THE LOUDEST TAKEOFF EVER | MiG-21 Bison | Indian Air Force

CAUTION: DO NOT USE HEADPHONES. This is the loudest takeoff ever filmed by me on camera. Yes I have filmed MiG-27 earlier which roars equally as the MiG-21 but as I was very close to this one, could feel the vibrations very evidently, not just in the ears but also on the ground.
It was more like a dream come true to watch this bird roar and pierce the sky like a rocket.

The MiG 21 was the first aircraft I flew as a 22 year old when I was commissioned. Have great memories of flying around on day and night patrol sorties. Retired as a TACDE instructor on the MiG 29s. Now flying A320 as an examiner for a living since But still miss the MiG 21 . since 2007

Fun fact about the Mig-21. It does not have nosewheel steering, nor does it have toe brakes on the pedals. It has a free castering nose wheel and a brake lever on the stick. Turns are made by pulling the brake lever while pushing the rudder pedal in the direction of the turn, which allows for differential braking on the main landing gear. So when he lines up on the runway, you can see him jab hard left rudder in order to stop the turn, otherwise it would just keep spinning around in a circle.

It is being replaced slowly but steadily by thr IAF. Will soon be phased out entirely. But to keep it relevant, I think many upgrades have been done to it in the mean time.

This is a heavily upgraded MiG-21, known as the MiG-21 Bison. This aircraft has Helmet Mounted Display Sight (HMDS) that allows you to cue your high off-boresight Close Combat Missile (IAF uses R-73 and ASRAAM) providing unparalleled dogfighting capability (its a MiG-21, remember). . Believe it or not, not a single fighter jet in Pakistan Air Force inventory has HMDS. And this is the state of the fighter jet that Indian Air Force is about to retire (only two more squadrons remaining in service).

@Prestallar Bruh india gave many proofs including radar proof how f 16( my favorite aircraft) was shot down. Us and pak may not have good relationships but for the sake of the f 16, they made false statements and trying avoid market losses. I know it’s weird but iaf mig 21 is every different from other countries mig 21s, iaf mig 21 is upgraded to 4th gen technology which gave better advantages plus using skills which f 16 couldn’t. If it su 30mki shot down the paf f 16 then nobody won’t reject because it is proven in air exercises .

And besides Like I said earlier the India’s mig 21 upgraded to 4th gen fighter with modern avionics like f 16 although the design is Cold War era but avionics is not that’s why iaf called it as Mig 21 Bison not fishbed. I don’t ignore fact about sneaky attack which you are saying but there is no way in iaf mig 21 able those stuff against the modern f 16 because the pilot have seen the mig 21 behind and started doing circular dogfight.

@Prestallar Whatever you said is true I highly agree with that, that f 16 pilot which you are talking about is highly inexperienced and he was flying in trainer version of f 16 which means that pilot was a rookie pilot and didn’t even know what to do in dogfight. Paf is a joke in movies, they look like they are better but in reality it’s all false they don’t even what is the best range to fire a missile and second thing, they don’t fight even though they send 24 paf jets against 8 iaf jets still don’t fight because of losses and shame which paf always want to avoid.

@Prestallar lol, didn’t you heard what Former Air chief marshal said in press 2019 paf didn’t cross Loc at all they were about to but when iaf jets came in to intercept f 16s only fired aim 120 in dmax( maximum missile range) and turn cold( going back) but iaf su 30mki dodged those missiles easily by using thrust vectoring and deploying flares and chaff. Iaf have gave restrictions to iaf jets not cross border which all jets follow the order but one jet mig 21 Abhinandan went in and he was searching for the target and that’s where he found f 16 and dogfight started, like I said earlier iaf mig 21 Bison is upgraded version with Helmet mounted sight and improved cockpit with those advantages plus don’t forget high alpha. Another thing that like you said why he went because properly paf wanted to the f 16 to do recca mission or tail end Charlie. He got shot down by R 73 missile and if you asking that paf showed all 4 missiles and claiming that he didn’t shot down f 16 let me tell you this is false. If you check second right side of r 73 it was totally destroyed by burns because of warhead explosion. And The biggest question which I like to ask: Where is the second pilot who was in cmh hospital and why did pak didn’t gave a pic if they showed pic of Abhinandan who was wounded. I am sure that after few years later, some random retired paf will come and say that in 2019 iaf have actually shot down f 16B trainer version.

