Get what you can afford and make music quickly. I also avoid the fuck out of plugin review sites and elitist audio channels. Too much distraction. At some point, you will figure out what works for you as a producer and mixer and engineer. So...stick to those things and bonus points if you use the cheapest, easiest tech available. Used Cakewalk until it became SONAR and ran almost every version of SONAR until 2013 when I started using Reaper... Reaper to this day, and it runs circles around anything else that I could benchmark against it. Reaper supported common hardware interfaces and maintains low latency with ASIO drivers. I lost my recording space and now most of the gear is in storage. It was a good run, but I never saw the benefit to spending $25K on additional computer hardware for Pro Tools like my friends. I still have an 18-port Focusrite interface in a 4-sp rack and can take my tracking studio and microphones anywhere necessary.

If you don't want to upgrade, you don't have to. On the other hand, if you have a subscription-only DAW and your subscription expires, then you can't use it anymore; you're dead in the water, unable to work on existing projects and unable to create new ones. Been working as a professional composer and producer for 12 years for some of the biggest clients in the industry. They had us use Pro Tools in uni and it was clear from the beginning that this was not the platform for people who want to write music as well as mix. I have been using Cubase for 90% of those 12 years (10% was Logic 9) and never had to look anywhere else for my professional/creative needs. And yes there have been times when the system was pushed to its limits but there were easy ways to manage this (indeed special thanks to Chris Selim for more than half of those tips). Never saw the need for Pro Tools, still can’t. Big ups for the upfront and honest video.

I’ve been at this for a long time - not that how long we’ve done this matters; that doesn’t mean anyone is wrong at all. I’ve used PT since it was two apps. (First used Cubase on an Atari, as it was with Logic, which was then Notator.) It is absolutely true that PT’s MIDI had been historically Spartan. No doubt about that. But PT has some things going for it even now - simplicity (maybe it’s just my familiarity with it but it’s got to be the most 1:1 DAW in terms of what you want to do with MIDI and audio - it treats them the same for the most part. It has the easiest manipulation of tempo, terrific key commands and functionality, Beat Detective, ARA2, an extremely flexible marker system, my preferred method of fade creation and editing (and I also use Cubase and Logic Pro and had used DP for several years), and sample-accurate sync when you need it. It has deep integration with good control surfaces. It’s ironically dicey for video, to be sure, which is why I use Video Sync for that. And yeah, it’s too expensive compared to others. On the other hand, predictable DSP amounts and very low latency make their excellent-sounding hardware pretty appealing. In the post world it’s ubiquitous because of many reasons listed above. You don’t need to run it in order to deliver cues to a stage or music editor. But I will also say that in addition to having worked on a ton of records with it and a ton of movies and tv shows, you can also absolutely use it with a large template for composing to picture. I did an animated series in PT with a very large template and it did beautifully. I used Composer Tools Pro at the time and also made use of the markers to have show-hide groups of instruments, similar to visibility agents in Cubase, and the process was very streamlined on a very heavy show with tight deadlines. When working in Cubase, it’s terrifically customizable and with MetaGrid Pro it’s great. But some things just take more time to do. And since Cubase is at heart a sequencer that does audio and PT is an audio app that does MIDI (one can say this given the age of the code base in Cubase in particular), there will be things that lean those ways. I’m always sorry having to do lots of editing in Cubase - I just don’t like it as much. But I let my Ultimate subscription lapse and got Studio instead - in part to be able to address old sessions -and got a Mac M2 Studio Ultra and a Lynx Aurora. It’s been great. Less about available DSP, not much at all actually. Latency is pretty great. I live in both worlds and also have clients who use Logic Pro so that’s there too. But PT is great for tracking and great for mixing and I’ve been happy with it across giant sessions with tons of VI’s. To me it’s a question of preferring the editing and needing to support old stuff. Can’t say I would blame anyone starting out if they laughed at PT and went with Cubase or Logic or Studio One or Reaper, and didn’t tie themselves to a series of yearly expensive renewals. I like to say, if one can’t make something musical with whatever one uses, that’s not the fault of anyone but the user; and also you’ll make your best work in something you like. 😢

