eu só aceito esse elogio ser vier de um estrangeiro, nunca gostei de gabarolice barata...eu acho Lisboa dos nossos antepassados muito interssante, e bonita, mas com estes democratas de meia tigela, têm a cidade toda suja, sem asseio nenhum, a limpeza é só onde passa a procissão, os dirigentes da autarquia que vão até a Espanha, Alemanha, França etc, e vejam a diferença, não vêm erva por todo o lado, não vêm paredes borradas, jardins mal tratados, ruas esburacadas...passeios partidos, não, lá não vêm isso, são capitais do primeiro mundo...o porto sofre do mesmo mal.. já apanhei vergonha alheia a ver turista a filmarem paredes em pedra de monumentos nacionais, cheios de arvorezinhas a sair das frinchas das paredes, e erva, e os turistas todos na risota, pegada, a filmarem, isto foi no centro da cidade...

Lapa is a gorgeous neighborhood, so it makes sense that countries (like mine) would choose to have their embassies, consulates, or official residences located there. During the last seven years of my career, I was assigned to the U.S. Embassies in Mexico City and San Salvador, El Salvador, Central America. In Mexico City, the Ambassador lived is a residence away from the Embassy. But in San Salvador, the Ambassador’s official residence was located inside the embassy complex, a large compound that today is considered a “White Elephant”. All of that said, the atmosphere of Lapa’s Embassy Row, while beautiful, makes it feel like one is walking the streets of a “police state that is full of geopolitical intrigue and mistrust”. When you walked out of the Embassy Row area and onto a street that is used by trams, I actually felt relief. Thank you.

Strangely enough, it is not because, as so many Americans assume, we have two political parties. What we have in Washington, D.C. is a Uni-Party comprised of Republicans and Democrats, all of whom are corrupt and interested in nothing else except being reelected, all while arrogantly admitting that the billions-of-dollars investment in Ukraine’s conflict with Russia is “money well spent” because no Americans are dying, only Ukrainians. That statement/sentiment is morally corrupt and disgusting. Just so you understand, the only thing I defend about my country are the principles expounded in the U.S. Declaration of Independence - specifically, the rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness as inherent, inalienable, and endowed by the Creator. Everything else my country claims and represents is worthy of disagreement and of causing the peoples of other countries to dislike or even hate my country. My point is that you are assigning to me - a single individual - the collective sins of every one of my fellow Americans. I don’t know what country you are from, but I know that you are not only like no one else in your country, but also unlike no one else on the planet.

The American embassy is basically the opposite of the charming official residence of the US ambassador: located in a modern area of Lisbon, it's a huge compound that isn't particularly visually appealing. 😀 Lapa's Embassy Row does have a slight eerie feeling in some places.

@@POVTours It sometimes works out that way. In Mexico City, the U.S. Embassy is an unappealing structure that looks like a white cube with windows. But it is located on Mexico City's main Blvd, so the area is nice. In San Salvador, the whole complex is actually located in Santa Elena, not San Salvador. It is a compound comprising several astatically appealing Mediterranean style buildings. The interior of the Ambassador's residence is nice, but it does not feel like a home. Whoever the Ambassador is, they are stuck there day and night. By contrast, the home of the Deputy Chief of Mission, or Charge D'affaires, is located outside the Embassy complex and feels like lived in.

Olá Miguel. Então foi mais uma vez à Lapa?Bem da outra vez, foi mais basílica,e jardim, agora é que filmou bem o meu bairro . Mostrou a casa onde trabalhava e morava,quando vinha da rua de S.Domingues,e virou na rua da lapa ,logo o s.predio à esquerda.n. 110. E o palacete da esquina de s. DOMINGUES e daBuenos Aires , que mostrou no videu cor amarela era da irmã da s.onde trabalhava,e eu ia lá à missa quando não me apetecia ir à Basílica,de onde me casei em 66 e saí do bairo.Para mim o bairro mais lindo e destinguido de Lisboa.Os jardins, são todos nas traseiras dos predios, qual deles o mais lindo.Adorei ter sido criada nesse bairro.Aind hoje, quando venho a Portugal tento sempre passar por lá. Este causa-me nostalgia uma vez que frequentei um externato de freiras na Rua Santana á Lapa (Sagrado Coração de Jesus das Oblatas) Uma ordem Francesa, nos anos 60.Meu pai era militar e conheço bem o Quartel das Janelas Verdes. Olá Linda! 😀 The rugby's game... wow! I've never felt as emotional with the national football team as I felt Sunday watching the Lobos (wolves) play. Even considering the fact that Portugal won the European Championship in 2016, the peak of emotion for a football-mad country. Rugby is now firmly my favorite sport. Maybe one day we can even beat the All Blacks. 😜🥝 Rugby is an old boys club, though, the Six Nations Championship is a closed shop, we won't play any tier 1 nations in the next few years, so rugby will struggle to gain momentum in Portugal. The elitism of rugby is what annoys me the most about the sport.

