It is usually better to follow industry databases standards instead of making up your protocols, because following those standards would protect you from negligence claims.

LOL at the customer supplied connector. I work on cars for a living and customers supplied parts are just about the same for us too. We had one earlier this year where some guy wanted us to install a snow plow mount that he supplied on his truck. The mount is a piece of junk, bent in multiple places and has had the mounting points cut off and home made ones welded on. It would have taken hours to fix it. Needless to say, we refused that job. Then there are the insurance companies that supply basically the cheapest parts known to mankind and then expect us to give them a warranty on our labor if the part they supply fails... Nope, not gonna happen.

The Sony walkman, where just pressing the play button, the brittle plastic broke into pieces, I got threatened with violence over it. I can totally relate to everything you said there about false claims on repairs. When I was in the trade we also had to get customers to sign something similar. Despite this people will always try and pull a fast one! One day we had a monitor come in that had a red tint fault - the issue was a single capacitor and after replacement it was perfect. They then tried to take legal action claiming the focus on the CRT wasn't as good as before the repair - LOL! The focus hadn't been touched, and to everyone that looked at it after the repair it was good as new...

I own an auto repair shop and this happens in my line of work as well. I protect myself and my employees by doing a walkaround inspection of the car with the customer before I accept the keys and work order. If the car is dropped off after hours myself and another employee do the walkaround and take a video and photos before we touch the car. I think I have prevented a few fraudulent claims this way, and a few times the customer discovered damage from a spouse or child driving the car. If we find other damage or shoddy repair work after getting the car on the lift we document it with video and photos and contact the customer before proceeding.

We'd catch people on security cameras going into the lot in the middle of the night and scratch their cars or dent them in areas that already had damage just to try to get around the picture taking we did. I took it there he checked it and said he had to change the AB panel as the bezel was damaged too (the housing in front of and back of the screen). Then after almost a week later I visit there to check if the work was done only to find that he damaged the power on button while attempting, I considered it as a small mistake n agreed to that as it can be resolved easily, so I wait a couple days and then finally visit to take my laptop only to know that he has damaged the touch pad/trackpad of the laptop. I asked him to replace that too but he refused saying it cannot be done. I wasn't informed of the risk in changing the housing. And personally I don't think that while changing the bezels and hinge the touch pad should have been damaged.

I'm curious, do you have a backup plan if later your hand stability is less or vision is worse or wtv reason and you can no longer do microsoldering anymore? Any plan to future proof yourself by hiring a few apprentices and give them shares/partnership to your business so they'll continue to work with you after you retire?

@ 7:05 You say the customer asked if the replacement power part could be soldered there. There's an easy way to check and that's with continuity. Simply check if those 8 pins match with the original 8 pins. If so then yes, if no then it wouldn't work.

Interesting connector pins. The comment of looking like its not for this GPU makes me wonder if its actually a PCIe 8-pin Molex connector as they are keyed in the plastic in a specific way to stop people from connecting say a 12V EPS plug into the PCIe 8 Pin or vice versa. Although one can do such a thing if they apply the "If it doesnt fit, force it, if it breaks, it needed replacing anyway" logic. Great to know you have a good strong policy to weed out the dodgey people. You do great work, its always very interesting to watch you execute your trade. I'd only ever try to fix my own stuff if I know its 100% can be lost for good (IE: its already replaced and not needed)... But I'd probably raid the NF Store first to buy some equipment just to give myself at least a bit better chance.

So you remove the bulk of the original solder and add low melt? Or was it more of a mixing process? Impressive skills man I'm about to binge a bunch of your videos lol.

He is taking a strong stance of "I do only this job and you pay for only this job" so he isn't testing it as time is money and so more time more money also as he explains at the start he dosnt want to be roped into "free" extra work. So hence the strong stance of "this is all we discussed. All other is another matter"

Are there shops that ‘do’ verify the functionality of a device before working on it and also are there shops that offer insurance ( given that there is risk) ?

I have watched a few of your videos as this was my job back in the days of Commodore 64s and Ataris etc. I have never tried that sold wick stuff, always use a solder sucker, that looks much easier. This customer rip off thing is something I came across in the 1980s, the best one I had was a customer who bought a computer and sent it back faulty for a refund, most places would just do a visual check and refund, but when I looked, he had changed the mother board with an older model! I went to a car audio repair shop about 20 years ago, they had a sign on the wall "Labour £20.00 per hour, £30.00 per hour if you want to watch, £40.00 per hour if you tried to fix it yourself and failed".

It looks like too much heat was used when that replacement jack was removed from the donor board, causing the case to melt and two pins moved inwards.

A little life hack here - when desoldering multilead connectors/components, if you do not plan to reuse the component, cut the plastic part of the component and remove the leads one/two at a time. Helps reduce risk of damage. Mainly useful for people who do not have access to hot-air stations/special solder/flux. Can do this using any regular soldering iron.
