars. So you can say that their the Oldies Militia in the US, sines Puerto Rico was colonize by Spain in 1493 and the US was colonize by England in the 1600 hundreds.

@@anactaneustheeleventh2542 I lived the beginning of the home computer age, I am of the same generation as Gates and Job's. And in the Army had the honor of seeing in action the ancient gunnery computers of World War Two Warships like the Iowa Class and artillery of the Old Army guns. They were vacuumed tube, punch card feed and took a large room to house and operate. I saw the original internet of the old Manhattan Project that connected the colleges and the government so that Einstein and group could safely pass back and fort information on the A bomb. I saw the change from tubs to transistors, from punch cards and tape reals to GUI and the Mouse. The only thing that did not change was the knowledge of Judges had on the computers as to fraud and theft and protection of copy rights of creation of Computers and their software. That came later in the late 1980 to 1990 Where finally legislators in the United States and the Free world caught up to Bill Gate's practices on infringement of others intellectual property that led Gates to step down from Microsoft leadership.

If you pay close attention to Mel Gibson's movie "We Were Soldiers" you will notice that many Puerto Ricans took part in the battle depicted in the film including battalion commander Tony Nadal (played in the movie by Puerto Rican actor Jsu Garcia) and a number of Puerto Ricans were killed (check the end credits), Puerto Ricans' actions in Vietnam were just as awe-inspiring and courageous as during the Korean War except that no all-Puerto Rican unit took part in Vietnam and Puerto Ricans who served in Vietnam were spread out through all units and branches of service.
