I tried removing a fish from a spear a few months earlier and the wrasse just wriggled and swam off... After being speared... So I learned from that time to kill the fish before removing from spear.

Quick tip if you have your fins on entering the water try walking backwards until you get about waist deep that way you don't have to worry about the waves pushing you back on to the beach and you could hold your speargun in your hand. Just be careful with the loose rock. But awesome job. 👍

my two cents. One, for small fish under 40 to 50cm you can simply snap the neck with your hands or use your knee for leverage, no need for a knife or icky. Second, you can push the spear through the fish and leave it on the spear string and blast away a couple more.

Totally agree there I do the same thing, only have a knife with me for safety now. Bleeds the fish at the same time as well!

you can ike a fish by coming inside with a spear from gills towards brains, also to bleed it but maybe it is better you went back for the knife you never know when you could really use one

Yeah it's not a butterfish, it's a banded wrasse. Probably the most common fish in the south island.