Evidenced by numerous exercises during the 1970s and 1980s when Vulcan's "bombed" the USA - when the USAAFs F4s and F106s could not catch it. Point interceptors, like the Mig 21 wouldn't stand a chance of acquiring the mighty Vulcan.

That IS loud. But the loudest I ever heard was the McDonnell F-101 Voodoo. Those two J-57s with afterburner had a “hard light” that sounded like the aircraft exploded...twice. It’s long gone now. So the Bison keeps the prize for greatest hearing loss potential. Cheers!

lol he just pitched up then retracted the gear and just like that he was airborne. Not safe though, because if he just lost a tiny bit of lift, he would've impacted the runway with the afterburner lit. One healthy explosion would occur lol. Looks very sketchy to me the way he took off lol. Almost like the aircraft didn't want to takeoff. Like the Russians: "Pay the whole runway, use the whole runway". This bird is OLD though.

@@chesterwang3070 the problem with Mig 21 is the delta wing..it doesn't want to get off the ground..designed as a supersonic interceptor, it's a small aircraft, small wing with no lift aiding devices like slats n the profile as such.. The pilot has limited visibility to the front..can't pull back much on stick for T/O or landing as it will stall immediately..a mig pilot looks to his left or right to get a visual cue wen he rotates for T/O..

That's why my point is they need to extend the runway. You also state that MiG pilots look to his left or right to get a visual cue to rotate. So there is a person standing on the side of the runway telling him when to rotate? idk plz tell me cuz I'm clueless on russian procedure.

need of the hour is to replace mig 21 ASAP ....tejas were supposed to replace mig 21 as interceptors ...but congress govt .shelved tejas programme ..late manohar parrikar revived tejas program.. . thus the delay ....that apart, under present government ,the tejas rollout is slow from HAL ...also a certain political party was playing politics on rafale and HAL ..rafales are not supposed to replace mig 21..the roles are different ..had HAL been burdened with manufacturing rafales aswell ..mig 21 replacement would have been poatponed atleast 10 years to where it stands now

The loudest military aircraft I have ever had the pleasure of being close to was probably the B-1B Lancer. Other honourable mentions that come to mind are the Vulcan, F4 Phantom and the surprisingly loud Panavia Tornado. I love them all and the louder the better!

Mig 21 is badass cause it changed the game . It one of earliest extremely successful super sonic Jet. It caught the eye of the allies at that time. Which gave USA better motivation. Most produced super sonic jet in aviation history. Coincidentally, 15 years ago to the date, the MiG-21 (NATO reporting name: Fishbed) had defeated modern American F-series aircraft in a mock combat exercise, sending shock waves through the American defence establishment. In the space of just 13 days, at the Cope India exercise held at the Gwalior air force range from February 15-27, 2004, Indian pilots notched up an astounding 9:1 kill ratio against the all-powerful US Air Force, dealing a massive blow to the myth of invincibility of American air power. Sadly due to over extension of service life and depleting no. Of squadrons , Alot of crashes and bad names have been attributed to her. But it's not her fault. I hope this 30 year old dream of making or own fighter jets comes true in all aspects including production rate. So that we become the airforce our country and prestigious Defence Forces deserve. Wish for the same for Navy and Army. Obviously now it's time to retire this beautiful lady as she is out of time and 65 years old. But she will ever be the one true legend who was the best when she started it and a Dark Knight in the end.
