Subtropical Fruit Garden

This is an update on my avocado hill 10 months after planting.
The planting video is here: • Planting avocado trees...
The avocado trees: Reed and Lamb Hass (with Kona Sharwil grafts) are doing great.
Many different pollinators visit avocado flowers.
We also did a taste test of our first Reed avocado vs. a store bought Hass avocado.
Comfrey Bocking-14 is a good companion plant around the perimeter of the avocado hill.

Very useful key information, including leaving branches low on the tree to shade the ground because of the approaching Summer Sun. And the importance of use of mulch. etc Very nice trees, video documentation and oration, Thank You

Thanks for doing the side by side comparison of the Hass and Reed avocados. (Total weight)-(seed) = (meat and skin). Hass: 207 - 32 = 175 grams . Reed: 599 - 73 = 526 grams. That Reed is huge! .

@@SubtropicalFruitGarden I've been on the lookout for the 'Carmen Hass' &/ or 'Reed' Avocados without any luck.... I've brought the 'Fuerte' Avocado tree down to about 2 feet off the ground this last week... I'm thinking about just re-training the soon to grow new 'Fuerte' branches into a more compact structure. My luck: I planted one of the most vigorous & widest growing varieties -- when I am seeking to keep each tree in its respective growing area. I hope to have another update in 1-2 months.... Charles :-)

Charles, thank you for the update! I guess nurseries are not keeping up with the demand on avocado trees :-) Sometimes you can order avocado trees online. It looks like fourwindsgrowers.com has Carmen Hass available for pre-order with shipment starting in 2 months. They also had Reed avocado (looks like it is sold out).

Gorgeous little trees. I remove all blossoms on my little avo trees because fruiting stunts growth but I'm also in a freeze danger zone so have extra reason to maximize tree growth speed.

What area are you in if you don’t mind? I am also in an area where we get frosts sometimes. I live in Australia in a cool temperate zone in Victoria so I’m hoping where I am I can grow a reed. How is your reed growing? When you say freeze danger what kind of temperature do you mean and do you mean just frosts or snow fall? We don’t get much snow here only like once or twice a year for an hour or two or sometimes a bit longer. But not too much.
@Mrbfgray
@Mrbfgray 3 жыл бұрын
@@NMW80 Both my Reed and Wurtz featured most prominently out front are doing very well, may even let them fruit next time. Around 8ft tall x 5 ft. with 1.3" trunk. They were both in back of my econobox car July of 2019. I'm in low inland farther North California, 9a. We almost never get snow and it hasn't even frosted much in recent yr.s but we can occasionally get into mid 20's, definitely the danger zone. A better indicator of what we can get away with is a number of big established avo trees, not a lot of them but enough to prove a point IMO. You might focus 1st on more cold hardy types first, forgetting the names at the moment but Fuerte (tho it's the only one I've killed out of about 12 varieties, apparently can't handle full summer sun over 100F when young), Mexicola, Bacon, Zutano, Stuart.... I use Phoenix, AZ as a reference too, many big established examples there and mangos too, they definitely get hotter but also a little colder it seems. And don't forget the importance of exact location "micro climate" on your lot.

How many emitters and what flow rate do you have in the large tree rings?
@SubtropicalFruitGarden
@SubtropicalFruitGarden 3 жыл бұрын
Robert Medina, Thank you for watching! Drip tubing has 1 GPH emitters 1 foot apart. The number of emitters depends on the size of the tree. I prefer adjustable sprayers (0-10 GPH). I typically have 1 for young trees. The avocado hill has 4 of them.
