Mike Portnoy from Dream Theater was the drummer for this album, the first after their founding member and drummer Jimmy “The Rev” Sullivan passed away. There is so much more for you to check out from them, especially from this album and earlier on

This is definitely their Magnum Opus. The music is next level, and the lyrics and vocal delivery are so powerful, always get a lump in my throat when I listen to this one. Only thing I dislike about it is that they will never top it (even though they came close with Exist).
@simeondobrev5835 Жыл бұрын
I respect your opinion, but to me, Exist doesn't come close to how well put this song is. It's a bit all over the place imo.

@@simeondobrev5835 it's all over the place if you don't understand what each section represents. Once you understand that, Exist makes so much more sense
@simeondobrev5835Ай бұрын
@coleslaw5013 I understand very well that each section represents the different stages of the earth's and the universe's development. I just don't think it flows well like, for example, Dream Theater did with their song, Octavarium. My favorite part of Exist is the transition after the vocals and before the speech from Neil deGrasse Tyson.
@taylorguerin7781 Жыл бұрын
Fun fact, The Rev(original drummer) wrote most of this song before he died and the ending…”tonight we all die young” was supposed to be the chorus but the band thought it would unbalance the song to have that be the chorus but they knew that wanted to use it so instead they added it to the end of the song.
@28dirtj Жыл бұрын
This song is part of what I believe is one of the 5 stages of grief, they have several songs that are tributes to Jimmy "The Rev" Sullivan I believe. This one I personally think is anger, blaming themselves and wondering what they did to lose their best friend.
@HeavyMetalForLife Жыл бұрын
I take it as the depression stage for the first half and acceptance for the second half (especially the end)
@Tumpzu Жыл бұрын
i think god hates us is the anger and save me as the depression then nightmare as the shock and denial then buried alive is the pain and guilt. fiction is whell obvsly the hope and acceptance
@28dirtj Жыл бұрын
@@Tumpzu I'm not 100% sure on any of them tbh. I think Victim is also a song that I think is one of the 5 stages. I don't think Buried Alive is. The 5 I'm thinking of are So Far Away, Victim, Fiction, Save Me and God Hates Us. But everyone has their own interpretation of every song of course. But you could be right. It's probably Victim- denial, God Hates Us- anger, So Far Away is- depression, Fiction- acceptance and Save Me- bargaining.

The Rev had the entire album recorded before he died. They were rough files but they were all there. The band reached out to Portnoy who's son is a big fan of The Rev and the band. He agreed to record in studio once they had decided to finish the album for Jimmy and his family and of course, the fans. Jimmy was a massive fan of Dream Theater and Mike Portnoy was one of his heroes so for him to lend his talent is a big deal to the band. I visited his grave, said my goodbyes to him officially. It was nice. RIP Jimmy.

wrong, the band did an interview in later years where they clearly explained the writing of Save Me was nowhere near complete and they had to put together the pieces of a bit of a mess to complete the song after the Rev's passing, Mike Portnoy recorded the drumming
@modifidious7171 Жыл бұрын
@@martinarscott3524 Wrong. Jimmy had already worked on "Save Me" and everything else. Portnoy added a ton of stuff to fill in but the skeleton of the entire album was already recorded on an electronic kit at the Rev's house in Huntington Beach. I recall them about to record the album that was to be 'Nightmare' before he died. So, fuck off my post before you try and call me out. Know what you're talking about bum.

I really really like the fact the you guys liked Nobody. It caused a pretty big divide among the fan base cause it was such a different sound that everyone was used to especially for being the single for a new album since basically The Stage’s full album surprise release in 2016 so I’m really glad you guys enjoyed it I definitely recommend exploring their new album for sure. This song was a tribute to their legendary late drummer Jimmy The Rev Sullivan. He made most of their songs even for this album but Portnoy had to step in to record the actual album cause Jimmy died. Last song the Rev wrote was Fiction and he handed it in 3 days before he passed. Its a kind of a good bye letter to say the least. Definitely check that out and their LBC concert which is ideal for you to understand why this is such a beloved band. Critical Acclaim, Afterlife, Unholy Confessions, Chapter 4, A Little Piece of Heaven (their personal Bohemian Rapsody), Almost easy, the Stage, Exist, Acid Rain, So Far Away the official video is also a tribute to the Rev. He was a musical genius (they all are) and the glue of this band. They all grew up together and they ve been creating some real magic for more than 20 years. Welcome to the Family guys. You opened Pandora's box.

Mike Portnoy is a world class drummer known for his complex and tight playing, especially using high hat fillers for simple beats. He was founding member of prog-metal legends Dream Theater, which he and two fellow musicians founded at the age of 18 back in '85, when they were all attending Berklee Music College. He left Dream Theater for good in '09 to help out A7X finish this record. As much as I respect his choice of leaving, he left DT in shambles and they were never really the same without him...
