Let's discuss the causes and consequences of folate deficiency. Some of the early symptoms include a swollen and magenta-colored tongue, cracks in the corners of the mouth, mouth ulcers, forgetfulness, diarrhea, numbness or tingling in the hands and feet, poor memory, confusion, insomnia, and depression.
Folate plays a role in the production of neurotransmitters like serotonin and dopamine, so deficiency can contribute to depression. Folate deficiency can also lead to anemia, fatigue, headaches, muscle weakness, heart palpitations, weight loss, loss of appetite, dizziness, and shortness of breath.
There are several factors that can contribute to folate deficiency, such as certain medications, diseases like celiac disease and inflammatory bowel disease, and genetic factors like the MTHFR mutation. Folate deficiency can have a wide range of negative effects on the body and is associated with various chronic diseases.

🎯 Key Takeaways for quick navigation: 00:13 *📌 Swollen, magenta-colored tongue, angular stomatitis, mouth ulcers, and early onset depression can indicate folate deficiency, often co-occurring with other B vitamin deficiencies.* 01:23 *🧠 Folate deficiency can lead to symptoms like brain fog, forgetfulness, diarrhea, numbness/tingling in hands and feet, poor memory, confusion, insomnia, and late-stage confusion or dementia.* 03:16 *💡 Folate is essential for producing neurotransmitters like serotonin, dopamine, epinephrine, and norepinephrine, impacting mood regulation and potentially contributing to depression.* 04:41 *🧪 Folate plays a crucial role in serotonin and dopamine production, affecting mood and overall well-being; folate deficiency can lead to decreased production of these neurotransmitters.* 08:56 *🩺 Folate deficiency can cause neurotoxicity and vascular damage due to elevated homocysteine levels, potentially leading to nerve and brain tissue damage, emphasizing the importance of folate in neurological health.* 09:21 *🧬 Individuals with severe MTHFR mutations are at greater risk for folate deficiency, necessitating caution with synthetic folic acid intake and consideration of methylated folate supplementation.* 12:40 *🤒 Diseases like celiac disease, inflammatory bowel disease, and gastritis can contribute to folate deficiency, highlighting the importance of addressing underlying health conditions.* 15:03 *💉 Folate deficiency can lead to anemia, fatigue, headaches, muscle weakness, heart palpitations, weight loss, loss of appetite, dizziness, and shortness of breath, emphasizing its role in red blood cell production and overall health.* 16:13 *🩸 Folate deficiency can lead to macrocytic anemia or megaloblastic anemia, characterized by immature, large red blood cells due to impaired maturation caused by insufficient folate levels.* 19:05 *⚖️ Folate and vitamin B12 should be taken together as they work synergistically; supplementing with high doses of folate alone can mask vitamin B12 deficiency, emphasizing the importance of balanced supplementation and monitoring.* Made with HARPA AI

I have all of those symptoms. I recently had my homocysteine checked and it was over 15. No doctor ever recommended me having that checked. I did it myself after listening to Dr Osborne. Then I went back on my records and found that my homocysteine was high in 2018 at 13. So many years to damage my body. Recently diagnosed with PVD which probably was contributed to by the high homocysteine. Also sllowly trying to figure out why my NT pro BNP was over 1200. So maybe I'm getting closer to figuring out because the doctors are clueless. 🤬

Thank you .. I was put on 1 mg folic acid daily after being on methotrexate for a while to counteract a side affect - mouth sores. I recently learned the difference between folic acid & folate, so have switched. Great information .. thank you.

How often do levels of FOLATE change? Let's say I have mine checked and get my level as 4, (example)...... does that level fluctuate each day? Each week, Each month? Just not sure how to "maintain" a good level in my body, or how critical my eating must be to maintain a good level. Thanks

Hi doc Peter, love ur work! :) I am 46 year old female. I dont drink, smoke, mostly eat well and go gym most days was feeling very tired last two months. went doctors and they told me i am FOLATE DEFFICIENT at 3.6 ug/L . My B12 is fine i think at 584 ng/L. Doctor prescribed me FOLIC ACID 5MG per day for 2 months. but i dont want to take SYNTHETIC FOLIC ACID. so i ordered METHYLFOLATE and took 1mg capsule yesterday! I think my body tolerated it ok? but I had a little diarrhea this morning!!! Not sure if I should disccontinue the methylfolate 1mg per day or go to a lower dose? Or take a good B-Complex with say 500-800-- mcg FOLATE, instead to address the LOW FOLATE? as I heard a B-complex is more gentle on stomach and all goes well together?! My B12 is fine according to my blood test, 584 ng/L. do I need to take B12 too with the METHYLFOLATE too? 🙏🙏

@@geauxp yes, if its a small amount he's OK, but in a green smoothie or juice....he gets aggressive. I learned from the Walsh institute that he has undermethylation issues. Still trying to find out more but look up videos from Dr Mensah. He has a wealth of knowledge about this and many other topics for mental and emotional stress.
