OMG people. The words were rewritten from a pagan perspective. They are seeing Maria as the female embodiment of their Goddess. has nothing to do with the Christian (Catholic) form of prayer and heiarchy. The woman singing has found the physical embodiment of her Goddess in a church (Christianity).

According to Frollo (and the whole catholic church, for that matter), everything that wasn't Catholic, was-in the Middle Ages- labeled as 'pagan'. Esmeralda isn't catholic, but nonetheless, she believes in her own way, and in her prayer she asks Mary to 'take down the walls' between all religions and ethnic cultures, she wants everyone to be treated in the same way...at least, that's my interpretation :)

Not Catholic at this time, but Christian. The Hunchback of Notre Dame takes place in 1492 before the division of the Church into Catholicism and Protestantism. Early Christians were still arguing over different beliefs, still working through what was dogma and what was heresy. Pagans would have been considered those who do not believe in God and Jesus, following their own religion. It could easily be said that the gypsies were pagans (don't know their thoughts so not going to make a concrete statement), but in my opinion I would not say that Esmeralda is a pagan especially with this prayer she sings to Mary. She may not have been educated in the ways of the church, but she believes to the best of her ability, and like you said wants everyone to be treated as equals.

I agree, this music is best with religion left out of it, just listen to it for the emotion. but when I pray I always pray to Jesus subconsciously, I don't understand the ideology of memorizing only the words of prayer, having its repetition dim its meaning overtime. Wouldn't you think Jesus would rather you just speak your mind?
