Thank you, you cover the details that just wouldn’t occur to me. Just an idea, IKEA also popular in the EU, I know it’s probably a pain but some metric conversions on the more crucial measurements would be helpful.

Thank you for your comment. Yes, you're right. As a minimum, I could add the metric value as text for the essential measurements. As a European myself, I had a hard time dealing with inches when I came to Canada 10 years ago but now it's the centimeters that's giving me troubles when it comes to Ikea cabinet sizes 🤔🫢 Thank you for bringing this up.

You said to start installation from the wall. A problem I had with that was that I was fitting cabinets between a window and a wall. I was installing base and wall cabinets and it was always planned to use a 50mm filler on both sets of cabinets at the adjoining wall because of a base cabinet drawer at that end. The adjoining walls were not square and the wall at the start point was not plumb (3 mm variation at 1 mtr high & ~ 7mm at 2 mtr). So I had to begin at the window and work back. The filler ended up being 68mm at floor level and ~ 75mm at the top of the wall cabinets. By starting at the window the out of square wall was not an issue because the benchtop hid the error. This emphasises the need to check and recheck wall variations

Which space do you leave for a 30'' stove (range) ? Someone suggested me to leave 30-1/2'' between cabinets and have countertop overhang 1/8'' on both sides, leaving a net opening of 30-1/4'' ...

Yes, I do exactly the same in most cases.

In regard to the mounting rail and installing multiple wall cabinets, in Australia wall stud widths are 450mm but the IKEA securing recommendation is 300mm. If the rail is secured at three or more points at studs along that rail, the vertical load on the rail at the studs, using long screws should be sufficient to support the weight of the cabinets. Using high quality drywall anchors mid-way between the studs (at 225mm) would be sufficient to prevent the rail from twisting, without imposing additional vertical load on the rail. Would you agree?

With a 36'' wide fridge, which is actually 35-7/8, do you install the fridge cover panels directly against the fridge's upper 36'' cabinet, creating a 36'' space? Or is it necessary to add one (or two) side panel to that upper cabinet, creating a 36-1/2 (or 37'') space for the fridge?
@kitchensbyrannes
@kitchensbyrannes 3 ай бұрын
Yes, in most cases I add the fridge panels directly to the 36" wide cabinets. If the floor isn't horizontal, it can be a challenge getting the fridge in there though as it will be leaning to the side. I always find it more difficult to secure a panel with a free side to the cabinet if there's a ½" panel in between as my normal goto choice of screws (from Ikea) are too short. If there's high cabinets on both sides, adding a ½" panel between the fridge cabinet and the bigger panels is a lot easier as you can predrill and screw all the way into the adjacent cabinet wall. I hope all this makes some kind of sense 🤔

@@kitchensbyrannes Thanks. I'm not sure to understand why the length of screws is a factor; what prevents to simply use longer screws?
@kitchensbyrannes
@kitchensbyrannes 3 ай бұрын
True, that's the way. It shouldn't be an issue but somehow I feel I get a better hold between a cabinet and the panel compared to a cabinet and the panel with an extra panel in between.

This just proves to me Ikea took an easy way out on designing their method of installation. The same method as assembly of their flat pack units. Houses especially in the UK are not built to these strict standards.

Well here I am stressing after going downstairs to check if the corners of my walls are square. I have two 38” corner cabinets and my corners aren’t square. One corner is about 1/2” off and that is the side that joins other cabinets. Lord give me strength.

@kitchensbyrannes
@kitchensbyrannes 7 ай бұрын
If you have a dishwasher next to the corner cabinet, the opening for it can "absorb" some of the problem as the dishwasher space could be slightly smaller at the back than the 24" you need at the front. If you measure the width of your dishwasher at the back, you'll see that's probably at least ½" less wide than at the front.
