Pretty much binge watching all your vids (dec 1, 2021) Love them. Very informative. As for airline english, I watched your more recent video where a near miss between a United Flight and Easy Jet - where American English idioms are used a lot by US pilots - they also need better training for standard airline english. Also.. locally, there is a small airport training a lot of chinese students who its been told to me come here for training and speak NO english at all - and yet training. Also heard from a couple of international piolots that said when flying over china can be a problem because they want to communicate only in chinese.

I totally agree with you. that's mainly why I'm in the states studying aviation. I felt confident before coming for training, but Atc is what worried me the most, and now I feel really confortable using English while flying. Enjoying each one of your videos. Take care !

Good point about staying with a English speaking family or taking training in an English speaking country, where you will not be tempted to retreat to your native tongue in off hours. Academics refer to this as "Immersion Training".

As a UK born citizen English was not an issue for me but being married to an Arabic/French speaking Tunisian who has come to live and work in the UK, I have seen first hand how much difference it makes in the quality of English for someone to immerse themselves in the society of the target language. If you feel your English is lacking, try to get to an English speaking country and spend a few months there as a minimum, you will absolutely notice the difference.

As an American talking to on the radio while flying is difficult for us. My hat is off to all people learning this! I am a student pilot and talking on the radio is difficult for everyone. Just take it slow. It comes with time and practice. Just like flying skills. Coms are some of the most difficult to learn. Just apply yourself and study hard. You will get it. Maybe we will fly together on a 777 one day?

I am not emplyed in the aviation industry, not even anything related to it, neither am I flying - I am just interested. But I can absolutely second that learning English in an English-speaking country is the best way of doing it. I am German and during my teenage years I spent a couple of weeks in the U.S. and it helped a lot. Today I am working for the German branch of a U.S. company and have visited our headquarters a few times, communicate with the colleagues over there almost every day and it feels totally natural for me, even though I still live in German and of course speak German as my primary language. It feels so natural that sometimes I read some texts and don't even pay attention whether they are written in German or English... :D (And yes, I do understand what you're saying, so even with all the issues that kept me away from flying, *this* is no problem.

Late answer, and I'm only an aviation geek, the only things I fly are RC planes. I do work in in an industry that has English as a de facto standard (software developer), and I have never felt like that. Learning English just came naturally since a lot of movies and games are in English, and in the university everything except a couple of introductory courses the literature was in English. Learning quantum mechanics in English makes sure you have the language learned well :D

Challenger747 can you move to USA or other English speaking place for a year?
@windbreaker57
@windbreaker57 6 жыл бұрын
Challenger747 - My suggestion, consistent Petter's, in the video: (1) find English-speaking friends at work and interact with them only in that language (assimilation principle) (2) listen to English TV/radio programs and read English print materials, e.g., newspapers, magazine. I suggest newspapers or trade (airline) materials because the content would be surely be more relevant to your daily life and, therefore, have a greater chance at being retained; (3) have an English dictionary or download a mobile app on your mobile phone so you have a ready reference each time you encounter a new word. And I suggest, each time you do, consult your dictionary ASAP; that way, you get and retain the meaning and the pronunciation more easily because the time spent between feeling the "need" and getting the "answer" is made more immediate, and; (4) ask your English-speaking colleagues to correct you or make suggestions on either the proper or more appropriate word or phrase, and find a way to use them so using them in the correct context becomes second-nature to you. Good luck, my friend!

No but it is an asset to have a pilot licence combined to TESOL or CELTA certificate. However, as far as I know, a TEA (Teaching English for Aviation) training along with a TEFL, TESOL or CELTA or any other teaching of English language credential is perfect. The TEA training is offered at Mayflower College in the UK and other schools in the UK and in USA. BTW, no Aviation English teachers' training available in Canada.

+Natasha Stojsic The only on-line English courses I know are TESOL, CELTA and ICAO English for aviation Level 4 to 6 but so far nothing about on-line TEA (Teachers of English for avion) and English for aviation examiner. This said, perhaps a regular Level 6 ICAO course couple with Teaching certificate and experience is ok to enter this profession. Check the market to make sure. Best regards.

This should not be a problem from pilots from Low Countries and Nordic countries since English is drilled into their brain at a early age. I know this sounds like an arbitrary idea, but the way I understand it is, if there is a minimum level of English proficiency, it must be 8th grade level (age 13-14) plus Aviation technical language. As much as anyone enjoys the position of being proficient in more than one language, and as much as every pilot thinks that their mother tongue has something that English does not have, it is best to keep the mother tongue inside mother's home (or their home) because aviation communication is all about consistency. I hope that sounds right.
