Because "Goodbye my princess " set as a high standard for both actors, it's difficult to surpass them. So the wise choice is not to pick that kind of same exact role again. They are excellent actors, i hope they can take other characters as well. I see Cheng Xingxu take different genres and still doing pretty well.

I hope they get to pick better projects with hotter ML's to push her more. They can maybe learn a few things from the extremely ambitious Zhao LuSi's company that managed and make a rather average actress madly popular now. "Goodbye My princess" was a surprise hit with a non-traffic actor and it helped put her on the map but unfortunately agency can make and destroy somebody's career no matter the talent (I even heard she was not the 1st pick for the Female lead role in GMP).

It's such a shame because Peng Xiaoran and Feng Shaofeng really shone as actors in some of their other dramas. This one, however, is terrible. I like semi-fictional historical fantasy dramas, but the minute I got to the whole "winged people" bit, I gave up on the drama. There is such a thing as too many fantasy elements in a fictional historical drama before it becomes nonsensical. At least with Goodbye My Princess, they stuck with the one fantasy element of the forgetfulness river.

@@silentstarz16 Well technically it is part of the Novoland world, which is a fictional parallel universe-esque ancient China co-created by like 7 or 8 different authors, which has winged people and mermaids and other magical beings. This drama is adapted from the work of one of the original founders and yeah, that's part of the novel.

I thoroughly enjoyed Goodbye, My Princess so that is the reason why I watched this drama. The first ep with the wolf really sets the tone for the drama in which the director shows how cliche things can get. The slow mo spinning in the air to save the female lead was overdone and also less romantic because of the male lead not looking his best. I can't say if the styling didn't suit him or what but he just didn't appeal on screen. Also, the second male lead didn't add much interest on screen; the wings they added to him looked silly, and that is again the director's fault for bad taste...

So sad for PengXaoRen to be in this drama with the male lead. I've never liked him even when he was young, I have no issues with his personal affairs, and not biased because of his ex-wife. I don't know anything about gossip and ML's personal life, but I just don't like him either and never have (I trust my own instincts always). Also, at least visually (if not in real life) he looks past his prime and she's "acting" like a not so bright teenager/very young adult and I'm not a fan of borderline 30 year age differences...(even if neither of them fall into that category) - meaning his role is based on "young man in his prime" but he doesn't have that look. And second male lead is so pretty (in our first look at him) I thought he could easily disguise himself as female and I would have totally bought it. And he looks too young for female lead (romantic but doomed) interest. It seems a bad mismatch of leading actors...for some reason = Awkward. Overall very predictable.

I was really looking forward to this drama bc I love Novoland (loved Tribes and Empires until the crapshow that was the second half) but the similarity with "Goodbye my Princess" and the unlogical stuff are just too much. I also kinda feel bad for Peng Xiao Ran: of course actors will have certain roles that will be tied to them and people will recognizes them for those roles and compare those roles with others of the actors but trying to make every role of those actors akin to that "top role" they once had just to get viewers watch it and the actors don't really have a chance to make a new "top role" character... See Daniel Radcliffe or Elijah Wood or Romy Schneider: so many people connect them only with their roles of Harry Potter/Frodo Baggins/Sisi... (Sry for any mistaktes, not a native english-speaker)

I felt a little bad for "Tribes and Empire". Seemed like censors made a lot of cuts, perhaps inadvertently making fillers more obvious. It ran out of money either during the production or post production. Felt like production expected dubbing so they didn't bother to capture sound/dialogue right. Eventually, one of the 3 male lead actors pretty much said, "Don't worry about paying me. This was a great experience."

I also felt bc it's adapted from a book they weren't really sure how to tie up/involve all those characters from the books who only have a small but vital role and how to cut them (e.g. that princess of the former dynasty that used and threatened Su Yu Ning so often - and omg don't get me started on Su Yu Ning... I feel bad for the actress but second half of the drama was a crapshow that's all to say there...) Also: couldn't they have already calculated that if you adapt a Chinese LotR-esque book series (bc that's what Novoland wants to be) or in this case just one book of those that you need a certain buget? Especially if you have that many main characters (4 and 2/3 main villains) and characters in general... jeez

@@KeikoArukara Film/drama productions are always subjected to investor pulling out (caused by "disagreements", censorship rule changes, new financial market regulations and etc.) or financing entity going bankrupt (like The Guardian). I don't know how often the entire budget is given upfront. Looks like the listed budget was not high enough to match the director's vision anyway: Around $46 million USD for 75-ep sprawling epic seems low. Not to mention it's also hard to predict last-minute "demands" by local authorities granting filming permits. I think the drama wanted to target more younger male audience. After watching a number of Chinese donghuas also targeting this demographic, I would say that most of them would be fine with Su Yu Ning.

