Great video. I use my HX5/3 raptor for all fish/tuna over 50lb and my MXL raptor and MXJ MC for all fish things under 50lb and that's all I need. The reasons I use these reels is because they get the job done and their size and weight-great for small hands and women.

I know you're fully aware of this but I think it's super important to distinguish between Raptors and G2 when talking line test as well. You really want to stay in that 25-33% drag of your line test or you're going to blow out bearings or worse. Putting 80lb line on an SX Raptor is ok but on a G2 SX it's way too heavy. It's basically doubling the drag on a Raptor. I fish my G2 MXL and my MXL Raptor very differently for example. 40lb on the G2 and 65lb on the Raptor with up to a 80ln topshot. Avet has a reputation for their bearings going bad but almost all the time it's due to people fishing the reel way beyond its intended line class. If you want to catch giant fish on heavy line with a small reel, spend the money and buy a Raptor.

That is a good point but we are also doing it for other reasons going straight braid is way different than using mono tops shots especially with these reels then everything you said is on point... as for the hollow core braid we doing it because the ticker lines give more abrasion resistance as well as the thickness is comparable to the smaller mono sizes.. at the same time we dont go too thick cause then you will loose line capacity

@@TeamHardLife I just see guys with a standard SX with 80lb braid and they complain about crunching a bearing. We always use a reasonably long, say no less than 50 feet of a heavy mono topshot when sharking from land. Even the sand over here will cost you fish if you let it rub on lighter mono for long enough.

@@jeffsmith825 You do realize that you're not hurting anything by putting 80lb line on a regular SX right? As long as you are staying under the listed max drag ratings of the reel. You could definitely say it's pointless or a waste of money but it doesn't hurt anything, you just lose some line capacity while gaining a little abrasion resistance. You said "you really want to stay in that 25-33% drag of your line test". Well that's really not an accurate statement. What the 25-33% rule means is.... "ideally" you don't want your drag to exceed 25-33% of the size line you put on your reel. It doesn't mean you are supposed to fish within/around 25-33% of your line size. You can spool a regular SX with 130lb braid if you wish and you will never blow out a pinion bearing, as long as you stay under the listed max drag specs for the reel. Fishing at 5-10% of your line test is even better than 25-33%. I think you probably understand that but it was worded a little weird in your post, everything else you said is spot on....

@Jeff Smith the reason is also too keep the cost of spooling a reel by the yd is also keeping their cost down on spooling it... We have seen where the 40lb line cost most than the 60lb and there isn't a tremendous amount of line capacity difference between these smaller reels so if helps them by getting into the braid game and lasting longer in the spool...and trust me the bearings have zero to do with the size of braid you put on the reel ... Will be posting a video later on to discuss this further...

@@TeamHardLife I understand exactly what you are saying, I used to do a lot of beach sharking here in Fla., West coast. Pre and post braid invention. Todays small lever drag reels are fully capable of fishing line tests way above yesterday’s gear, but be smart about it. Like an engine, you get a midsize and push it hard, and it will start having issues before a bigger one that never had to really rev up. And could if it had to for a while without any trouble. I fish an Avet SX Raptor 2-speed, max drag rated 26 lb. Its spooled with with 500+ yds of 30 lb PowerPro, and for snapper and slow-pitch jigging, it’s never set past 20 lbs BY A SCALE, at max., and usually 15 lbs. With a 15’ to 100’ leader/topshot of 30 to 50 lb. floro or mono, I’ve landed 20+lb Gags and small AJ’s with no problem.

When I was looking and saw them all it's just what u fishing for.. and if u like compact reel with line or reel with bigger drag but compact like the J series or just a big reel with lots of line and big drag for the big fish.. because I got the sx raptor but before I got it I was looking at the mxj and the mxj hold almost the same line but the sx is wide reel smallest of all avet and the mxj is just a slim version of the mxl that hold line more but got turn to a different looking sx reel

In your experience which mc reel has the longest casting distance. I know alot can be tweeked such as line size, and rod length, stiffness, ect. And another thing is that I fish the pier alot, and alot of guys have custom rods and avet mc caster and most of the time I cast a nice 10 yards farther than they do. But I am thinking its there line type, leader length, and shape of their baits. Along with casting style. Not many cast straight overhand like I do. They tend to side throw with the hips and I use my shoulders and back. I learned it from beach bomber.

Well that's gona be a hard one.. cause jigging for fish and land based shark fishing pretty hard to mix the 2 .. however the hxw Raptors can do both if you dont mind the weight of the reel while working your lures... but at the same time it doesn't give you much line capacity when your using kono at that point then you would have to go with a bigger exw series reel.. but wont be good for jigging... too heavy seen guys do then with the 30's. But they dont last too long..

Well there are ugly stick rods (>$100) that are reasonably priced but probably won't give you the action your looking for.. then there are the ($200) Vexan Tank rods that will be able to get your monsters... then there are the really expensive jigging rods $300plus

Would the mxl raptor be a good surface iron reel? Ive mostly used star drags for surface iron but when you hook something big you got no power in the reel with single hs ratio. I figure with the 2 speed and cast control it'd be perfect for bigger yellows or bluefin

These reels are definitely multi task reels the raptors series does making landing large fish easier but definitely remember offshore fishing and bank or over fishing are 2 different set ups .. the mono filament tops shots really change the whole game up..

Generally speaking if you're having a hard time casting the SX then you're gonna have a harder time casting the larger reels. For some people the LX is the largest reel they can cast and for other people they cast HXW's, 4/0, wide 4/0 and 6/0 no problem.
