Aviary update: Cautiously optimistic about Orange-Breasted waxbill chicks

This is an update on the breeding season this fall, with a great vantage point to watch chicks grow up and leave the nest.

Dear Echo's Aviary ; what a lovely and Lively place to have different kinds of aviary's with beautiful finches in them 💫 I loved the way you filmed the couple of gold frosted finches and their breeding behaviour 🕊 💬 I must say you got quite Lucky that they even wanted to breed because i had them once to and they just wouldn't breed 🤔 probably i thought due to the other type of finches but what i d8dn't knew at that time but thanks to you that mysterie of the past has been solved because i heard you talkie about that they are indeed quite tenacious for their size. And now i know that it must have been the couple of gold frosted finches who probably were responsable for throwing out eggs out of the other finches nests. And now as i look back in retrospect they must have tried to steel the other finches their nest to breed in. But their tenacity got so worse that i had to place them in another smaller aviary but they still never got to breed. But as i have been watching your video you have more aviary's in a quite a big room. For now i have really enjoyed this video and i'm going to watch more of your video's but than with other type of finces in them. Time lapse digital photography are your friend, excellent video quality too. OB waxbills are some of my favourite birds, hope they continue to do well & thank you for posting their progress.

I kept these many years ago. Loved them then and love seeing them now. Unavailable here in Spain atm, but probably my favorite bird of all those I have bred. I still love my gouldians, but seeing these again, I would swap !

Omg they are so cute with their baby plumes😊 Have you ever seen interspecies courtship behavior? For example the goldbreasts and their closest relative the strawberries?

I have never seen it between any of my species even though they share space frequently in the aviary and flights. I am sure it does happen as hybridization can happen by accident or intent.

I don't breed birds but I worked in wildbird rescue. The rule was we never use housefly larvae. They can carry clostridia and often do, including the one causing botulism.

very likely you will need eggfood, sprouted seed, and tiny mealworms unless they can forage for other live food in their space. African finches are very different in their care of chicks from Australian in that they feed primarily live food for the first 5 days and then continue to depend heavily on it until chicks are close to fledging. i check and replace eggfood and live food every 2 hours/6 times a day the first week, then every 3 the second, then every 4 the last. first thing in the morning and evening feedings are the most important not to miss but they do need to find live food continuously all day which can be hard to figure out how to do.

Hi Michael, somewhere there is a video called “what kind of finch won’t make you crazy”. Probably in the playlist for first time finch keepers. I highly recommend watching it to help you understand what species might be best. I have had bad experiences with the Finchfarm so have never successfully ordered any from them. Maybe try Paradise Aviary or Lee’s exotics both in Florida. All of the large flights from prevue-hendryx that I use have castors and are moveable, even when combined side by side as I do. They also come as kits so can be taken apart and moved easily. Check them out on amazon
