Hi Matt.M262 and M240 are exactly the same camera,with the same censor and the same processor.The main differences are that 262 doesn’t have video (so also doesn’t have live view and evf) and that 262 is made with aluminium and 240 is made with brass (that’s why 262 is lighter).MP 240 has also better buffer and sapphire glass.MP is a marketing think,but not only a marketing think.MP at general has a slightly better build quality.Overall MP 240 is a better camera because:1)Has better build quality 2)You can use MP 240 exactly as the M262 if you don’t add EVF,you don’t use video and you close the live view,but sometimes it is good to have the EVF option (with 90mm wide open or with 16mm and 21mm),it is good to have live view option (to check the exposure and the white balance before shoot).3)Has better buffer 4)Has sapphire glass 4)Has exactly the same battery (if you don’t use live view and evf last about the same). 5) I don’t know why and how but M240 color are better in my opinion (there is no logical explanation about this).

Thanks, yes correct, I covered these points in the recent video series and blog post. I can’t answer the colours comment! I’ll have to compare my 262 to 240!

As usual his conclusion is totally ridiculous. The advantages he claims are almost all disadvantages. Lack of evf and lack of frame selector are crazy.

I had an M262 a few years ago and it was great! I only sold it because we needed to have video as well, so bought a Sony A7iii, which is not as enjoyable to use for photography, but it does everything. Recently I bought a new Leica M10R and after less than 100 shots it malfunctioned, so I sent it back to leica under warranty for repair (a new main board or something). It took about 4 months. Now it’s perfect! Love the channel Matt 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼

I bought an M262 last Autumn and it's been everything I wanted out of the M240, which I had previously owned, with all of the things that annoyed me remedied - weight, the gloss paint and that cold toned screen. The M262 also comes with the benefit of the quiet film like shutter. I've been so happy with the output.

Thank you Matt, this is excellent. I have the M9 (early adopter) then the M10 a decade later. I sold the 10 when I thirsted after the H-blad X2D. So glad I kept the M9 for its colors and great B&W conversion. Leica did fix the sensor for free. Because of your videos on Voigtlanders I picked up a Bessa-T "101 kit" and separately, a 28 Color Skopar. I love them. When I go out, often it's the M9 and the Bessa with 100 B&W film. Looking forward to the book.

Thanks Charles and great stuff. I love my little Skopar.. so much I just bought the modern version with tab in M mount. It's super light and will be nice on my M262 and I can use the LTM one on film.

Sometimes the best way is backwards 😉. I also went back to the M9 Monochrom when I felt that the more modern Ms are extremely powerful and versatile, but I need to work less on the files that the first Monochrom delivers compared to its later siblings. So I am happy that I never sold it and now got the chance to re-discover an old love 🙂!

Matt, I was almost thinking you’d really surprise us and choose a monochrom. Seems to have everything you’d want; durable black chrome, no red dot and clean design, you shoot with B&W in mind, and the general file quality [in any of the model versions] is excellent. You’ve got your SL for color and shooting a monochrom comes as close as you can to the film experience in digital, with the advantage of it working so well with vintage lenses.

Thanks! That would be the obvious choice but my problem is I prefer my B&W files from RGB sensors (once preset added)

I went down this rabbit hole as well, and ended up getting the MP240 in black paint instead of the 262. Felt like when I was looking, I was paying for less features with the 262 at the time they were more expensive than the MP240. the main draw was it was my first Leica camera, and I really wanted the black paint model as it was a gift of my choosing for graduation and knew I would never sell it, having the braising could show the wear throughout the years I had it.... looking back, was that stupid? lol maybe but I like the brassing enough to not regret it ha. Enjoy your new to you camera.

