In this episode of TFBTV, James Reeves reviews the 7 most overrated guns. It's not his list, it's yours, since you all picked them out yourselves on the TFBTV subreddit @ reddit.com/r/tfbtv
Here are some hints: We've got some old favorites, some really good rifles and pistols that are just overpriced, some Dirty Harry guns, some C&R rifles, and some of James favorite pistols made the list too. :(

I'd remove the 1911. Not only does its rank at #7 on your originally "Top 5" list make it technically an "Honorable Mention" but (unlike the M1A/M14) its modernized variants improve upon the original design with better quality, utility, and aesthetics. It no longer shoots only .45 ACP but also can be chambered in 9mm and just about any other pistol caliber. It's available at any price point from $400 to $4000+ and is made by every major manufacturer--precisely because there's a thriving market for it. The 1911 isn't just a classic firearm. It's also hella fun to shoot and super cool to handle. Like the Glock 19, no gun collection is complete without one. (I'd move the G19 down to #6 and into "Honorable Mention" territory, too. Both of these guns are overrated AND underrated, depending on whom you ask.)

1911 was my first pistol. Put 100 rounds through it the other day. No problems after 15 years. Favorite rifle is my M1A. Sold my 2nd AR to help pay for it. Shoots 1” groups with my hunting loads. 150 grn Barnes TTSX. Works phenomenal on hogs here in Texas. Can often get 3-4 of them before the pack runs off with the quick follow up from the semi auto. Only clean it once a year. Only time it jammed is on a batch of hand loads that I only neck sized. Just wanted to try it. Haven’t done it agin. Just because somebody else likes something doesn’t mean it’s for you. Just because somebody else dislikes something doesn’t mean you shouldn’t try it. Perfection is perception. So buy as many as you can and if you don’t like em, find somebody who does and sell em! Then go buy some more and try those! God bless

Fun Fact: the people behind the movie Dirty Harry specifically wanted the Model 29 for it. The problem being that it was already out of production because of the low sales when they were making the movie. S&W had to put together one from spare parts. But because of the popularity of the movie, sales of the S&W Model 29 skyrocketed. Although it was said a lot of buyers ended up returning theirs...

Good stuff. In 1981 I bought my first 1911, a Series 70 Colt. My Dad told me not to buy that POS and pointed to another gun in the case that was far superior, a Browning Hi Power. Of course, I was young and dumb. Why listen to the advice of my WWII combat vet Dad who stomped across Europe in Patton's 3rd Army? What did he know? Years later, traded that jamming POS for a SW 357. I miss you Dad......

I own an HK USP Elite 9mm and an HK Mark 23. They are both very accurate. Stunningly so! The "match grade" triggers are ho-hum. The USP is huge and the Mark 23 is massive. Oh; and both DO cost too much money, but I continue to like them. Overall, his list was pretty much on the money.
@sordidsentinel

I love HK aesthetics, but despise their pricing. the Mark 23 is ridiculously massive. one of the few handguns i've held and thought, "yeah, this is too big for my hands to feel comfortable manipulating the controls on in a stress situation..." not to mention the $2500 price tag.... gorgeous engineering, though.

Your breaking my heart Fredo! The m14 saved my butt in Afghanistan. Yes it’s horribly heavy, and accuracy on paper was minute of barn door at 100m, but when the bullets were flying and my friends were clearing double feeds in their colt m4s, the old m14 was chuga lugging along and laying down 7.62 hate.
@wigon
@wigon 2 жыл бұрын
It's also so nice to be firing a round that can really reach out and touch someone at ranges commonly found in Afghanistan. I'm not a combat veteran, but I served in the Army Reserves between 93-2001. As a M60 gunner I absolutely adored how easily I was able to hit 600 meter targets and how I could hit out to 800 meters just with iron sights. It's a good feeling to have that kind of range and confidence in your weapon system when you see everything in 5.56mm falling way short. It's that "If I can see it, I can hit it" feeling that definitely builds confidence in a weapon system. That's why I'm not totally hating on the new SPEAR rifles. That being CQB is a whole other matter and is where I prefer 5.56mm firearms. It's all about using the right tools for the right job.

