Depends on the mission. If you're just using the the firearms to protect your home and family, you dont need all that expensive doohickey crap. Its not going to make you any more proficient and is a giant waste of money. The biggest investment you can make is simply range time and ammo to know how to put lead on target. A $1000 optic and $400 light is just way overkill. Additionally, I think some gun gurus overthink a lot of this stuff. There's nothing wrong with O-Lights if you take care of them and don't abuse them like any other tool. Its literally just a flashlight. You do not need to spend $200-300-400 for a freaking flashlight its not a NASA level tool of major complication. Now if you're looking to get your GI Joe on and bug out and live off the land and escape the Russian invasion like Red Dawn then yes you probably want to invest more money into higher-end accessories -- but for 99% of the population that scenario is neither probable or practical and they simply need a solution to put holes in a burglar in the kitchen at 3am. A $500 setup is going to do that just as well as a $3500 setup.

I've done many classes at other places and it seems that about 25-30% of the new people will have their gun go down, with another 25-30% of those having some kind of day-ending breakage. Fortunately, I bring a full tool kit, extra parts, and extra guns. Classes with people I know to have experience doing classes almost never have equipment problems. They're dialed in. Key lessons for gun class: 1) Running your equipment hard in class will reveal deficiencies. 2) Always, always take 2 or more guns. 3) Make sure you're not taking crappy guns to class. 4) Make sure ALL the guns you take to class are sighted in BEFORE you get there. 5) Take a cleaning kit, bore snake, cleaning rod, and lube. 6) Mags and ammo. Take lots of both. Show up with your mags already loaded. 7) Don't forget the other stuff: appropriate clothing, water, snackies, sunscreen, and a camp chair. 8) If you're going to take pictures, realize there are some of us there that don't want to be photographed, much less be on the internet with our guns. Call it paranoia. Bonus lesson: take your Taurus, modified Glock, or cheap AR-15. Throw it in a lake. Don't take them to class. That crap never runs right. I've seen it time and time again.

@reedr1659 Would you count a Ruger MPR a "cheap AR" or an LTT trigger job Glock 19 a modified glock?
@bringit26126 күн бұрын
@@leckercidre160 in my experience in competition and non-formal training modified glocks, even just a trigger change, become drastically less reliable than their unmodified state. I have heard that of your are going to modify one part on a glock you are gonna need to modify all of it to keep it working. the lone exception I've heard is the glock performance trigger, which makes sense since it's an oem part. Just what I've seen tho so YMMV

The takeaway I get from these types of video's is don't buy into the latest hype, and simple and rugged tends to stay that way longer than not. And I love at the beginning when he said everything breaks, so Very true. For the life of me I just don't understand the desire for cheap sights whether they're optic or 'irons'. Sights like the plastic backup sights by (Any Company Name Here) are just a big NO for me. My two favorites for flip ups / back ups have been Midwest Industries and A.R.M.S. , and for QR optic mounts I really like LaRue Tactical.

Yes ! The place I work, we use a lot of small screws, (M3, M4 & M5). We easily go through a few hundred each week on our tooling. But then, someone in the front office got the bright idea of sourcing chinesium screws to lower the cost and the failure rate instantly exploded. We went back to our original supplier within a month. Cheap hardware makes expensive fails.

You guys got REALLY in depth on failure points and equipment failures that not alot of people talk about, or experience until they RUN their gear. I dont get to train as hard or as often as id like, but i still chose quality equipment that has been vetted and proven by users such as yourself, who have hands on experience with common, and not so common failures.

in fairness to the Olight, if you don't lock the light or the tape switch cap, they will fall off. If you have people who can't even mount optics/back up sights on their gun right, it's not a stretch to imagine they would not know/think to secure their light. I have had Surefire scout light pressure pads come loose at the light just under recoil. It's actually pretty common and people just suggest spending another $100-200 on aftermarket stuff to fix it.. Same for Streamlights. The HL-X with the plugable pressure pad is TRASH.

For picatinny mounts i can give one advise, put oil or thin fat on the bottom of the mount where it has contact with the rail. There is friction so the screws are tight, loctite is on the screws but the first few rounds of 308 break it loose, because it isnt settled on the most narrow spot. With lubrication it immediately settles on the most narrow spot and with locite it never comes loose. Torque wrenches are useful but without the lubrication mounts still come loose sometimes.

About red dot failures, I have found that within 15 yards or so, anything in that glass is a fatal hit. You won’t strike the X, but with practive you will score within a couple inches of it which is good enough to stop an attacker. In a fight, I would not have the time to detect the red dot failure, troubleshoot the cause, switch to irons, and then take the time to line up the sights. Anything in that glass is a hit.

Grandpas take on pistol red dots. No matter how good you think you are with your irons, when the defecation hits the oscillation some mediocre shooter with basic training on a dot will outshoot you 10/10 times. That's why everybody who depends on their shots to land uses a dot on their handgun now. Now please tell us all the story how .45 ACP is superior to 9mm, grandpa.

@@brianmoore1164 I know the concept of working things is new to you, but we got a lot of stuff straightened out since people like you are no longer needed for anything. I also understand that it is a hard concept to grasp that with dots you still have cowitnessing irons so even if the dot goes down you're at best at even odds with someone using an optic. I know change is scary and it feels bad that you are useless to society now, but you gotta deal with that or we'll ask the staff at the nursing home to increase the dose of whatever you should be on.

Couldn't agree more with the points in this vid. I hate screws with a passion, they're always coming loose. I just bought a shackle made by a defense contractor to hold my keybar (which resides in my pocket on a pocket clip) and said shackle had a 360° D ring on it that was attached via a screw. Sure enough less than a week later with maybe a couple ounces of weight on it under very light use it unscrewed and I watched the screw fall down a storm drain. Luckily my Keybar was still in my pocket or it would have gone down with it. It's a big reason why I prefer fixed iron sights to removable iron sights and or removable optics. As far as accessories including optics are concerned, you need to train, I understand that for many Thunder Ranch is their first proper training they are doing with a setup and honestly good on those guys for training, but anyone who thinks that a bunch of guns in a safe that they never shoot will save them in a situation where they'd need said guns is wrong. I've never really understood the people with tons of guns, you got two hands and you need both of them to shoot your best no matter what gun you're given, and unlike Arma or Tarkov your out of shape ass ain't carrying 4+ longguns in a backpack. Get the guns you want that you'll actually shoot, then train, know said guns like the back of your hand, then consider modifying them if deemed necessary or replacing them if you end up not liking them and or they end up not working for your use case, then train more accordingly. If shit ain't pulling its own weight it's dead weight. And if you're the shit in that sentence, YOU CAN DO BETTER, so get to it!

For SHTF of course get irons or another backup sighting system but for a pdw with a red dot that has a 5-year battery life... I consider them optional.