I use Waves plugins live in Superrack Performer on a Mac Mini M1 with a RME Digiface Dante. Luckily I can do without a subscription. This solution has a tiny bit more latency than a Waves Server, which would have cost me a lot more. Yes, you can DIY Waves servers, but not with Dante. Now the thing is, once you've established such a solution, you notice that it actually would also work without Waves. Other live-oriented plugin hosts do exists. It runs any VST. The only thing that is really impossible to replace is Waves PSE. There is no alternative, sadly. I don't use Waves plugins in mixing of recordings in DAWs. Too much hassle. Also licenses are strictly for one machine if you're not a subscriber. Now if I'd install it on three machines even, I wouldn't be using it in parallel since I have only one brain and two hands… so Waves wouldn't lose a thing. But I just don't need it anyways.

I had nothing but problems getting it to play nice with my brand new PC and other programs. It crashed all the time and I got new-learner discouraged and made no progress with this hobby for a year. Then I was surprised by a renewal charge, that's my fault for auto subscribing to renewal, but dang, that they didn't give me notice they were going to renew ticked me off. So I switched to Reaper. Wonderful program. Love it. When finale called it quits, I had to decide what I was going to migrate to for my musical scoring program. Avid owns Sibelius. Guess which program wasn't even to be considered as a replacement? Finale was another program that wouldn't play nice and was hard to use, moved to musescore. It's 10X easier to use and does all I need. Avid can go rot.

There's no interface with a buffer of 64 that can achieve sub 2ms latency at 48kHz. I've been fighting the battle for years and, like you, came from TDM, then eventually HDX, which was WORSE latency-wise. There are two groups of people that do audio, those that are cursed an have high sensitivity to the comb filtering latency causes, and everyone else. 2ms is that line in the sand. The Lowest latency possible on a native platform at 64 samples buffer exceeds that 2ms mark. It's actually about 3ms without even adding in the conversion delay. I'm glad you're satisfied with higher latency audio. Lots of my clients are as well. Some are DEFINITELY not, though, and neither am I. I'm one of those cursed to be hyper sensitive to the comb filtering. Now, that all said, HDX is only capable of that WITHOUT plugins. TDM, on the other hand, can do it with any HD series interface and multiple plugins.

Just like you I was a Pro Tools Accel, then TDM , and HDX user because of compatibility with others working in the industry, when Pro Tools 11 came out I started using Logic Pro more and more since it was just my artist 95% or the time working with me. I sold my Avid gear and never looked back. Logic was $199 in 2013 and in 2025 I haven't paid 1 single upgrade since! Reaper, and Logic are about the best values for DAW software out there!

This is such a breath of fresh air. I went in circles asking what the "Industry Standard" had over my DAW of choice. In the end, not a SINGLE thing. The DAW I use (and how I use it) is lightning-fast and I just stared, puzzled at the PT tutorial videos like, "Ok but WHY would you do it like that?" I'm already editing by the time PT is up and routed. The whole PT/Waves behemoth seems like its own era and rightfully so, but it's like so many industries right? Better things come along. Tech evolves. Glad to hear an honest perspective.

It was crazy in the 00s when Protools and DD were required for people to take you seriously. People who knew nothing about it, but just wanted to come and record would opt for other places if a studio didnt use Protools. I was certified in PT in 02 but after working at a studio that used Digital Performer, I never used PT on my machine again.

