I only mulch what I cut from my own trees,plants and other things from my property. Bought a wood chipper years ago and I know what goes into my garden !!

I have been using bagged soil and mulch for years and years, the only issues I ever encountered was bags full of stones and another time was loaded with slug eggs. Other than that, I LOVE MULCH and once it breaks down, great for adding nutrients to the soil. Thanks Jag for the wisdom about bulk mulch.

That's exactly what happened to my tomatoes. I got a Chipdrop and I had disease every year for three years before I noticed that a weed also had the spots and I knew it was from the woodchips then. I had lost half of my tomato plants but I got some Copper fungicide and saved the rest of them.

I made the mistake of mixing some composted alder chips into my garden beds and just like you said the nitrogen was locked up and my plants were looking yellow, had to add a nitrogen source to bring them back. Lesson learned

This has been very helpful to me because I have recently signed up for chip drop. Now I know exactly what to put in the description that I don't want delivered.

I got chipped blackberry brambles when I arranged a wood chip drop. they LOOKED alright, a dry brown color, but actually they started to smell like rotten fruit, and then were full of angry ants. I had to pay someone to haul them away,

Super helpful, Jag. The 3” max thick, And the NOT letting them decompose in a pile first due to potential bug overpopulation. Yikes! Never knew those, ,so thank you so much!

I split wood and have large pieces of bark. I have a very nice garden and don't want to screw it up. Is it advisable to use large bark that came off of green Oak and Ash logs? Thank you.

How about when I want to add a layer of compost to my beds, I suppose that means removing the woodchip first. That's what I usually do but it's almost impossible to remove all the woodchip as some always gets mixed with the soil on the surface. So what to do about that,how do you know how much residual wood chip is ok to leave. I can never find an answer to this.
@DaisyCreekFarms Жыл бұрын
Little bit of residual woodchips is ok. As long as you can scoop up all the big pieces and don't mix those in your soil.

I do mix woodchips into my garden with great results! BUT, the woodchips are shredded, soft wood, no plants are being grown during these 4 winter months, and I turn the soil over weekly with a shovel. By April, the woodchips are decomposed and dark, rich soil is left.

Had to cut out some black walnut trees before they poisoned my other trees/plants. Have to be careful what plants you use that mulch for, I used it for Paw Paw Mulch since they're resistant. Persimmons, Stone Fruits including Cherry and Some raspberry bushes are also tolerant.

Fresh cut arborist chips will break down quickly because they contain leaves, trigs, moisture. Chips allow air flow, essential for micro-organisms in the soil to work on them. KEEP moist, add a little greens or manure to speed up conversion to soil, but it's not necessary. Last, if weeds are a problem, keep the depth at 4" minimum, going up to 2'. If moisture level is correct, not to wet or dry, the level should drop monthly, until the following fall when fresh chips/leaves (shredded) can be added for continuous increase in soil fertility. No composting needed.

Well, i received a (big) load of wood chips in December and now I hear dont put it in the garden it will tie up the nit. In the soil so, i am stuck with the pile( help from indiana )
@DaisyCreekFarms9 ай бұрын
Use it as mulch on walkways and even around your plants. Do not mix in the soil. Woodchips might increase the population of bugs specially pillbugs and earwigs which you will have to mitigate.
@KompleteMan4 ай бұрын
wood chips would touch your tree when used in potted plant... you made a point it should not touch tree

Two years ago I got mine from the city yard, my only source. I think they they came with earwigs. I found a lot hiding in the apple tree socks. Last year I did not see as many... possibly the birds ate them. I see them out there turning over wood chips looking for protein.

Not one word about completely composting the wood chips. The only use you are contemplating for chips is as a top dressing, it seems.

Jag, you can guest lecture at Agriculture institutions both there and in India.. they will welcome you . The younger generation in Bangalore are more interested in Agri and Gardening as i see the trend here in India, of late. Organic produce and veganism is becoming popular among young Indians. Your knowledge will be of more use . Think about it

Can't you just add grass clippings over them to make up for the nitrogen?
@DaisyCreekFarms Жыл бұрын
woodchips only steal nitrogen from soil if you mix them in the soil
@EvolutionWendy Жыл бұрын
I've read a lot about wood chips and want to use wood chips but there is no reliable source here. Maybe because Recology now takes green waste free. I got an arborist to drop chips, but they were chipped blackberry bramble. They looked good, but started to ferment, plus it turned out they were full of ants, and I had to pay someone else to haul that stuff away. Everyone's talking about wood chips but where i live, the average person can't source then.
@ripbbl5053 Жыл бұрын
Here's another mistake for the list: Do not use wood chips from black walnut trees! Black walnut contains a chemical called juglone which most plants cannot cope with.
@crazysquirrel9425 Жыл бұрын
Either I get free wood chips, source unknown, or none at all. Most wood chips are from dead (and usually diseased) trees. About nitrogen issues - I put on a good layer of used coffee grounds on top of the chips. Stealing nitrogen is not a problem if you foliar feed your plants. Stealing nitrogen helps eliminate weeds too.
