If you have a plan to buy a CLK, C-Class, CL-Class or an E-class, these tips will help you to find the issues quickly and if you already have one of these cars it will definitely help you find out earlier, avoid, diagnose and prepare to fix. Please let me know the other issues that I have missed. thank you as usual for watching

@trevorhanlon-eb4vc If this has the 2006-2008 M272 Engine you must check the VIN number to see if the car is In the "balance shaft sprocket" affected with low quality causing premature wear and failure of the engine. This usually happens after 100k km. And the engine needs to be removed.

Great video. I own a pristine now 18 yr old 2005 CLK 320 with under 75k miles, and I had all that you mentioned replaced and or repaired to include the valve cover gasket, crank shaft sensor, purge valve, breather line, fuel system attended to, motor and transmission mounts, cabin & engine filters along with 3k interval oil changes. These classic coupes with the M112 or M113 is a joy to own and drive and I still get compliments wherevever I go. Best thing to have on your side when you own a Mercedes, is to avoid stealerships for repairs or maintenance and locate a good Indie privately owned Mercedes shop that have certified Mercedes master mechanics.

Glad to see you pointed out the Orings on connector at transmission for electrical connection. I replace it every 50K miles or so when I service the transmission. You didn't mention the leaky cam magnets that can wick into the engine harness though. Mercedes used to update by adding wiring pigtails that went between the magnets and the engine harness. Was a free thing at the dealer, but no idea if it still is. It's easy to do yourself if need be, and I'm sure they can be purchased for very little.

Thank you mate for great comment, some of these issues are more visible by a simple inspection as you mentioned but for example transmission connector seal leak might be over sighted and cause the TCU to fail.

Concerning the headlight lenses becoming opaque, what i did was purchase a buffing kit for the lenses, which is a two part process with 2 different grits of sandpaper and chemical compound. I found that process, which only rook me about 30 minutes, completely cleared the lenses up. However, if they are old and worn with UV damage, then the opqueness will return after some time, but you can repeat this process as much as you wish. Theres a couple oil leak issues with the clk w209 and around that year, which are very easy to resolve. 1) cam plugs or "expansion" plugs located on the back of each cam. They are accessible by hand and there are 3 plugs total. 1 on passenger side and 2 on driver side (left hand drive). They are about $20 USD for the package of 3 and can be changed out relatively easily. 2) cam shaft adjuster magnets and sensors. The whole kit can be purchased for between $100-150 USD (in my experience), which includes all magnets and sensors. This is a common oil leak area that can be inspected/observed simply by looking and no disassembly required to diagnose. However, these require some effort in replacing and you may want to get your mechnic to change, but if you are mechnically inclined it is just a matter of time and effort. 3) crankcase breather housing may develop leak over time. Again, this part is quite cheap

Love my CLK280. Owned for near six years. Throws engine code alerts now and then. Car only has 137,500 Ks on it. Cam chain stretch and wear on balancer shaft sprockets are an issue with both CLK V6 and V8 motors. An expensive repair but then the engine will run for another 160 thousand Ks without a timing issue. Yet to have mine done but will soon before I have major issue. Plus get transmission serviced, meaning oil,filter, plastic level tube and trans sump bolts (one use only) around 125,000 Ks or less if your car is mainly used for urban driving. Those transmissions are very strong but expensive to repair/ replace. Oil is cheap in comparison to Mercedes parts. Penrite make a special transmission oil for the 7 speed transmission. Did my transmission service at home around 120,000 Ks and it has run smoothly and faultlessly ever since.

accurate video. i just had my valve cover gaskets replaced as they were leaking. also my headlights got pretty foggy but i fixed them with a turtle wax headlight restoration kit. my glove box latch is completely broken, the previous owner sealed it shut with a screw. my driver side headrest stopped working in the up position, i somehow managed to move it down then just unplugged the motor since the seat cant go forward to let people in when its all the way up. my sunroof also isnt working at all, it was like that since i bought it. but other than those issues its a great reliable car. i currently have 170000kms on it

I bought a 2004 clk 240 in pristine condition in February then took to Mercedes for a full service including gearbox oil, coolant, brake fluid, gaskets, brakes then a month later thick white smoke started coming out during drives. Then engine light came which read misfiring on cylinders 2 and 3. Garage cleared the codes then told me to return if light came back on which it didn’t for a month or so then bang! Whist driving it few weeks ago thick white smoke followed by knocking noise. Separate independent Mercedes garage now say it needs a new engine! They say head gasket blew but strangely I checked coolant level daily and saw no drop in level. Car’s only on 74000 miles.
@BenzAddiction
@BenzAddiction 4 ай бұрын
Very rare on M112 to blow head gasket. This engine easily lasts 200 miles. Test compression on 6 cylinders see if the numbers are within 10 percent of each other. Read the spark plug colours. Might be EGR, might be evaporative system... need more investigations. Might be one of the injectors, might be a coil pack or electric issue.