Kudos to you that you lasted over 5 episodes! I couldn't hack sitting thru the 1st one & switched. What I like is that lately more & more Chinese dramas are allowing the actual voices of the actors and actresses shine through. Then there is no " doesn't he sound like ....in the other drama?" allowing me to focus on the actual drama & its characters. It seems some are slapped together to stay in competition with dramas that do extremely well. I find if the drama is too long in episodes, I lose interest and/or skip because some episodes could be condensed & become more relevant. Besides I still work etc., so I like to travel thru more fantasy stories quickly to happy endings.... Thank you! Your observations were on spot with me!

AvenueX rant was funny and accurate as usual. Before clicking I had a hunch the review was heading south. I made it through episode 3 and stopped in the middle, because this drama had no direction and countless unnecessary scenes, like the white bearlike wild cat animal. It seems as though the production team and director intentionally sabotaged this body of work. I liked Feng Shao Feng in The Story of Ming Lan and Starry Night series and was hoping he and Peng Xiao Ran would work in this drama. The older man/ younger women doesn’t bother me at all in ancient dramas. I would think that was how societies were set up, and a large population of men are attracted to younger women anyway.

there's a fast forward button and I've used it often....but I've stuck with it for a few episodes mostly because it gives so many opportunities to scoff - especially all the "clan's" mixed messages about their own Wolf God, let alone the clunky CGI. Also I could never get into Novaland either. As always I completely agree with AvenueX's summaries. Luckily I don't know all the dubbing voices, but the dubbing actors have this habit (particularly the women) of giving little "gasps" every five seconds or so, as though they are suffering from some unnamed respiratory disorder which I always find offputting...

Dubbing!! So agree and I’m quite aged and my hearing is nowhere as acute as yours. Eg I’m watching the fluff piece My Girlfriend is an Alien 2. I enjoyed the first one years ago and, as a fan of Bie, the Thai/Chinese actor/ singer playing the ML. I watch Asian dramas and have heard Bie before. AND as an avid fan of Wallace Chung. This show is just soo difficult. Bie is Wallace Chung?????? It must be even more difficult for others like yourself who is more aware of individual voice actors. Be great if they found a way to do without dubbing. ( I have watched your video explaining the whys) Thank you again for your show. I do agree with 99% of your recommendations and use that as a guide… however I must admit I do enjoy some others that were not to your taste. My hobby in my retirement is to watch Asian film and dramas. Have an enjoyable holiday season and all the best for your New Year.

Immediately watched this because of the actors but first episode I knew something was off. Directing and editing was bad. Not just main actors but even the extras seems to not want to be there (tribal dancing had no energy at all lol). I wish they made a better drama with these two. Makes me so sad because I want to see more of Peng xiaoran. I don't understand how you can say she's popular when she has no work released since goodbye, my princess. 😭. The dubbing usually don't bother me because I don't watch a lot of dramas in a year but boy did the voices not fit the faces and I know what Peng shao feng voice sounds like too; definitely not what coming out here. Sad but I'm watching while internally laughing, questioning, and wondering what they were thinking when this was made just to see Peng xiaoran. 🤦🏻‍♀️

I started watching this drama and I'm still watching it I managed to make it past the first three episodes and I mean it's okay it's not the well it's not the worst drama I've ever watched but I just found like the first three episodes to be really confusing I don't like it when I feel I have to connect the dots but there are no dots to connect. Like I can understand after she helped her princess run away that you know he had her detained but then out of nowhere she suddenly had a fever and I was like did I miss something what did I miss I'm like she was fine like literally 2 seconds ago. And then suddenly they're at war and I'm like I'm like I'm so confused like like I've no idea what's going on I'm like yes he sent people to get the princess back but you think he would have sent an emissary back to her tribe or something to say like she'd run away or she's been abducted to see what they had to say about it. But no suddenly It's like oh the two sides are meeting and they're going to fight and I was like I thought the whole reason for her to marry him was for an alliance that apparently neither of them wanted because suddenly they're fighting. a friend of mine did explain that she thought it was because obviously like the one guy who's in charge of this astrology Department moved that one troop without the emperor's knowledge and the tribe took that as a declaration of war and I was like hey that makes a little bit more sense other than me stuck here figuring out what the hell is going on. And then like well we know a little bit more now but suddenly it's like when the guy the wings guy was moving around and he didn't have the princess with him and he was fine and I was like okay where is his injury? And where's the princess? And although I know that he explained now that he was injured and when he woke up she was gone but it's like I guess he can't know where she would have gone but like the fact that she ate just left him there and didn't take care of him after he saved her and be that he didn't seem to look for her at all? And also like the princess of the tribe is so naive and stupid like she meets this random guy who gives her some kind of explanation for their meeting and then like 5 minutes later she trusts that that who he that he's who he says he is without any validation or confirmation. And that you know like that you know she is considered cursed by her try but she's still been a part of her tribe for like 19 years of her life so when she came forward and said you shouldn't trust him because he might not be who he says he is because I have proof they're like oh well we're not going to believe you because you're cursed and we're just going to believe a guy we met for like 5 minutes I'm like it's horrible to say but I'm like your clan deserves to be annihilated because you're all idiots 😂 For goodbye my princess I actually didn't make it past the episode where she jumped into the river of oblivion and then he kind of like went to grab her and jumped in after her his it just honestly drove me nuts I was like she freaking jumped in to get away from you because you destroyed her clan and then like I don't do very well with abusive I guess relationships and so after that I was just like screw this I can't watch this drama.