Every other class used Pro Tools or Avid for video editing, he asked the school to put Cubase and Logic on all the computers. It was amazing. I could get around Pro Tools fine. But Logic and Cubase were so much easier. They were so much more inspiring to use. I use Studio One now and get that same feeling. Anything but Pro Tools at this point. We own most of the DAWs for compatibility with clients (Studio One and Logic are favs) but honestly the zero latency of our HDX Pro Tools is key for tracking large sessions with DSP plugins, and the DSP for 16 channel routing to headphone mixers, again, with zero latency, is handy. Sure, we could do it with our large format console but it's a pain. We might use Reaper for live remotes for its stability, but instead use Metric Halo's DAW "Session" because it's equally or more stable and the routing for headphones, etc is superb. Metic Halo's DAW "Session" is deadly.

I own Studio One and will probably try out Logic as well. We'll see how the "feel" is on Luna, but from everything I've seen on KZbin and other reviews, it looks like it will do everything I need and has a lot of the same shortcuts and setup as PT.

I started using Steinberg in the Pro-24 days on the Atari. When Sound Tools became Pro Tools and multitrack, I moved. I spent years on Pro Tools, culminating in working as an engineer and defacto IT department for a multi-room post studio complex in central London. I still used Cubase for some of my personal jobs for a while but when Pro Tools became MIDI capable I kinda let those skills wither. When I moved on from that role (as I moved away from London) I continued to work with Pro Tools in my project studio in the converted attic of an old shop terrace building. When Avid decided to move to a subscription model, I made a hard decision - I was mostly doing other work (motion graphics and video work in Nuke) in semi-retirement so a subscription model just didn't make sense, and when I did the numbers, it turned out it was costing me a lot more as well. I never used Avid support, even in the HDX days as I found it awful and the people I'd deal with knew less than me. What is the point of this overlong story? I moved lock stock and barrel back to Steinberg too. Nuendo, because I was doing a lot of stuff to picture. I have one thing to thank Pro Tools for - because Pro Tools began as an audio only platform, it gave me a different way of working to the standard Cubase/Nuendo workflow. The Steinberg products are flexible enough to allow me to use my Pro Tools muscle memory (and key commands) to work the way I had become used to, using audio as my baseline. Sure, I use VSTis but I like to commit early and by the time I'm mixing, it's all audio. It's not a big deal to make changes but neither is is completely trivial as it is early on with MIDI and this focusses my mind in the same way that working to multitrack tape used to. Workflow is king, IMO, and everything is so flexible I've found that defining my own way of working, my own limitations in some cases, gives me the best results. I love Nuendo, and recently audio editing on the main timeline has had an update that removes the final thing I missed about Pro Tools. Industry standard? Yeah, OK. But as was said, there isn't much of an 'industry' anymore. Not in the sense of industrial sites with multiple studios. I got lucky in that I moved to post production for cinema and TV once the big-iron music studios closed down or became waxwork clones, used mostly by ripoff Audio Engineering Schools plus the occasional 1970s or 80s rock star or band. Moving to post at least meant I still had a job in a studio as the record industry collapsed in on itself, but I was very lucky.

Why would anyone bother with Pro Tools, Reapers costs $60 and can actually do FAR more than Pro Tools. There is 1 reason and 1 reason only to have Pro Tools now, and that is because a lot of established industry people use it, that s literally the only reason. Some folks will turn their nose up, but that's cool, they can go pay $500, I will go pay $60 , get a more stable, far less CPU intensive, ALL plugin format options, multiple Video editing capacities, every single function you have in Pro Tools and every other DAW for that matter (Reaper is like the Linux of DAW systems without compatibility issues) You can even make Reaper look and shortcut like Pro Tools. As one person posted, Cubase is so '90's. Studio One is a lot slicker, in a lot of ways. One thing to worry about when moving away from PT, is equal delay compensation across all tracks - otherwise you'll have phasing issues. Reaper, e.g., doesn't seem to have gotten the memo. S1 also is lenient about copy protection, has a lower price than Cubase; and you don't have to be opening and closing windows so much. More than 8 fx/track, anyone? That's just begins to scratch the surface with S1. I can only hope the S1 pricing and policies stay similar now that Fender has taken it over; because they have a really good product on their hands, IMHO. It reportedly has even fx delay compensation across all tracks, like PT, but unlike Reaper. I admit S1 can seem hard to use at 1st, but then it gets easier, and other DAWs then seem clunky.