Obrigada pela revísita que me proporcionou. Nascida há 73 anos e criada em Lisboa e parte na Lapa. O Bairro continua com aristocracia desde que me lembro mas misturada com todas as profissões que já não existem e que eram úteis a todos. Um tio era relojoeiro na travessa da Conceição à Lapa e ali misturava-se o artesão com o Conde, Marquês e outros títulos com respeito e amizade. O que resta da Lapa muito elegante, modernizada e esconderijos sem alma.

Thank you for another enjoyable video. There are several comments I want to make, so I will separate them. First, last week I learned that, unlike that of Spain or Austria, for example, Portugal’s architecture is fundamentally “minimalistic” in character, including in the Lapa neighborhood. Even the colorful azulejo tiles that cover so many of the facades of buildings are for the most part flat and smooth, unlike those of the Alhambra in Granada or the Alcazar in Sevilla, Spain. I subscribe to the Cotaparedes KZbin Channel from Mexico, which deals in architecture, and the channel has visited Portugal and filmed several minimalistic homes located in rural areas. Last week I really enjoyed watching one Cotaparedes video in particular (“Impresionante Casa en Portugal de Masa y Vacío”). I didn’t think I liked “minimalist” architecture, but I now know that it has its charms.

@@lorrainepeddle9334 I’m sorry if a touched a nerve with “you”, or with what you assume represents a collective “we” that includes the single "like" to your comment. You obviously don’t like my country and invite imaginary others to feel the same way. Believe me, I fully understand your feelings. My parents and my oldest 5 siblings were born in Mexico. I am a 79-year old hyphenated Mexican-American. Knowing everything I have learned about my country from a 28-plus year career in Federal law enforcement, I know all the damage my country has done to other countries. That said, when I had to opportunity to serve in Mexico and El Salvador I did everything I could to try to mitigate the damage caused, and to actually achieve the goals of the program so that they in fact benefited the host country. And I made many friends with whom I still keep in contact. All of that said, Miguel knows that I love Portugal, and in particular Lisbon. As you suggest, I have actually “moved on”. In fact, if it was totally up to me, I would “move there” - to Lisbon, I mean. Because life is such that in the end we regret, not the things we did, but rather the things we did not do. When the time comes for me to leave this earth, my biggest regret will be that my family and I did not live our lives in Lisbon and, like the Portuguese explorers before us, from there set out on voyages to lesser places. Calm down and take care.

Hello and thank you for your insightful comments! 😀 Portuguese architecture from the 13th century until the early 18th century was not minimalistic, especially the flamboyant "Manueline" style of the 16th century (Jerónimos Monastery, for example). But the 1755 earthquake changed everything. Very limited funds and the urgency of building led to a new concept of architectural rationality, adhered to by the country as a whole. It became the norm.

Speaking of geopolitical intrigue and mistrust, while the building that houses the official residence of the U.S. Ambassador is elegant and beautiful, I can imagine at least one U.S. Ambassador who lived there looking out the window and at times to themselves thinking, “Why can’t I instead live across the street, in the architecturally intriguing home that might one day be ‘the future home of the POV Tours KZbinr’”?, and at other times thinking, “I wonder if an enemy country of the U.S. occupies the residence and from within its walls is using electronic surveillance devices to spy on me”.

Speaking of intrigue, the residence is now known as "Casa Carlucci", in dedication to the memory of Frank Carlucci, former Deputy Director of the CIA and Secretary of Defense to President Ronald Reagan, at the end of the Cold War. He also served as United States Ambassador to Portugal from 1975 to 1978, the critical years of the country’s transition to democracy. Carlucci and Mário Soares met frequently on the top floor of this house to exchange ideas on how to ensure that the Portuguese Revolution did not degenerate into a communist dictatorship. 🙂 Almost 50 years later, Carlucci is still vilified by the Portuguese Communist Party...

@@alcidesmarques3250 É uma possibilidade, mas não sei... O meu objetivo era que todas as pessoas, de qualquer língua ou nacionalidade, tivessem mais ou menos a mesma experiência com os vídeos. Daí haver legendas em várias línguas, apesar da principal ser inglês. Se eu narrar os vídeos em português, provavelmente só os portugueses gostarão da experiência. Há brasileiros que não entendem bem o nosso sotaque. E pior ainda para as nacionalidades que não falam português, não entenderiam nada. Legendas + narração seria muito trabalho pra editar os vídeos, eu não conseguiria fazer vídeos semanais... Para já vou continuar com legendas, penso que é mais imersivo, a pessoa sente-se dentro do vídeo.

