Mike Portnoy did such an amazing job as a temporary fill in to complete this album. No one can live up to The Rev...period, but so much respect to Mike for keeping The Rev's style throughout this masterpiece of an album🤘. There is also a bit of a Dream Theater riff in this song as well, which is awesome.

One of Jimmy’s main influences was Portnoy
@Adrmeisterwerk3 жыл бұрын
@Prozakhistan yeah so does Mangini, or Danny Carey.. there are tons of better drummers out there than Portnoy and Jimmy but people don't realize or even care about that simply because Portnoy and Jimmy always locked in with the music, with every music they play, they play the music. It's just a matter of preference. I'm not going to make a debate like in the DT fanbase, but just for example, I like both Mangini and Portnoy, I play drums because of Portnoy but hell I want to be as advanced as Mangini, and my influence in drumming mostly came from Portnoy.
@MonstrMatt3 жыл бұрын
Personally i think Mike is a better drummer(not by much), but god damn I miss The Rev. Mike Portnoy was The Rev's favorite drummer which was a major reason he was asked. Also Mike asked DT around the time to take a break from touring and they didnt want to so he literally quit the band for what he needed. So its sad The Rev died but the timing for this collab couldn't have happened with this drummer who was faithful to his band for 30 years. It woukd have been cool to hear The Rev do a DT song with them but I have to wonder how welcoming DT would have been of that idea.

I still remember the night it was announced that Jimmy "The Rev" Sullivan had passed away. A7X has been my favourite band since I was 9 years old, I was 14 when the announcement came, and it was absolutely soul destroying .He made me want to play the drums, I'd just started playing about a year and a half before and had my first real drum kit 4 months before and had finally JUST learned to play the song that made me want to pick up sticks in the first place (Beast and the Harlot). It was utterly heart-breaking, I'd watched every behind the scenes video I could find, listened to all their albums on repeat and not only admired and was inspired by his talent as a drummer, singer and songwriter but also loved seeing his hilarious, over the top personality, particularly in their making of the self titled album documentary. I felt like I'd lost a member of my family, which might seem silly now, but it does feel like that when someone you look up to so much passes away - I felt a similar way when Chester Bennington passed in 2017, and I still get those feelings of hurt whenever I listen to So Far Away, Fiction, or Save Me to this day - and that's all credit to the band for pouring the feelings they and all their fans had at the time. It's been 11 years since those songs were released and they still hit me the same way they did when I first listened to them at 15 years old.

And don't even get me started about how hypnotizing his voice is 😍🥰 I've only been able to see them once and so sadly to me it was after The Rev died, his death hit me so hard and absolutely shattered me.
@scottboland24193 жыл бұрын
Perfectly said from a fellow drummer. The Rev was A7X and they haven't been the same since. His drums were very influential to my playing style as well, but his drums made the songs for me. As every fill was perfectly placed and leaving to the next riff. Mike Portnoy was probably the only one that could have played the songs as The Rev would have played it.

You are correct, however to add to that - most of the what you hear, not just the drums and guitars but the lyrics too, were all pieced together from recordings and sheet music they found all around Jimmy’s house after he passed. Rev was in a lot of emotional pain but he had a condition that caused him major physical pain as well. Apparently he finished the lyrics to the final song in this album, left the studio and went home and drank a "Brompton Cocktail" which is title of a song on their self-titled album. That's the story I heard Korn's Jonathan Davis tell. How he knew what happened idk, but it's sad for sure. I relate to what Jimmy was feeling. I have depression and physical conditions that cause great physical pain and it's too much at times, but I found a reason to stay and that's my granddaughter. There's always a reason to keep living. Find it or make one up and try to be your best self for them. I can't imagine her life without me and I have a mission in life and that's to live for her and guide her for as long as I can. I could never harm myself now. Not a possibility now. If you're feeling like I used to feel, stop and imagine your loved ones missing and needing you, but living without you when they need you most. Do what you gotta do to fix your life. It's never truly hopeless.