I remember going completely ITB with Logic in about 2004 with no external DSP, just an external PCI-based interface and recording with software monitoring. Admittedly I wasn't recording huge numbers of tracks, perhaps 8 max, but I was astonished how well it worked, how much software was included, how cheap it was, how much fun it was to use (except the dreaded "environment"...) and how well it played with whatever interface I owned. At the same time, I witnessed other producers with *functionally inferior* setups running on super-expensive computers with super-expensive DSP and super-expensive interfaces. All those people got financially COOKED when their gear needed replacing and I just couldn't understand their loyalty to go and REBUY it all!

Your description of Avid is a textbook example of the predator - prey relationship. Eventually, predators consume so much prey that there's no more prey to feed the predators. Then, this impacts the predator's ability to survive. You can also see it happening in society, where people in general (the prey) can no longer afford to buy the things that enrich the predators. Avid has followed the same trajectory. It wouldn't take much to get the company back on track, but whoever's pulling the strings doesn't seem that interested in making it happen.

To be honest, I want the subscription and paid updates model to go away, but I want PT to stay. Here’s why: As a DAW PT has come a long way though “coming a long way” had much to do with catching up- but hey, the other DAWS that met up with PT as industry standards had some catching up to do as well, so it’s a nature of the competition sometimes. Compared to the other 3 DAWS that I use (2 of which are also “industry standard”), PT is still more solid for working with very large sessions (length and track count) as well as alongside film projects. I may use other DAWS for beat production, some recording sessions and mastering, but when it comes to heavy edit sessions (especially when you need clip-based processing) PT does it like no other in my experience, and I can say the same for mixing audio sessions that are 30+ minutes in length with track counts over 100. The layout of the mixer and general workflow is the best for the way I like to work with audio.

I’ve been running Pro Tools ultimate/ HDX on a Mac Pro 5.1 using Martin Lo’s open core package. The most stable system I’ve had, it was like getting a new computer. I’ve been trying for the last 3 years to upgrade to silicon, the 5.1 system still is capable of massive mixers using Softube, UAD, plugin alliance etc before adding DSP to the mix. Tracking with HDX is seamless. I also run vsts, albeit only about 10 before things get crunchy on the old 5.1, but nevertheless it still works. I am hoping to upgrade to a Mac Studio M4, as I am writing more and I feel it’s now time to retire the the old Mac Pro 5.1, but what an incredible journey over the past 15years. Without HDX this wouldn’t have been possible. Prior to the 5.1 I was upgrading computers every 2-3 years to be able to run new software. After the latest ARA and Midi updates, Protools is looking like it’s heading in the right direction…..finally! I come from a Cubase background.

Hey Barry, bear with me it might be a long comment. I started music on an Atari with Pro24 (which became later Cubase version 1.0), so long long time ago. Then I got a job where I had to test all DAW, it was part of my job to try to break them, find the advantages and disadvantages of all… so I pretty much tried every single DAW you can think of beside DP and Bitwig (I was already doing another job when Bitwig really started to become popular), so I won’t speak for those two, but I know and tried all other you can think of, Cubase Pro, Logic Pro, Protools, Ableton Live, FL Studio, Studio One, Sonar, Reaper, Reason, Samplitude, Akai MPC Beat, NI Maschine, and probably more I can’t recall, that’s only the few that come to mind right now and some of the ones I have currently installed on my M1 Max MacBook Pro… I used to work in studio, so I had to learn Protools, back in the 2000-2010 years, it was necessary, even for small independent studios. Fast forward to 2025, nobody cares about what DAW you’re using in your (home) studio. They are all perfectly great professional tools, if you learn them right, you can do 90 to 95% of the work, they all do the same. The only 5 to 10% difference will be on some specific features… some DAW might be better for audio recording, others for mixing, others for live performance, others for Composers, or EDM, or Songwriters…. But in the end of the day, the best DAW is the DAW you know the best…. Pick your poison. After testing all those DAW, my main issue is that I often mistake shortcuts,, using shortcuts of one DAW while I’m in another one.. So it’s not great to always switch over and over, because with age, our learning capabilities decline..So now. I decided to stick with only two (Cubase Pro and Logic Pro),, not because it would be the best, but just because it would be the best for ME.. I’’m also tired of Avid policies. And I hate subscription, so I get it. And share your feeling.. Dear reader:: To each ħis own,, feel free to pick any other DAW of your choice,, as said it doesn’t matter.