Hello, 2009 should be a 7 speed. I suggest you to diagnose the car using a proper OBD2 Scanner, possibly the star. These transmissions rarely fail mechanically, it is usually the gear shifter or the conductor plate that goes bad and that would be maximum less than $1000 of cost.

Mine had the weirdest problem. First winter i drove it, i hadn't driven it for like a week and all drives before that were very short (like 4km). So i asked my friend to come jumpstart it, started just fine. The battery died again a while later though and i had to ask my old boss to start it this time. Basically, after that first jumpstart it would seem to consume battery when i parked it, so much that after a weekend the battery would be dead. Replaced the battery too and didn't fix it. But the weird part is that the problem completely went away... Now i can park it for even 2 weeks and it starts no problem.
@TopiasSalakka
@TopiasSalakka 2 ай бұрын
Now the only annoying problem i have is that the blend door for windshield on driver side is broken, for some reason it's open when i start the car but then closes and starts clicking. Really sucks in the wet and cold, windows fog up badly until the car warms up. Also either the EIS or key glitches rarely, sometimes i can't lock or unlock the doors from the fob, and sometimes the key doesn't work in the ignition switch. Temporary workaround for the latter issue is to insert the key without a battery, works every time.

I had a wery weird problem. My w209 started to go dead, not starting, like the battery i dead. I asked people few times to give me a start from their bateries, because I thought the battery died because of heating or smth. But I'd driven some more, put the engine down for a moment, and it wouldn't start again. Came back later and it started just fine. Bought a new battery, no change. And there was no source of this sudden death. A neighbour mechanic plugged it in, no errors, turned off. Told me he doesn't know. But then it didn't want to start again, he plugged it in, and there was a failiure of the rwd driveshaft sensor failure as you say. They said it was minor, but if it went dead all the way, my engine, gearbox or even the entire rear axis could've get fallen apart during a fast drive (it means every time I drive after 6 seconds from the kickdown) it could make the car fucking shredd to pieces and probably get my and my wife killed. I have a very unpolished 2003 w209, one of the first made when w208 were still being sold, and it has a lot of little problems, that lead to total failure later. Some time ago I started losing all my oil faster than I coul;ve reach the next gas station to put the oil. For about6 years before the oil consumption was just crazy, some a 300ml of 5-40 (i used5-w40 instead of 5-w30 because it was thicker and it disappeared slower). It was found out, that the whole engine keeps the pressure too high, and the oil is being forcefully squeezed through all the tiniest nano-leaks all over the cylinders and other parts). They've put a "breathing" seal on the oil circulation seal, and it fixed the problem. But before that the engine ran out of oil and literally died, like someone shot a .50 raufuss through it. Now there's a frankenstein w208 engine with the surviving parts from the old one. It has 400 000km driven so you know what they say; "all toasters toast toasts". Now after gearbox oil change, when I release throttle after fast acceleration 50-100, and when I do the gearbox goes to neutral, and I can press throttle as much as I want, rpm goes up but the car is slowing down. However after it slows down to 40kmph it goes back to gear. But on a highway it goes 240kmph all the time for hours and there’s not a single problem then. Just gotta go fast.

Interesting story. So what is the problem? 400k km is probably enough to overhaul both engine and transmission.

@@BenzAddiction I guess. Today I was speeding to get my wife to hospital and a car stopped in front of a guy with a bicycle walking across the street, I didn't manage to break fast enough because we had a deal on gas and it was full and heavy. I couldn't manage to get whats going on, the family was very agressive and called the cops because I lost my ID some time ID, along with all documents. They punished me heaviest fine possible, half of the car was cracked, my wife got a panick attack, I couldn't contact her, she was hiding in the gas station crying, when I'd been trying to call her for the x'th time I drive on the side and ripped a tire to shredds. Car fell on my hand because f the heat and the lifting device made a hole in the road, but my mechanix mpact gloves saved me. My fiancee was panicking because I drank her cofee which was heavly itished and I shoul'd be drunk, but the test said 0,000 000%. And the steering assistance got f-d. And something is leaking from the place somewhere under te seats. I feel so sad. I've been driving this car for 6 years without any misadventures, and after a near death experience after a bad surgery as they ripped my trachea and lungs during appendectomy because my intestine moved under the oekvic bone. Now every day of my life is a tragedy.

Basically any V6 of this era is more reliable than the 4 cylinder, smoother too. So 280 is a V6 and a well looked after CLK280 should be a reliable car too.

There is a way to reset your headrest by push forward all the way and wait 5 sec and go back to rear all the way wait 5 sec. Then your seat should work. You need to key in at position 2, do not start the engine. After you set your desire seat position and press the memory button to save it in case if it doesn’t work in the future, you can simply press a memory button .

@godsimage1793 unfortunately I have not much experience working on or reviewing the W212. But I definitely can say that any 6 cylinder mercedes would be much more reliable than the 4 cylinder counterpart. The 2006 CLK500 if it's not a 5.5L engine should be fine and reliable. Buying a low milage car with proven servicing is recommended.
