I have only had one instance of a kid drowning and it was in a larger trough at 2 weeks old when they start jumping on everything and it was taller so that they could not see over and into it. They jumped in and could not get out. I've never left type of trough in ever since. With these size buckets it's unlikely and my buckets are in hangers (new additions this kidding season) that keep them up off the ground (too high for babies 6 days or younger to jump into). I don't remove them when we leave, water is more important to have access to at all times than food is. Not to mention mom teaches them to drink water so it does need to be accessible to them to learn what it is. I do work but I work from home and check cameras often. Goats think of only homicide and suicide all day so there have been some freak incidents but only one drowning and my trough size was to blame (I now put cinder blocks in larger troughs that are accessible to my entire herd when we put babies in with the herd so they can get on them and jump back out if they for some reason jump in.). I clear nostrils and mouths when I need to but if they are shaking their heads (the natural way lively babies clear their own airways) I just wipe fluids off of faces as soon as they're born so they don't have a chance to inhale fluids. For really bad blockages we use a lamb resuscitator which is in my kidding kit just outside the stall. I do always clear teat ducts (in rapunzels recent video I verbally say that I had) but I rarely film it anymore along with dipping umbilicals (my earlier kidding videos seem to show it more) I always do it but even if I didn't I would know within hours that the kid is not getting milk or needs something because they get VERY loud and incessant. But naturally wax plugs dissolve with warmth and moisture which a healthy kid wanting to nurse will do. I've been kidding and raising goats for over 10 years and some "norms" I've learned are not mandatory and there's about 100 ways to 1 task... whatever works for us is what we stick with. We learn a lot each year and some things we adopt into our management practices and others we discard. I'm bad now for focusing on caring for the kids and once I start drying kids I'll stop filming for a bit and I just don't capture the mundane and repetitive parts (at least they are to me). It's hard to make sure you film and give the same explanation 20 times in a kidding season but I never take offense to questions :). If you don't live it and do it everyday how could you know? I'm always happy to answer questions :)

Thank you for answering so thoroughly. I did see the next video where you said that about the teats and also I noticed your buckets where on backets attached and off ground. I know everyone seems to do things different. I do love the way you edit your videos. I can see where saying the same thing over and over with each birth is not necessary. I could tell after I have watched several more how experienced you are. Sorry, I tried to edit and take out my inexperienced questions, but you caught me. :/ Stay warm and safe.

I use those heat lamps and a baby monitor. I would like to get cameras as well but need ones with their own Wi-Fi. I think your set-up is perfect.
@MulberryBranchFarmАй бұрын
These are Blink cameras that we got off of amazon and they have an extended range that sits in our house using the wifi but that makes it to my barn (finally a camera that reaches!!). I added a baby monitor after this birth and I love it! Happy Kidding Season!

I don’t winter kid it is always spring with exception of one when our buck jumped the fence and got our Daphine. That was a January baby.
@MulberryBranchFarmАй бұрын
When we raised Boer Goats it was always winter kidding to hit the best market for kids but I will say winter kids here grow MUCH better than spring kids. No parasites, no coccidia, and they're always ready for fall breeding where as spring kids are a toss up and need a lot more preventative measures. But you do have to stay on top of it in the winter to make sure they dry off fast enough and get fed.
@66danetteАй бұрын
@ I never thought about the parasite issue. Hmmmm I guess I will have to think about that now. lol

It definitely has pros and cons but always do what works best for you! We kidded out yesterday with 14 inches of snow and single digits... I was questioning my decision then let me tell ya lol!

Not gonna intervene and let her do most on her own and then pull the baby right out of her
@shontaemeyer3257Ай бұрын
Then don't let her even clean
@MulberryBranchFarmАй бұрын
Thanks for commenting! I appreciate your observations and Guilty as charged and that was the plan. What you CAN'T see is a baby presenting mostly head first with just a hoof peaking at the jawline... totally passable but my experience with first time mommas (at least in my barn when I didn't intervene) the more pain and work they put in the longer it takes to pass the kid the higher the chances of shock and you gamble that they'll even accept and bond with baby. She did the hard work, I just helped in sync with her pushing and breaking membranes to relieve pressure. 2nd baby presents the same way so why not help? Also it was very cold, baby MUST be dried as quickly as possible to keep them warm enough to nurse and consume the all important colostrum (below 101 degrees babies usually won't and shouldn't eat). She obviously is cleaning them while I clear the nose and mouth and focus on keeping them warm and alive. So in your scenario.... she struggles longer, more pain... may go into shock and not even attempt to clean her babies in cold weather... resulting in me NEEDING to intervene or they possibly die. Forgive me if I prefer how this birth turned out vs your possible scenario. She's healthy, babies are healthy, and it was a successful birth.