PS: I also have to disclose that I’ve been beta-tester and participated to some development to some of those DAW, including beta testing for Apple, Steinberg, Cockos (for Reaper pre 1.0), NI, etc… that’s also why I got many of those DAW as NFR. But as of today, even thought I still maintain some dev contact, share ideas, etc… I don’t do any testing for any company as this moment, so my comment is my opinion and only my own.

Yeah, I agree…. Sometimes the only fact to know an app (Avid or else) could be enough to stick with it even if there’s a “better” app somewhere else. An audio engineer that has been on Protools for all his/her life, that is VERY proficient with it don’t want to become slow and ineffective with a new app, even if the new app is “technically” better for them. Also, if you have to open some old projects, you might want to stick with a known system… this is true for Protools, just like it’s true for other app or even OS. For instance, I’ve been on PC almost all my adult life up to 2008 when I switched to Mac because all studios I was working with were on Mac with Protools. So I switched to Mac, and now I just can’t stand Windows anymore… I’m just like MacOS more. Does it mean Windows is bad? Nope, not at all… actually the recent version of Windows are actually pretty good and you can make a Windows PC to run just as well as a Mac… and it will very likely be cheaper (or way cheaper if you build it yourself). But if you’re used to MacOS, it will be a hard pass, even if you dislike Apple policies (just as much as you despise Avid policies). That’s why I said “pick your poison”. Nothing is all good vs all bad… If someone pretends to “know the solution”, or that s/he found “THE” solution, then they’re either lying to you or lying to themselves. At best, it might be the less worse solution for them… Also, back to Pre-2010 I would say there was no question, if you wanted to be “professional”, working as a medium size commercial studio, or being recognize as a serious producer, you had to have Protools, it was THE industry standard, because all big studios were working with Protools, all big names were working with Protools, all engineers you would hire would use Protools… But since 2010, we saw a shift in the music industry where more and more people are just building a real studio at home. We’ve heard since the ‘90s about the “home-studio”, the notion to be able to make music at home, it really started with electronic music… but back then, even home studio were not perfect and couldn’t achieve the sound quality of a real professional studio if you had real instruments (drums, guitars, bass, singers, strings, etc…). So it was a home-studio. But since 2010 with progress in technology, better converters, better and cheaper mics, preamps, etc… and with computers powerful enough to replace a Large Format Analog Console (FLAC) by mixing “In-The-Box”, we slowly move from “home-studio” to a “Studio at Home”. The huge difference is that in a “studio at home”, you can finally achieve the same level of quality in music that you would do in a multi-million dollars professional recording studio with all the high-quality (vintage) gear we could dream of. With Convolution reverb, with outboard emulation plugins, we can now have the same result in a nice studio at home that we would get in a professional studio. So we don’t need to exchange files with studios, engineers, labels, etc… we can do it all from the comfort of our home… so the kind of software we’re using becomes completely irrelevant, we’re Kings and Queens of our own kingdom… Also, with high-speed internet and social media, we can also become our own label, distributor and marketing… that’s why more and more artists are independent, they have nothing to gain from big labels anymore. Previously big labels were paying in advance for studio time, but they don’t anymore because not only they want “demo” songs to be ready for Primetime, so all the work is already done by the artist when s/he would approach labels… and they don’t even take any risk anymore since they will only sign artists that already have some following on social media… That’s why the whole music industry is changing… not even mentioning all new technology (AI) that makes it “easier” for artist to make music… you can also have easy access to talented worker over internet. You search for a graphic designer for your album cover? You can hire someone over the internet… you don’t need to label to do that for you. So, artists become more and more independent… which also mean not being dependent of a specific software they wouldn’t like. If they hate Protools, there’s nothing that stop them today to spend could have bucks to use another DAW and their music won’t sound bad, or sound “less professional”. Of course, if you’re working in Post Production for Hollywood, you might still need to use Protools… but even then, it depends. For instance, for Composers, it’s well known that A LOT of them are using Cubase Pro because of people like Hans Zimmer that has been a huge mentor and advocate for Cubase… Sure, in the end, they still deliver stems in Protools, but that’s only to deliver the music, not to make it. If the only person you have to “deliver” the music is yourself, you don’t need to go through this extra step of using Protools, you can stay in Cubase Pro (or another DAW). Long story short, music industry is changing and will change even more drastically with the forthcoming of AI… I would predict that music will become less and less of an “Industry” because there will be no money to make for “middle men”… I believe the music will slowly shift back to go back in the hands of artists. I’m not worry for the music, it will continue to exist, music will always exist in some ways… and there will always be music performance in front of audience. But every other “music jobs” like recording engineer, mixing engineer, label director, publishing companies, etc… I’m not sure they will survive. We’ll see… and that’s also why I would be sacred if I would be Avid since they clearly place themselves on the tiny 0.001‰ of super elite entities on top of the music industry pyramid… while some companies will be doing good because they’re aiming at the mass population, music beginners, etc… Anyhow, I’m rambling at this point, but yeah, there’s multiple reasons why today (in 2025) there’s absolutely no need for a specific software to make music and anyone can make perfectly good quality professional music using whatever they want… some of them won’t even use any computer and any DAW for that matter and it would still sound awesome. Let’s never forget that in the end of the day, it’s not about technical details or gear, it’s about the love of music… cheers!