Sounds like you had a moron sergeant like I did... Mine convinced the chief to buy the entire department H&K HK45's for duty handguns and Ruger SR556's (the piston driven ones) for the AR15's... talk about a waste of tax payer money for overpriced and overhyped shit! I showed him an article from Lucky Gunner about steel case vs brass case ammo one day... not because of the topic, but because of the cleaning regimen they used... Basically a drop of oil in the cam pin every 2500 rounds, exterior bolt wipe down every 5000k rounds and a detail cleaning at 10k... through all of that, not one of the AR's had any significant number of stoppages. He was flabbergasted that a DI AR15 would last that long. So dumb.

You're not wrong, but I think it goes deeper than that. There is defective hard-wiring in the brains of the KAC Fanboys. Your hypothesis might explain the first KAC they buy (and defend to the death), but it doesn't explain why they'll pay $150 for an Aimpoint T2 Battery Cap with the KAC logo screen printed on it, or the many other asinine purchases they'll make after they buy their SR-15 (anyone wanna buy a dimpled AR15 Barrel for $2,000? The KAC Fanboys will beat down your door for one). I say this as a KAC SR-15 owner. The first one I bought was defective. Yes, and KAC admitted it on a public forum that it was defective. So much for their reliability, huh?

The main issue I have is that bullet technology has come a very long way. When describing how messed up this caliber or that caliber might be, the discussion of bullet brand needs to be brought up. We’ve all seen how Liberty ammo has a low gr high fps round. Pushing a .45 to 1900 fps. Or a 9mm to 2000+ fps. The results are so different compared to your grandpas bullets. With that said, fuk the .40 and just go 10mm. Just sayin.
@QualityPen
@QualityPen 5 ай бұрын
I discovered a website which tests handgun round ballistics and the range of performance within the same caliber is stunning. There’s 9mm hollow point ammo which will penetrate a few inches and barely expand. There’s 9mm hollow point ammo which can go through someone and expand to twice its normal width at the same time. Yes, brands and pressures matter. My recommendation after looking at that data- 9mm really needs overpressure ammo to perform adequately in self defense situations, but make sure your gun can handle it.

I feel I need to comment on the HK handguns. I was in my early 20s when I bought my first HK USP 45. I traded in my Beretta 92 on it to make it more easily affordable. I really liked the controls and the looks of it. However, putting a lot of rounds through it, I wondered why I put that much scratch into it. I've owned 3 different HK pistols over the years, and I've grown to really like them. To a point. Once the parts start to wear to the point of failure, the replacements are expensive and not very easy to switch out. That said, I still love them, but there are much better options out there for people who aren't really invested in keeping up an HK for hard use

Never seen one consistently shoot under 2 MOA. -Need a ton of specialty tools and know how to work on them. -They made sense 20-30 years ago when you could get them along with 5k rounds of ammo for a Chuck-E-Cheese token, but not now.

The thing about the 1911 that no one ever mentions but locks it for me is that came out in 1911. When it came out, probably more than half the adults of the time had learned to shoot with a muzzle-loader. The vast majority of modern guns were bolt action or revolvers, usually with some design element that is hard to believe ever made sense. And then there is the 1911, that obviously fell out of a time machine. Be honest: we all liked the 1911 as a kid, thought it looked cool and very modern, saw it in the movies, etc. Remember the day you found out WHY it is called a 1911 and it instantly gridlocked you? Well, for me, that is why the 1911 can not ever be over-rated. It IS the rating system.

If you get a cheap or poorly built (Kimber Custom II) 1911, then yes, it is overrated. However, if you get a solid, well built, well machined 1911 (Sig Sauer, Springfield), it is as reliable as the sun coming up in the East and setting in the West. I have several and have 1000s of rounds with zero failures (except for my 2 Kimber Custom IIs). I'll admit, my Glock 17 and 26 are reliable as well, but they don't handle as well as the 1911s. If you are going to polymer framed guns, than My Sig P320 and XD's are just as reliable and more comfortable shooter than my Glocks. I would put my XD or Sig up against a Glock any day. If Glock is Perfection, than XD and Sig are Perfection made better.

I'm pretty sure the entire Glock line deserve a special distinction here, because the pistols only really good once you replace the trigger, the sights, add grip texture, add serrations to slide, add rmr cuts, and replace a couple parts here and there. Oh and you pay more for this basic starter pack of a pistol. In the meantime you can get all the same features on an M&P for a lot less money, can you get pistol backstraps that actually stay on the pistol. But if you want all that Gucci stuff you're more than welcome to go buy a Sig Sauer Legion, it'll probably still cost less than the tuned-up Glock.

