One addition: If your camera has a built-in exposure meter, be sure to set your film speed (ISO rating) on your camera each time you load a new roll of film.

Yes, and some cameras can read the DX coding on the film canister. However, what caught me out was that Fomapan 400 does not have DX markings. My little Olympus mju: does not have a means to set the ISO manually so I had to get my film processor to fix it.

Share the know-how. Thanks. All I can add is that with film I always attach the loose end first and then turn the take-up spool to be sure it is attached. Then I just pull the canister end and drop in into where it belongs, close the back and away I go. Another great video.

My no.1 tip for any film camera noob who just bought their first film camera - Before you load it with film take it to your local camera store and ask them to check it over. They'll happily check the shutter fires, check the light seals and film advance mechanism works, they'll even load a new film for you and show you how to use your camera. It's good to support your local camera shop, they may give you tips on the best film for your needs and any local labs to get it developed. I recently took my newly aquired £10 Yashica T2 that I bought untested, it takes one of those odd 6v cells, to my local camera shop. They fully tested it before they sold me a new battery, they even put an old film through it to make sure it was loading and spooling film fine. One very happy customer!

Another suggestion:when using old film cameras that require batteries, know the way the camera works in terms of battery usage. Does it turn off automatically when not in use? Does it drain the battery completely if you don’t turn it off? That sort of thing.

Good advice. One thing about buying an old camera and then going out to shoot is that the old shutter curtain may have pin point holes in it and that first role is rubbish because of that. I have an old Barnack 1931 1C which I have not used due to this fear and I might just send it off for a service repair and ask for a new shutter curtain.

Well said about the film cameras not mattering as long as they focus and wind the film ok and don't have any light leaks, and the film remains flat on the rails, they are just fine. The best ones are easier for the photographer to use but have little to do with the quality of the image. It is all about the lenses and how good they are. Great lenses make great pictures on even the cheapest camera as long as what I said at first is true.

How do you have your film scanned? I use a Nikon 9000 but have a lot of dust problems with silver B&W film where the ICE feature can not be used. Further, there just seems to be a lot of "mottling" and uneven border density with the medium format scans. These are exacerbated if one processes to add "guts" to the image.

for tip 6 also remember the leica's !, if you add a motor drive you need to hit the rewind twice!, once to "detension" the motor winder, next to engauge the rewind crank! ( the force of the motor can cause the same thing!, so turn it off, and reset the camera to stop the motor from ripping the film). Also be aware with any slr, some motor winders do go THROUGH the film cavity, so DON'T remove the winder until the roll is done!

If a person is not sure about the film in the camera they can go into a room with NO light OR use a jacket to COMPLETELY cover the camera, and check what is in the camera ,, better than opening in the light,,, In the past we had a bag that we could put our camera (or film loaders) into then put our arms into the provided holes..

Matt, one other reason for mistake 1 is that this is the Correct way for Auto loading point and shoots!, NOT a manual 135 slr or rangefinder, or a MF 120 roll; these ALL have to be grabbed by the spool, and inserted into the "crocks jaws" manually; also for 120 users, in hasselblads, rolliflex, some film magasines need you to 'cock' the counter, by a lever, turning the winder backwards (Hasselblad 12-on backs), or like the rollieflex 2000s/3000 the switch for multi-exposure, or BOTH power switches have not been set correctly.

Done the film advance thing myself before. Advance lever suddenly "jammed" and i couldnt figure out why. I even went to the trouble of winding the film back, taking the cannister out, reloading it, then shooting at min aperture and max speed with the lens cap on to get back to the frame I was last on.... same again!!!.... then it dawned on me... the roll of Delta 400 in my camera was a 24, not a 36. What a dumb ass 😂😂😂😂

Ha...No. 2: Stress marks..I do remember.....it must have been somewhere in 1987. The film got stuck in my favorite camera: a beautiful Mamiya nc1000s...(still in my possession) turned so hard on the rewind crank that I ruined the little holes in the film for the sprocket wheel...result; a completely destroyed film... Luckily the camera survived my rookie behaviour. Memories, memories...memories.. My conclusion: Digital has it advantages...if I could only love it as much as film .......

one mistake I made, with a Hasselblad 500c/m was I put 400 ASA film through it, and didn't have a lens hood, so Please use one!, Always, and if you have EV 15 or 17 like I did (when I digitally metered, and set that on my lens), USE 160 or 100 asa film, you will get horendous flare!!- not a light leak, but glare!! when using 400, it was an expired fuji pro 400 H, not available any more, but the asa correlation should still hold water.