Last comment. I don’t know if you know that there is a board game called “Lisboa”. The game board, cards, and pieces make for a beautiful work of art - like Lisboa Antigua. I have never played the game, but from having read the instructions know that it is not an easy play. As I understand it, the objective of the game is to rebuild Lisbon after the destruction caused by the 1755 earthquake. I suspect that in playing the game one could learn a lot about life itself. But, if nothing else, one could do worse than simply buy the game (which is not cheap) and with the game board, cards, and pieces create a collage, frame it as a work of art, and hang it on a wall.

Vera, infelizmente isso acontece em todo o mundo, mas em Portugal isso se deve principalmente à atitude de alguns brasileiros que não estudam os costumes do país e carregam o Brasil nas costas levando para lá algu- mas atitudes que lá não são bem vistas, som alto, bagunça nas praias, o povo portugues é um povo hordeiro, acostumado à tranquilidade, se assim procederem vai ver que são pessoas maravilhosas. Sou portugues, vivo no Brasil há 64 anos e nunca tive problemas, porque?respeito os costumes e educação nunca foi demais. Abçs de São Paulo.

Um erro enorme comentar factos sem conhecer os dois lados. Devia saber o que muitos brasileiros fazem em Portugal e aos portugueses. O que não cai bem é a falta de educação e o não" saber estar" num país que até tem fama de saber receber. Felizmente não são todos.

Olá Vera! 🙂 Essa é uma caraterística do ser humano e não dos brasileiros, portugueses, ou qualquer outra nacionalidade. Temos uma tendência para colocarmos barreiras ao relacionamento com todos os que são de alguma forma diferentes de nós. Seja devido à nacionalidade, a cor da pele, a religião, ou até mesmo simples diferenças de estilo de vida... Eu já visitei o Brasil e como português senti xenofobia. Foi muito raro, mas aconteceu. Também sei que o mesmo já aconteceu com os vários amigos brasileiros que tenho em Portugal. Raro mas aconteceu. Também senti quando vivi em Inglaterra, e provavelmente todos as pessoas do mundo que vivem fora do seu país já foram alvo de xenofobia alguma vez. Mas o lado positivo, e é nesse que me foco, nenhum desses casos representa o povo na totalidade. Sim, há pessoas xenófobas. Mas também há pessoas que não são. Eu prefiro dar destaque a estas. 🙂

I have lived in Lisbon 3 times in my life - 1987-88, 2005, and 2010-11. There are things I Love about Lisbon, and also - gorgeous Sintra... but honestly, in comparison to some other European capitals - I find Lisbon rather unattractive. Case in point: Lapa! - for a "Millionaire" Neighborhood...where the fvck are the trees? London, Rome, Paris, Madrid, Stockholm, and Istanbul (especially along the Bosphorus, where millionaires, and Billionaires live) are quite lovely...even spectacular. Lapa still looks a bit impoverished, and the the big houses are quite plain...even a bit tacky. Lisbon isn't much on "Green Space", except for the Monsanto Park, and a couple of smaller ones. I mean - even Washington D.C., and Philadelphia have neighborhoods that make Lapa look like a wet street dog! As for me, Porto - in the North is a far more beautiful city.

A Lapa ainda parece um pouco empobrecida, e os casarões são bastante simples... até um pouco cafonas. Lisboa não tem muitos “Espaços Verdes”, excepto o Parque de Monsanto, e alguns mais pequenos. Quero dizer - até mesmo Washington D.C. e Filadélfia têm bairros que fazem a Lapa parecer um cachorro de rua molhado! Quanto a mim, o Porto - no Norte é uma cidade muito mais bonita.

You are not comparing apples to apples, for example when you mention "especially along the Bosphorus, where millionaires, and Billionaires live". Lapa is not THE millionaire neighborhood, or even where many millionaires live. The keyword here is "secret", it's in the title of the video. It's inconspicuous, it's not where one would expect a premium enclave to exist. The Lisbon equivalent of that area along the Bosphorus and the other cities you mentioned would be the gated communities in the Cascais municipality, definitely not Lapa.

Exactly... And Porto has a charm that I say is European that Lisbon doesn't have. Thank God that Porto is still very traditional, with its typical flowers, camellias, on every corner of the city and beautifying its gardens. Lá porque a imagem aparenta estar no meio da estrada, o que indica que provavelmente a câmera está no meio da estrada (e ainda assim sem certezas, pois os angulos enganam muito), não significa que eu esteja no meio da estrada. Se a câmera tiver um suporte com extensão (e tem...) é o suficiente para dar esse efeito. Posso estar bem longe dos carros e ao mesmo tempo parecer que estou no meio da estrada.