@@W9HJBill there are definitely more overrated guns. IMO, the only part on a Glock that really needs to be replaced is the sights, which is the case for most pistols. You can run a stock Glock trigger pretty fast. Short of buying a Canik or certain Walthers all striker fired pistols have similar triggers out of the box. It should say something when the army adopts the P320 due to a much lower bid than Glock, meanwhile the FBI, and DEA - less concerened with budget - use Glocks. SOCOM also adopted the Glock so that secret squirrel types can use it. As far as budget pistols I think Caniks are prett hard to beat.

Unfortunately, those pistols never really caught on. I think it's because people are obsessed with strikers and the triggers on striker guns have improved. One plus is that they use the same mags as the P-10, but it would have been better if the P-07/09/10 just used CZ-75 mags. The versatility of the omega system is really nice, though. Go classic double-single with a decocker, or SAO with a safety and double-action second strike capability. BE WARNED, though, even with tuning, the omega trigger will never be as good as a tuned CZ-75/Shadow2/P-01 trigger. EDIT: Also, people have had issues with the P-07 chambered in .40, so stick with 9mm.

First off my background is 8 years in the U.S. Army Reserve including 3 years as a rifle and crew-served weapons instructor. I maintained an "expert" marksmanship badge. I've owned firearms privately for 30 years. All that being said, I'm super late to the 1911 game, but after buying a budget Rock Island Armory 1911A1 GI model, I'm blown away by it's reliability, it's accuracy, super sweet trigger, it's pointability, and it's overall fun factor. It very quickly became my favorite gun to shoot. For a budget pistol, RIA 1911's are just a fantastic "bang for your buck" pistol. They may be outdated overall, but a well made 1911 is a fantastic training firearm as far as learning to develop a good grip (to insure the grip safety is activated) and to develop muscle memory to flip off the safety if you wish to use a manual safety as well on your striker-fired pistols. It's just a very very solid design that I tend to shoot better than all of my other striker fired and hammer fired pistols. For those on a budget, I really think everyone should own either a RIA 1911 (who've been making them in the Philippines almost as long as Colt) or a Turkish made Girsan 1911. Both are regarded as good budget 1911's. I bought an RIA government model both because it was the cheapest but also because I liked the nostalgia factor. I got super lucky in that mine shoots point of aim, point of impact at 10 yards. However I'd recommend to anyone else to buy one with adjustable sights at least on windage. They are a bit more of a pain to clean, but if you have a sweet one, it's really hard to hate on a good well-made 1911. Those government reports in this video were most likely on the old Colt models. These days with modern manufacturing processes, companies like RIA are making them to much higher quality levels. I've hit only the 400 round marker on my RIA 1911, but so far zero malfunctions and fantastic accuracy with all ammo I've put through it including steel cased ammo and hollow point rounds. So can you get a shitty 1911? Yes. Some will suck, even expensive ones. But if you get a good one with a solid reputation for reliability (like the RIA models) you will be quite happy with it. .45ACP may not be any more effective than modern 9mm ammunition, however .45 ACP has a less snappy recoil impulse that kinda just feels nicer when shooting these massive 230 grain slugs from it. I have small hands and it still just feels super nice to shoot. I short, it's just a very versatile and fun gun to shoot that is a great training firearm with plenty of safety features for new shooters. I think every serious shooter should have at least one decent 1911. It may not be your primary defensive pistol, but I guarantee you that you will always have fun taking it out to the range for some precise target shooting. It's funny because I never associated .45 ACP rounds with target shooting. But now I do as I shoot my basic GI model 1911 almost as accurately as my Ruger MK 3 22/45 target pistol (.22LR). If you get a good 1911 you'll find yourself blowing out the center of your paper targets fairly quickly due to the huge holes those slugs make. So yeah a good 1911 should put a big smile on your face. That's hard to say about most firearms.

At my gun shop, the Rocks and their sister brand Citadel are far more reliable than our $2000 top shelf custom 1911’s. Quality is there and they simply run.