Love the simplicity as you mentioned. In fact, that was a big reason I got it. No video, no bells and whistles. That said, I am still having hard time with top-down or low angle shots. Often missing shots due to framing which is why I"m thinking of selling my M262 (for $) to fund a Q3 with the tilt screen as my new do it all companion. Matt, you inspired me to immediately visit MPB to buy the Olympus optical viewfinder for my M240 - they had one left! Super interesting to hear about your brilliant thoughts behind the 262 purchase. To me the M240 was a 'cheap' way in to the M series and it took me another year to decide why Summilux 50 mm was the right choice for me and the camera. Still the learning curve is steep, collecting bits and bobs daily is was what gets me going. But I must admit that being the 'getting low' guy, the Olympus optical viewfinder will open up my perspective even more. Thx mate

Love the shutter sound, great camera. Definitely something to be said about the colours too, very Leica. Every Leica body is different enough that I kind of want one of each. I miss my M9, it just felt like a proper simple camera that got out of the way and made everything about the photo. I can imagine the M262 is similar to that, the M10/M11 feel like they're sliding slightly further away. The M10 series I think might be the best M, personally I reckon an M10-R BP would be my ideal only M and a decent balance between modern do everything and Leica simplicity with a decent shutter. :P

@BrunoChalifour2 ай бұрын
Hello Mike. Congratulations on your new toy/tool. Looks in pristine condition. Choosing an M262 over an M10 or 10P would definitely not be my first choice for the very reasons why I was reconciled with Leica and its digital cameras with the advent of the M10: same size as my M6 (done with the bulk of the M240), bigger buffer and faster processor (not having to wait when shooting several frames in a row and camera not freezing from time to time), and definitely better ISO sensitivity, getting closer to the competition and giving more flexibility. Now the only reason for me for an M240/262 would be the unique color rendition/sensor: softer, more “Leica” in a way than any other sensor, so… I do not understand having such a unique camera/sensor and modifying its color profile for more “pop”?!? Can you explain? Anyway best wishes for a summer of photographs!
@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom2 ай бұрын
Thanks Bruno! Yes the earlier sensors are more Leica for sure. The colours. Yes the M10 is better for most people. I’ll use my presets to add more pop to the files like I do for all Leicas.

I still love my 262 despite all its flaws - colour-banding over ISO1600, no live-view for ultrawide and tele or to check for parallax when I need to precisely line things up... Sometimes I do wish I have all the modern features but that's also the fun of it.

That is a lot to give up to avoid brassing. I am supprised you don't rate the EVF higher since you often suggest using 90 and 135mm lenses. I am happy focusing a 90mm f/2.8 on my M7, but I haven't tried anything faster or longer, I suspect that the lack of an EVF (AND live view) would really slow down focusing with lenses with a shallow DOF. It turns out you address basically all of these points later on in the video, haha. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this. I probably would have kept the M240 instead, but I don't mind silver cameras.
@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom2 ай бұрын
Thanks Josh, the M240 LV is quite laggy so can be frustrating for me. Used to shoot the fastest glass on my M9 all day without issue so I need to train my Jedi skills once more :). ..that said the truth is I have the SL for all the quirky and fast lenses if needed. I'll likely cover that when I get chance.

Matt, as the viewer, it is my right to make the important points of your video my own rather than taking those of the creator😂! So my two take aways are: simplicity and “lack of features.” I’m 68. I started intentionally exploring photography as a freshman in high school at age 14. Long time photographer here. I did film from 1970 thru 2005, when I switched to digital for employment reasons. In the past year, I have pivoted back to film. My two primary cameras are my Polaroid I-2 and my Mamiya 6 MF. I also have a Toyo 4x5 field camera and an Olympus OM 1N. I do have a Canon 5DS R that I use for an on-going very specialized digital photo project I’ve been shooting since 2007. So digital is still an essential part of the mix. Why the pivot to film? Simplicity: There are fewer choices I have to make (or can make) when using film. I’ve found that to be a huge advantage when I’m out shooting. Less baggage to carry around, mentally speaking! The Canon is stuffed to the rafters with options and choices and menus and all manner of doo-hickies, geegaws, sliders, buttons, clickers… I use one very manual-based selection of controls (though at 68 I have conceded to auto focus). There are a couple of specialty items I use, but rarely (and I have to carry the camera manual around to remember how to select them!). The rest I NEVER use. Paid for them, haul them around, deal with all the clutter they create… but do not use them! For my project I need the resolution the camera affords as I make prints up to 8’ x 10’ so I deal with it. That “lack of features” my film cameras give me is actually FREEING, liberating, and such a joy. True, I do make fewer exposures shooting film than digital. My mega-GB cards will store far more images than a like number of rolls/sheets of film I’m willing to carry to equal it! But I’m ok with that. My success: failure rate is better with film than digital because I work differently. And I’m really good with that. And I have to wait to see my results. No chimping, no pixel peeping, no histogram gazing… Just photographing. Which is what I enjoy! And why I do it in the first place. (Did not get to finish, hence the Edit 😅) So. Simplicity and “lack of features” are my two main take aways, for ME, in your excellent video. Cheers and happy shooting, Matt!