I love how you're trying to relate the songs in this album to the five stages of grief because this is exactly what it was to them: a coping mechanism for Jimmy's passing and yes, he was only 28 when he transcended. If you want to hear them going the anger stage of grief I recommend giving God Hates Us a listen, be warned though, It's kind of a throwback to their Sounding The Seventh Trumpet/Waking the Fallen days. And I really really *REALLY* recommend you react to Fiction. The song was originally called "Death" but the band renamed it "Fiction" after one The Rev's other aliases. This song gets particularly emotional if you know the backstory to it: this is The Rev's swan song. The last song he ever wrote in his life. He turned the demo in saying "that's it, that's the last song for the album" and 3 days later he died. The band reworked the lyrics to honour him and even managed to salvage some parts of The Rev's vocal tracks and included them in the final song as a sendoff. The first line "Now I think I understand how the world can overcome a man" is double tracked by The Rev and Shadows, the chorus "Not that I could or that I would let it burn under my skin/let it burn!" and one of the last lines "Hope it's worth it here on the highway/I know you'll find your own way when I'm not with you tonight" are all Jimmy's vocal track.

You’re spot on with the meaning. This song was written about the rev most likely, and it’s also a great song for just the meaning and journey of loss. Losing anything at all. A dream, a loved one, an old toy, anything. It’s about overcoming that obstacle of loss and going on, in honor of whatever you’ve lost, or to make up for something if it IS your fault.

I discovered A7X when this album was released.. I dove head first into their music and anything I could find about Jimmy. Listening to this the first time without knowing exactly what occurred in their world I could hear their pain.. listening to it every time after knowing their loss.. still chokes me up. Knife master & stallion duck. 🖤💙

Being a fan since 2003 it still blows my mind that these guys grew up 20 mins from me. Blessed to be a southern California metal head and have gotten to hangout with them down here 🤘🏼

I appreciate your pure reaction to this song. It is absolutely one of their best. I lost my three brothers and mom in the last four years. This song and "So Far Away" have helped me cope and given me voice to my feelings. I love A7X for that, if for nothing else.

The most beautiful creation from avenged and late the rev

Abstract song structure. It's almost like the song is building up through a downwards spiral of emotions until we finally get some relief at the very end. Confusion-->Lost/Running-->Crying out for help-->Strength/Relief. They do a great job of expressing these emotions; it must feel like being in a whirlwind. Especially with creating a song after The Rev passed with some of his material. I'd feel like I was actually the tornado. Thanks for showing me this one. Cheers!

This is my absolute favorite Avenged Sevenfold Track. An underrated masterpiece, all 10 minutes of this song are worth listening to. So much emotion behind the lyrics, the instruments are constructed beautifully and the pacing of the song is just perfect. Even if youre not big on a7x you've gotta love this song.

Thank you for this! Man the way you connect to the lyrics is insane! I own and love Nightmare the most I got too impressed by the instrumentals to hear the message. god the Rev had such a huge influence on the band it’s so nice that they gave him Nightmare as an Ode to him! 🤘🔥

There's plenty more on Nightmare, Hail to the King, and all of The Stage to react to. Dealer's choice I'll watch em all. That said, there's another song called "Save Me" by Shinedown that you absolutely need to react to. If you've heard Dio's "Don't Talk to Strangers" then you're already clued into how Shinedown's lead singer Brent Smith sings on some of their songs. Actually, MONSTERS is a really good example and you already reacted to it. However, that song alone from ATTENTION ATTENTION is only 1 part of the whole story. I strongly suggest doing a full album reaction in one sitting cause it's a concept album about a character that starts off ina hellish place but comes through in the end.

Apparently The Rev wrote the part "we only wake up when we sleep" as well as "tonight we all die young" but intended that to be the beginning of the song but the band couldn't work it into the start.... I think he did a demo of his voice over the whole song originally

This all album is a piece of art. Save me is just awesome and always makes me cry because is beautiful. Matt's voice is everything, that man can express all his feelings through his voice.