Gotta be honest I use Pro tools because that’s what I learned on when going to film school. I do music production now as well and I tried Logic and Ableton for a couple years but when I tried Pro Tools again some second nature and memory just made it where I flowed better through sessions. I do hate the price but it’s just a platform I learned on and I guess I’m kind of afraid now to try new stuff. I also don’t know (that’s a clue that I have to research I guess) how many people are using other software for audio film postproduction. I know a guy that uses Logic but when sending to the mastering engineer or even the mixing engineer they will use pro tools but maybe it’s just cause the same reason that they’re old and used to it. Quite a reflexive video for me, maybe I’ll dedicate a day or two a week to start learning something like reaper. thanks for uploading

I figured out back in 2012 that PT was a waste of money. Been on Cubase ever since. 😊 I remember when Digidesign said they would never make a PC version of PT but then the industry blew them away and all the sudden PC version.😅

20 Years with Pro Tools. Their response to me from simply not being able to log into my online account for close to a year was "you can still upgrade pro tools on Avid Link". That convinced me to pull out my calculator for multiple licenses. Now with Reaper. FL Studio is inexpensive for beatmakers no pay upgrade. Reaper is $60 with no pay to upgrade. Logic is no pay to upgrade, but I have to pay for new OS/Computer after a while to use the latest. If someone needs a Pro Tools session or I have to recall one, I suppose I'll rent it for a month.

I’m so glad I decided around 2003 not to go down the PT route. While I probably could have done better than Cakewalk Sonar, Reaper changed all that around 2012vish. Like instantly!