Hi Matt✌ Congratulations on your new old 262.👍 I'm sure it's a good choice for you and you'll be able to do your work properly and feel comfortable with it. I can understand that certain aspects also play a major role, including price and other things.👌 I'm no different, some slimmed-down stuff that you don't really need. Focus and various other unnecessary applications that overload the system like 60MP or something that you don't really need. .is not relevant for me either. At least the viewfinder is essential for me because I don't really get on with the display that the M 240 has, for example. Maybe to briefly check the picture I have just taken, normally I don't use it either because the surprise effect is more appealing to me 😉. Lg Anderl

Thanks Matt. Some love for the 262, which sometimes feels like the forgotten Digital M. I've had mine for 8 years. I wanted a no-frills M that would be as close as possible to a film M. Think the 262 does the job. The one thing I find is that the exposure on Auto is pretty harsh. The smallest amount of bright light, it will expose for, leaving the JPEGs very dark. If you or anyone else has an advice on how to nail JPEGs on the 262, I'd be very grateful. Thanks for all the videos. Regards Indra Bhose

OK, it's outdated and irrelevant for photographers, but the Leica M262 does not support video recording compared to the M240. No one needs it with a rangefinder camera, and this function was removed from the M10. I heard once that the function was sacrificed because of the M10's size limitations. In other words, Leica are for masochists, people willing to pay 2 or 3 times more for a camera which has basically nothing to offer but its archaism 😁. When you think about it, the whole "Leica experience" (at leasth the M experience) is in fact, just constraints. I personnally understand that appeal, but that's the whole marketing crap which really makes me think Leica is now just like Rolex. They are selling the same model over and over, with so little innovations they have to release one with black logo, one without logo, with text on the top..Just like Submariner's fans are doing. But at least Rolex are reliables. Leicas are not (your experience with your M10 does tell something).

Thanks and yes it's true, Leica see the gap in the market to offer less and charge more for the novelty. The one thing Leica does that no other brand has yet to manage is to make cameras that you just want to pick up and use . Nothing else comes close. Crazy the development looking backwards. 80 years ago Leica was worldwide the leading camera, almost all photojounalist worked with Leice. Leica was small, flexible, fast - you could catch the right moment. In the new "Life magazine" founded 1936 were mostly pics taken with a Leica. 30 years later, Leica lost the technical leadership to japanese companies, like Pentax, Olympus, Canon and Nikon. Development to AF missed completly. Nowadays Leica is a luxury brand, close to a LV handbag. Professional photographers do not think of Leica, they take Sony and Canon, or Nikon. Very sad that some wrong management decisions changed the leading technical tool to an expensive toy.
@BrunoChalifour2 ай бұрын
I (seriously) doubt that most photographs in the new 1936 Life magazine were taken with Leicas. First there were also Contaxes and Rolleiflexes but most importantly, especially in the US photojournalists worked with 4”x5” (Graflexes) starting with the photograph of Hoover dam on the cover of the very first issue (by MBW). Where did you get your information? Now lots of photojournalists and even wedding photographers (not the majority, agreed, but check Magnum photographers for instance) work with M or SL cameras, it is not just a luxury item and in constant price they are not that much more expensive. Their cost, due to the way they are made, on a global market, has increased, point taken, but ut is more the difference in price with its competitors that have mostly exported their production to Asian countries (outside Japan).

Much cheaper but high quality equipment from Nikon, Canon, Sony... provide exactly that, without the huge expense.
