As a rural postal customer, I find the Mr. McElroy's dismissive statement about rural service offensive. As a person who has been around for 71 years, one thing I have learned is that nothing every happens the way "experts" predict. When things are purposely changed to "improve" them, it almost ALWAYS ends up making things worse. Over my 71 years, I have seen virtually everything in America turn from great to pure crap. I have never seen anything improve once the govt gets its claws into it. That's been my observation over the decades.

That's because the USPS is so heavily subsidized, they actually lose money in delivering items. So, while you feel like you're getting a better deal sending things via the USPS, its ultimately costing you more. UPS and FedEx have higher prices because those companies have to operate in the real world.

@Timbrock1000 while I would usually agree that gov shouldnt be involved I do see the mail as something vital to our country and to a lesser extent our democracy. I would point to how poorly USPS is being managed, the deal struck with Amazon was basically a corporate give away where it costs more to deliver Amazon packages than they charge them due to a really bad contract. They also spent a ton of money unnecessarily on changing their fleet over to electric vehicles. I would also point to the lack of services provided by private companies in rural areas, they state its too expensive. Removing mail services for rural communities would be devastating. Its a tough one but I would at least wish to see USPS be given a shot with competent management

@@offgrid1356 Amazon for the most part delivers their own items. The USPS has for at least the past couple decades operated financially in the red. If FedEx or UPS did that, they'd be out of business . Several other countries have privatized their postal service. We should do likewise. As for rural deliveries, more and more rural post offices are only offering residents PO boxes, no longer delivering to the homes. One huge peeve I have is that there's no direct competitor with the USPS because it's illegal for anyone to do so.
@offgrid1356
@offgrid1356 13 күн бұрын
@Timbrock1000 estimates are we lose $1.50 on each amazon package, they just renewed the contract, substantial numbers of Amazon packages are sent through usps and are given priority over regular mail delivery. Thats just one example of poor decision making. I would say that deal was and act of sabotage, as was the requirements that usps be able to cover pensions 20yrs in advance, something no private company is required to do. It absolutely could be run effectively for the good of all Americans and American small businesses that rely on the service. That being said, I have yet to see an example of gov being able to manage any service effectively so maybe my argument is moot on that point alone

There are already privatized versions of the post office. They are called Fed Ex and UPS. Anyone can mail a letter through Fed ex. It will cost you $20 instead of 0.70 cents. The post office is a service. The service is mandated to deliver to every address regardless if doing so results in losing $. It can’t be ran, compared or treated as if it were a private business and the sooner the politicians with an agenda understand that the better.

Right now your mail carrier is a union worker with healthcare and other benefits as a positive incentive and the threat of the postal police as a negative incentive. You force them into Amazon like conditions to make profits for faceless shareholders and you might as well never send anything of sentimental value through the mail again. What ever negative thoughts about the USPS that you have right now gets a million times worst and more brazen because instead of 1 mail man that you might have for decades, you get a revolving door of soon to be burn outs. As had been said, the Postal Service is a SERVICE, not a business. You need to look at other countries that have privatized their Postal Services. Most have not done well. This idea was floated a few years ago, also with a question "Does UPS or FedEx want it?" One said a "definite no", the other was "no comment". The rural piece definitely needs to be addressed, especially since USPS does last mile deliveries for FedEx and UPS already. The electric vehicle piece is difficult. You need someplace to charge the battery. Many of the properties used by the Postal Service are leased. As it is now, some offices have vehicles left overnight unattended. Do you want a bunch of electrice vehiclfes hooked up to chargers unattended? Some of the Members of Congress seem to want to "eliminate employees to profitability". The work with the current work force in some areas isn't getting done, including with overtime, both long shifts and working off days. How do you intend to get the work done with fewer employees?

Not their fault, congress mandated the purchase of the EVs and provided them with the money to do so which then saw Dejoy award the contract to a company that he very likely stood to make a massive profit from due to the contract. Oshkosh didnt even have a working model ready when they were awarded the contract while other companies had models that were ready for production immediately. Not to mention *someone* bought 50 million in Oshkosh stock the day BEFORE the contract was announced. Greed by upper MGMT at the USPS and lawmakers completely stunted the entire process.

Most mail is taken in by the post office on Thursday and Friday. Mail must be handled on Saturday, or it would pile up for 3 or 4 days, and even more mail would get lost. My family was a mail contractor. We delivered and picked up sorted mail twice a day from all the post offices on our route. Mail for years moved on Sunday too, one pick-up and delivery that day, and the system got less efficient when Sunday was removed from the process. USPS required us to get a truck 2-feet longer so we could carry more mail on Monday. Cutting mail service on Saturday would just mean more temporary employees would be needed on Monday and Tuesday to sort and deliver mail, and get the job done, plus larger trucks would be needed to carry mail those days, at greater expense to USPS. There would be no savings from cutting out Saturday.

@@tguf456 McElroy is an automotive journalist, but not a very good one. He should not be considered an expert. He thinks he is, but real auto company people know he isn't. All he cares about is getting paid, and will say anything to get a paycheck. For example, he talked about unfunded liabilities for personnel costs. Federal law was passed in 2022 to fix that, and he is uninformed. The change takes full effect next year. I've known him for years. I worked and retired from an international automotive company. However, in general EV's are a bad deal from a cost viewpoint.

A perfect scenario for the classic "bust out". Private equity swoops in, sells the massive inventory of postal buildings, eliminates non-profit, library and other "gift" rates, and raises the price for a letter to $1.
@ayamasakya4196
@ayamasakya4196 25 күн бұрын
First it’s a “buy out” not a “bust out”. Please take the time to know the difference between those two. The postal service doesn’t own any of their buildings. It’s all just rented out. Raising prices is not to change anything. DeJoy did already raise the prices but he is still the massive failure and a fraud.

The USPS is like an alternative to whatever other private companies we have out there. I have seen many customers said it’s too expensive with USPS and went to UPS or FedEx only to end up running back to the post office. It’s a cash business that a lot of companies want to get their hands on. They would run to take over the metro areas that has low operating costs with huge margin while leaving the rest underserved or prohibitively expensive.

There are enough chargers and no permit issues for the Ford vehicles, right? The problem is Oshkosh is too small a company to handle the cash needed for this contract. The government pays upon delivery. Oshkosh doesn't have the cash to lay a bunch of parts in warehouses, that would wait in inventory while they build a few vehicles at a time, to then deliver them to USPS to get paid and start the cycle over again. They may get faster, but it will take a long time to deliver vehicles because Oshkosh simply does not have the cash to build these faster.

no, the government needs to implement a new fee on every online invoice generated by businesses, and every online bill payment made by consumers back to those businesses, to make up for the postage loss that was caused by internet computers. Revenue is the problem, not the postal service itself. No organization overhaul would correct the internet taking away USPS revenue. Prices have increased because computers have taken away mail volume. New transaction fees collected by banks and credit card companies would be paid to USPS, to put their finances back in order, and then stamp prices can come back down.