Naw, just a career Soldier who helps sell guns at a shop. Most of our clientele is military or retired military, so I give them the straight story on our weapons. There are enough financial predators out there trying to rip off young Soldiers, so if they are set on a 1911, I always steer them to the inexpensive old reliable Rock Islands. Simply never had to send one in for a repair.

@@pcpolice7937 Hahaha... I wish I was the RIA Sales Manager for the U.S.. My life is a bit sad as I'm the full-time caretaker of an elederly parent. I can't get out much due to their 24 hr care needs so my only chance to relax is spending a couple of hours at the range once every two weeks with some of my favorite guns. I'm just very enthusiastic about the RIA 1911 because it's one of the best shooting pistols I've ever shot. I honestly hadn't expected much from it. But it turned out to be one of my best firearm purchases value-wise. Girsan I hear also makes fantastic budget 1911's (and Baretta M9 clones) out of Turkey.

I love 1911s, I carried one a lot in the Navy, but James's comments were so funny that he almost turned me. I do have a soft spot for the M14. The first time I shot one in 1979, I earned the Navy Expert Rifleman Medal.

I have a 1911 because I've always wanted one. It isn't a hill I'm willing to die on though. I've only put a little over 2K rounds through my Citadel and luckily I've never had a jam. For $450 bucks it was a great deal. I also own a P365 which I love so I'm really glad I didn't see that on this list as well.

I really like your channel and watch almost every video. I have a customized, acuratized, M1A with national match hardware and a customized adjustable stock. I also have a custom built bolt action precision rifle in the same .308. Both firearms shoot sub MOA, coming in at .75 MOA. At a recent outing with my nephew where we were shooting steel at 250M, 350M and 500M, I was able to hit targets of various diminishing sizes faster with the M1A without a miss than the bolt action. If I had to have overwatch, I would choose the M1A still. Opinions are like assholes, they all stink. You now have mine.

1911 is an outdated platform overall....still works, still can get match accuracy, but is a bit outdated. That said, Browning invented an absolute monster WAY ahead of its time, owning market for a century. Every auto now is a derivative.

People just get salty that a 100 yr old gun can still out perform their stupid plastic "modern" guns. I'll gladly take my 1911 over any other pistol I own. The only downfall is small mags. 10k rounds though mine and only a handful of malfunctions I contribute to my shite reloads I crank out on the progressive as fast as it turns.
@51Dss
@51Dss Жыл бұрын
@@YourDadsBoyfriend Yeah I love my 1911s too. As for small mags - they are thinner than double stack mags and easier to carry 5 or 6 at a time. I know its supposed to be "better" to carry as much ammo as you can but honestly A round in the pipe, one mag in the gun and one in a carrier or elsewhere on my person is more than enough for me. I always figure if I'm in a situation where 18 or 19 rounds isn't enough I'm already fk-d going in and more mags won't help much if at all. Not recommending anyone else do it that way - its just my way and I've been ok with it for many years. Thankfully I have not been in a firefight yet and I hope I never will.

@@YourDadsBoyfriend It is a tight weapon, it has malfunctions because it has little variability, but that's what makes it so accurate. It was tested by the military to be outdated and malfunction 4 times as much as modern pistols, as you saw in the video. I love the 1911 also, especially the compact ones that are modernized. It's still obsolete and that goes for the Glock 19 also size wise for CCW, you think we can't see its imprint when you carry it, we can, I saw you in the food court 100 yards away with it lol. You are wearing a full-size polo and jeans in the summer to conceal that thing.

Look man, I’ve got an H&K USP expert and I love the thing! It’s hugely impractical, has a monstrous grip, has no Pic rail for a light, it pinches the web of my hand every time I put a mag in it, came with a blacked-out front sight…the pros? Many. Trigger is pretty awesome, softest recoil impulse in a 9mm I’ve ever experienced, 5.2” barrel, INSANELY accurate, and 100% bomb-proof! They just have a certain, something.

I'm with you. I had a 40 full size Smith & Wesson and went to a 9 after years of damage to my body in the military and the workforce. I was a naysayer of 9 mm for a long time until I started shooting more with it. Much more controllable and really didn't make a difference on what I was hitting so I'm going to stick with the nine. I wouldn't let keyboard surfers ruin that experience it just means that they don't have a lot of experience themselves.
