I left a comment last year, where i asked if you were planning a trip to Aveiro. I was so excited to see the tours. My family and I were there in the fall of 2019 just before COVID. You actually walked past the apartment we stayed in. What a blast to see all the places again. I must say though Aveiro loses some of its charm when covered with tourists. I don't begrudge the tourists at all and i'll admit that i am a toiurist as well, but the crowds of people are too much for me. I absolutely love your videos, the tall ship races video was super. I like the history you relate. Please keep up the travels and share whatever you can. I am living vicariously through you, until I can move to Portugal for good. If you could plan a trip North to Geres or Serra da Estrela that would be otimo.

Bella y sorprendente ciudad, me encantó todo su aire de mezcla de moderno con antiguo. que se nota en toda el recorrido, sobre todo en la Catedral con tanta iluminación natural y mezcla de nuevo con viejo que provoca soepresa. Los canales, claro no son vistosos como los de Venecia, pero son una versión nueva, inesperada con esos barcos tan coloridos y esa agua tan límpida y que parce muy profunda. Otra belleza a la que nos tiene acostumbrados Portugal.

@POV tours - thanks for your videos. You have the location described as "central /northern" but don't you mean more accurately "central/western" or "central/coastal"? It can't really be both central and northern even though it's sort of half way between Lisbon and Porto. Also, tourists beware of a few of the Plaza restaurants. I had a wine at one of the restaurants where the waiter opened the bottle and splintered the cork and got both cork and paper in the bottle and it poured out into the glass so I drank none of it and asked for another bottle (single serving bottles). The restaurant then proceeded to charge us for both bottles although they poorly served and I didn't consume the first drink. I did not complain, but be aware this may happen...

Hello Christopher! 😀 The region of Aveiro is one of those regions that can easily be considered at the same time central Portugal AND northern Portugal. Officially and administratively, Aveiro (the city) is in the Central Region of Portugal, but about half of the region's municipalities are officially in the North. If we were to divide Portugal into three identical zones, from north to south (the metric I use in my videos), Aveiro would clearly be in the north. Hence the central/northern, officially it's one thing, geographically it's another. 😅

Bom dia Miguel, aqui dia 22 de Agosto pela manhã, no Brasil também conhecida como veneza portuguesa, a diferença é que na Itália as casas ficam literalmente dentro da água,e em Aveiro são canais para a navegação,nasci aí perto (Pampilhosa)mas não cheguei a conhecer.Esse homem no inicio da rua Estevão com certeza não é portugues,não temos o hábito de andar des- nudos, coisa feia. Miguel, Portugal tem que ficar de olhos abertos, tenho a impressão que Aveiro foi invadida pelos castelha- nos. A palavra lume aqui é referida como "fogo" e de vez em quando eu uso algumas expressões da nossa lingua, so para ver a cara de espanto, depois eu explico o que significa. O uso do telemovel virou uma praga, aqui tem gente que parace zumbi. Abçs de Iperó. Você parece professor de história, deveria receber um salário das cidades, pois também comentas a história da mesma ao jongo dos tempos.

Olá Alcides, boa noite! 😀 A comparação com Veneza é algo exagerada, mas nem sei como essa alcunha começou. Talvez tenham sido jornalistas, não sei... O que é certo é que ficou mesmo "a Veneza de Portugal". O homem da Rua Estevão era espanhol, penso eu. Muitos turistas espanhóis na cidade. Não sou professor de história nem tirei curso de história, embora história sempre tenha sido a minha paixão. O problema é que profissionalmente é uma área complicada (pelo menos em Portugal), quase só dá para ser professor e isso eu não queria. 🙂 Agora através do KZbin posso ser um historiador por alguns momentos.

They are not comparing Aveiro with Venice. You are right it's completely different. Only the both have the canals. I visited the both and I prefer Aveiro. In Venice I enjoyed more the historic buildings than the canals.

Like Candida said, it's not a comparison, it's just a harmless nickname due to a few superficial similarities. 🙂 For example, in the 19th century the state of Colorado, in the USA, was known as "Switzerland of America", due to its beautiful mountains adorned with glacial lakes.

I am being honest when I say that I thank you for posting the video. But I must also be honest and tell you that for all of its popularity with tourists, Aveiro feels synthetic, fabricated, put in place, cold, uninviting, even false. The walk felt more like I was monotonously wondering around the Venetian Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA, than joyfully getting lost in Venice, Italy. The one emotion I understand characterizes Portugal more than any other is “saudade”. And to be honest, Aveiro does not inspire saudade and is completely forgettable. Sorry, but I’m just being honest.

Hey, no need to say sorry, I welcome all constructive feedback. I don't expect the subscribers to love all the places I visit. 🙂 But in defense of Aveiro I just want to say that everything shown in the video is "organic", it's not a facade to attract tourists or to copy Venice. 25 years ago the city basically the same (the center actually looked better, because it had a nice park and square where all that construction work is taking place now, I think they're building an underground car park), and yet it barely attracted any tourists. For example, the salt flats that shaped the development of Aveiro and its canals for centuries are literally just a 10 minute walk from the city center. I'm going to show a little bit of the salt flats in a future video.

In fact, that Aveiro has Roman roots; that salt production was, and still is, an industry there; and that the origin of the “Moliceiro” boats is tied to early agriculture in the region is exactly why today’s Aveiro seems so strange to me. But, as you explain, the fact that Averio was once of no interest to tourists and is now a tourist Mecca suggests that the city fathers recognized that investing in developing a totally different industry - namely, tourism - might revive the city’s commercial importance. And they were obviously right. Maybe it’s just that I love Portugal so much, and that to me Aveiro feels like a city that is a tourist visiting its own country.

@@pncicitap2519 I fully understand your comments, cities can lose their true essence when tourism gets out of hand... This is one of the reasons why I like to show all kinds of places on my channel, from big touristy cities, like Lisbon or Porto (which is what some people only want to see), to small, rural and "authentic" towns that no one has ever heard of.

Interesting points, honestly. I do however see the lack of 'saudade' as a good thing. While other cities in Portugal feel depressing and have decaying infrastructures and rely heavily on tourism, such as Porto and Coimbra, Aveiro feels small and authentic enough with its local food and architecture. But I agree, despite being less tourism dependent than other cities, it's still way too much.

@@POVTours What you do is understandable. After all, you have to try to satisfy the likes and dislakes of all types of viewers. Besides, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Averiro has its own character. It may not be my cup of tea, but it obviously is for many tourists. Please, just keep doing what you are doing. And don't forget that you said you would one day take a walk around beautiful Amarante.

Olá António! Eu acho que as pessoas estão a levar demasiado a sério esta inocente alcunha de Aveiro, não compreendo alguns dos comentários tão negativos neste vídeo. O nome "Veneza de Portugal" já existe e é divulgado há muitas décadas, não fui eu que o inventei. Sempre que se fala em Aveiro, essa alcunha é mencionada. A comparação existe por ser a única cidade portuguesa com canais, somente isso. 🙂 O Líbano tambem já foi muito conhecido por ser a "Suíça do Médio Oriente", apesar das enormes diferenças entre os 2 países.