A common saying, "A married daughter is like water tossed outside." A "virtue" about a married woman, "Alive, I am this my husband's family member. Dead, I'm my husband's family's ghost." If FL is expected to love ML, she would/should forsake everything and everyone else to pursue this love is a standard expectation. This, when it comes to ML or ML family doing terrible to FL/FL's family, viewers don't mind FL not doing much about it, as long as the leads would otherwise be a good/perfect match/couple. If ML actor isn't such a mismatch in appearance and age to the FL, per idol drama standards, more viewers would celebrate "Love conquers all!" If FL's family did terrible things to ML/ML's family, chances are viewers wouldn't expect ML to act like the above. Instead, they would likely expect FL to betray her family to help ML accomplish his revenge.

I typically have a lot of patience for fantasy dramas since that is my favorite genre, but I have yet to get into most of the Novoland series (I WAS able to suspend my brain enough for the castle in the sky duo). I’ve put this in my “unsure” list but will now move it with confidence to my “not interested” list. FSF is way to old to play the role of ML against such a younger actress. And a mustache does him no favors whatsoever. And the constant dubbing makes me sad for the actors. They work hard at their roles and a good chunk of what they do gets wiped out.

I’m feel like these actress and actors, can be a great role model of acting. But it just that they make the story line similar and suck in it own way, but yea true. Agree, and hope they rethink when they are gonna make a new drama coming out. And don’t force it to finish it fast as for only money, like yes it for money. But taking it time for the plot like of the story, will make it a successful point of the drama beginning to the end. Not sure if I’m correct but thank for reading. And I’m so agree with your ranking. Plus it so disappointed to see these actresses or either actor to play waste of story line drama, when we all expect to watch them to play good successful story of drama as well.

Yep, that's when I quit as well. When they showed the 2 females stupidly waiting in the middle of the arena for the wolf instead of hiding, I knew these characters were not too bright. Didn't want to torture myself so dropped the drama right there!

I love peng xiao ran but all her dramas after Goodbye my Princess has not capture the same attention, success, and chemistry with Chen Xing Xu. She was a late bloomer in the industry but I guess I’ll just have to keep an eye out on other future projects from her. Because her recent dramas are just NOT IT 😢 and Feng Shao Feng is getting too old for this type of drama. No offense but the 2nd male lead would’ve been a better option for this idol type drama.

I love Peng Xiaoran and will watch the drama to support her. I can’t wait to watch her and Ryan Ding’s new drama. Hopefully that will be much better since the male lead is close to her age. It doesn’t matter if he’s a bit older or older and very handsome like a glass of fine wine. I can’t see any chemistry between her and the current lead in this drama.

I can't normally differentiate who's dubbed or not by even I could tell that these characters should not sound like that. their mouth movements weren't even in sync! and the visuals were horrible tbh. I could only watch to episode 3...

Watched because of Feng Shaofeng. If I knew the dubbing actors and recognized their voices I would have the same problem listening. Your knowledge and observations are spot on. I am sad that actors I have enjoyed in the past subject themselves to this kind of story. Another thing that bothered me was the scale of the interior design and the weird tents. I get it it is supposed to have some fantasy elements. I have only watched 3 episodes and I am done.

And I am also more bias because of Zhao liying. She is the best female actor this year. Several of her dramas that aired this year are bomb. So after their divorce she has more attention on her career and she is living a better life than feng shaofeng.

@@ayagokenyam1345 not sure thats true. Theres always "false reports" when there is a CP and they are not allowed to deny the hype as part of their contracts. Some of the "camps" ride on the hype too much Johhny Huang kept throwing Dilraba into the wolves. Some FL have come off worse off and MLs camp had to stand up for FL when it gets out of hand (Bai Lu and Xu Kai). But as part of sponsoring the CP is sold as if its real. And some naive people always take it as real. Reputation is everything but some stories can never be untold and FSF has come off worse of.

