And Odin in his prime was above the power leven of Hela, so go figure. And Surtur, once he got to the eternal flame was never defeated. Also Thanos was lucky the avengers where all over the place when he attacked while so many stones where suddenly found on one planet. Add to that that he also had to wait until he had an idea of where the soul stone was. This only happened when Nebula went after Thanos trying to kill him and was captured.

I do like how Strange fights - he's a Doctor, and he took an oath to do no harm. So, he doesn't attack to wound or kill. He captures, binds, transports people to different places, supports what his team-mates do, deals with side problems, looks into the future, makes bargains and in extreme cases he directs the harm others do back onto them, but he doesn't do direct harm. That's likely part of why he pushes himself so hard, and throws himself into magical study. Even when fighting someone as dangerous as Thanos, he wants to be capable enough to defend himself and others and end the fight, without having to use deadly force.

This is some of the best attack designs in cinema. I love how rather then just shooting different colored beams at each other (like we see in Harry potter, or alot of movies), Thanos and strange have a back and forth of EXTREMELY unique attacks that continually cancel each other out. Turning a black hole into fucking BUTTERFLIES?! WHAT?! this battle could've easily gone on for 20 minutes and I wouldn't have noticed. Also props to doctor strange for holding his own against all 6 stones.

It’s something to note that strange did. When he looked through at the 14 million possibilities, he would have fought thanos, well 14 million times. Imagine playing a video game your first time and dying to a hard boss over and over again. You eventually memorize each move he uses and at what exact time and how to counter said move.

Strange DID use the time stone, to beat Thanos, just in the one in 14 million ways it was possible to do so. Using the time stone any other way would not have worked, or else he'd have seen that outcome and just done that to win. As for why no other use of the time stone would work, I think the explanation is given by the Ancient One when she's talking to Hulk, and in the Dr Strange movie as well, when she warns that using the Time Stone to casually undo things always results in unintended consequences and ruination. Thanos doesn't understand this and he does use the Time Stone to casually undo Vision's death and take the Mind Stone. And the Ancient One's oblique warning/prophecy comes true: ultimately Thanos IS ruined. It's hard to draw a direct line from misusing the Time stone to his ruination, but time is a funny thing and the Time stone may in its own way be the most complicated and dangerous one of them all. Dr Strange himself never misuses the Time Stone in that way; he only uses it to see possible futures, and to create the time loop in Dormamu's alternate reality where he gambled (successfully) that consequences of casually using the Time Stone to undo something would be contained to that alternate reality where Time doesn't even properly exist. And in the end, Dr Strange DOES win using the Time Stone, but using it properly, patiently, wisely, not casually and just for convenience.

Dr Strange got nerfed so bad after this movie. Marvel doesn't know what to do with him. In Endgame he just held water back. In No Way Home he got beat by Peter and left in the mirror dimension. In Multiverse of Madness he didn't even fight with Wanda. It's been stated that she is more powerful than him but he could of outsmarted her with his spells, he's done that with foes who are more powerful than him in the comics. Him and Wanda should of had an intense magic battle but they just didn't, he just gets sidelined