Well agree with you..for idol drama visual is a must..even I and my friends who are with aunty age..we still expect young romance visual drama hahaha..and as you said mr. Feng is an uncle by now, not suitable anymore for idol drama..he should look for project with more mature audience

I “discovered” him in Ice Fantasy so I was interested in this, too (I thought he was an evil character in this, not the ML!) But his agency or he, himself, should have known he cant get away with playing younger dudes anymore.

talking about the dubbing, many years ago in Thailand, there will be only 1 voice assigned for each character. So, we will know right away who is the lead actor and actress because of the voice dubbing. LOL.

Agree with you. It's not a drama but a mess. There's no storyline, there's no tempo. They juz doing whatever they want and not interesting at all. I watched it because of PXR but I can't take it anymore and give up.

I have watched 5 episodes and this is what I get: *Goodbye My Princess x Yanxi Palace. *Both ML's do not play well off eachother!!!! Like, at all! *It feels like FL did not put any effort in - like they were all forced to do this, and she keeps missing her cues/standing points. Makes scenes so choppy. *I only tried watching this because of William Feng. I actually have switched to KD's for 2 reasons: #1 Cannot listen to the dubbing anymore.... it's just ridiculous! #2 Under the CCP, the creativity keeps getting recycled in a SMALL fishbowl, that I cannot watch another rehash of a rehash of a rehash! PLEASE go watch Arthdal Chronicles, Alchemy of Souls, Korean Odyssey instead! If our Chinese actors want to be challenged maybe go to Korea or Taiwan! I hear William Chan is filming in Taiwan right now. *I really like William Feng in Ancient dramas, so I may just watch the last episode to see if it worth bashing my head against the wall for William Feng, lol.

Hi, I went into this drama becoz of Feng Shao Feng, but I was put off by firstly, the wolf attacking the people was poorly portrayed. Second, the fact that everyone else is running away except two girls just standing there hugging each other is mind bugling. The when they decide to run, one trips and falls down, again, she sits there for a while waiting for the wolf to attack her and then like you said out of nowhere a man appear and the two have a moment meanwhile the wolf was again waiting for them to have a moment. Thirdly, the ML decided this is the right to teach the FL fighting while the wolf was attacking. The whole lot of that scene was just so wrong such that it left me questioning whether I should continue watching the drama or drop it. 😭😭😭 Probably I will put it aside for now and search for more interesting ones.

The wolf scene did feel ridiculous from a modern person's perspective but it also did make sense from the people's perspective Those people appeared to worship the wolf as a god but they also saw the animal as a fearsome beast that could kill them if they got in its way. And yet also I found their logic of being angry and blaming the FL for causing the wolf's death to be illogical in the sense they saw the wolf as both good luck for their clan when it was alive but conveniently used the wolf's death as a further excuse to be prejudice and reinforce their beliefs about the FL being a bad omen.

I watched it because it seemed like it would have more colours than I had seen in a while, and because the description made the leads' relationship seem antagonistic. I have to admit that FoeYay and somewhat yandere male leads are my weakness, even if I am 100% aware this is extremely unhealthy in real life, it is a guilty pleasure. I was fascinated by Story of Yanxi Palace's leads because of how they began by hating each other, not just in a funny way, but unhealthy, dangerous. Even as they grew to grudgingly respect and like each other, it was just something in the tension there (I think it also helps that, most of the time, the Emperor AND Ying Luo never prioritized their love for each other over the country, so there were few moments were they would go "but I Luuuuv her!" when everyone wanted her gone (I mean, HE was the one who wanted her gone most of the time, lmao). In some way, I think I am looking for that kind of relationship again here, which is one of the reasons I am tolerating the illogical and stupid parts of the show so far, because I feel like the Emperor here is sort of the same, he likes her but prioritizes other things. I do agree though that so far, the female lead is a bit too passive emotionally to even TRY to rival Ying Luo, so most likely I will give up if that does not change. I feel like part of the reason I like villains loving/"loving" the heroine is that it forces the heroine often to take more action than what they might otherwise do, but that is easy to fail, as well, and... mostly it falls short for me. I tried to watch Goodbye, My Princess, but I could not get through it, the mood swings did not quite work for me. Perhaps I should give it another shot. I do appreciate the friendship between the FL and A'Rui in this drama, though. Perhaps because I passed the episodes with A'Rui in it by shipping the two women, because they were both so beloved by the other.

Ive wondered why they don’t use voice coaches? We have British actors play Americans all the time in Hollywood and you can barely tell-if at all. Is it just easier to dub?

I forced myself to finish it. It definitely is the worse drama I've watched. Even cheaper production dramas had better plot and characters.
